Recorded in Total Stasis ‘hood of Vancouver, BC, Canada in 2018 by Alex Baris, his self-titled debut appears to be made up of electronic micro-organisms that to play a environmental ambient and micro-jazz with your domestic setting and browser, like a friendly virus or poltergeist that short-circuits the various strands of lower case reality to unravel and reveal some gentle lysergic chaos underneath that connects it all.

Think Irdial for the algorithmic age or sounds from the same rhizome as Wanda Group or Spencer Clark.

“On his debut solo album the Russian pianist Alexey Pudinov (*1988) plays a very diverse program, which can only escape the impression of a hodgepodge if the interpretations are continuously exciting. In the interpretation of the second Brahms sonata Pudinov shows immediately the outstanding level of his performing. His highly musical and very spontaneous performance is never dominated by sound masses, but remains clear and transparent even in massive passages, even somehow light and flexible. Colors, rubato and an often astounding dynamic characterize this Second Sonata. The dynamic intemperance is not a challenge for Pudinov (in this he reminds me of Ugorski), but a terrain where he feels really comfortable, where he can show how pianistic this sonata is, masculine and yet also highly sensitive. The change to Chopin and his Fourth Ballade seems natural and not forced. Pudinov’s fine gradations, his suggestive rubato and his reflective playing help him telling the story that Chopin wrote down musically. The Andante and the Adagio of Rachmaninov Moments Musicaux Op. 16 are very introverted. But even in the Presto effects and virtuosic magic are avoided; in contrast, an overall transparency is emphasized. Pudinov plays each of the three pieces very profoundly and narratively, making each Moment Musical a little story. A very good interpretation of Fazil Say’s Gershwin Variations leads to Impressions on Rothko by composer Dennis Tjiock, born in 1994. This piece was inspired by Mark Rothko, an American Abstract Expressionist painter and pioneer of color field painting. The three minimalist movements are played by Pudinov with great feeling and expression, making them lastingly effective. Pudinov ends his program more than impressively with Bach’s Prelude BWV 855A in Siloti’s transcription. He emphasizes the bass line with astonishing expressive power, underlining the contrast with the ornamented melodic line, which thus becomes all the more expressive. Emil Gilels concluded his legendary Seattle Recital (DG) with this piece. The comparison shows that Pudinov is very superior to his compatriot in this work. Together with the rest of the expressions from this wonderful piano disc, this interpretation makes me say that 32-year-old Alexey Pudinov is one of the most interesting young pianists I have heard in recent years.” (Remy Franck, pizzicato.lu)

At first glance, there seems to be a disparity between Ludwig van Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas and only one pure piano sonata by Franz Liszt. But just as Hans von Bulow called the Beethoven sonatas the “New Testament of Pianists,” the B-minor piano sonata is one of the most important of Franz Liszt’s compositions in terms of its form, technical demands and content. The connection between these composers is not even too far-fetched, since the eleven year-old Franz Liszt studied in Vienna with Beethoven’s student Carl Czerny. Not only did Franz Liszt later champion the prevalence of the works of Ludwig van Beethoven, he also supported the construction of the Beethoven monument in Bonn. Alexei Melnikov began to show talent in piano and composition when he was just a young child. This is his debut album.

Alexei Lubimov chose to play these works by CPE Bach on a tangent piano, a very rare keyboard instrument with an unusual sound. From the middle of the eighteenth century the tangent piano became popular because it could offer more a expressive and intense sound than the harpsichord, and thereby could respond to the changes in the Zeitgeist. It is no accident that all three of the great Viennese composers – Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven – named the ‘Hamburg Bach’ (Carl Philip Emanuel Bach), as their model. As he grew into maturity, CPE’s interest in keyboard music increasingly came to hone in on three genres: the fantasy, the rondo and the sonata. The present album is devoted to all three, plus a few lesser pieces to which the composer gave the title solfeggi. Six of the major pieces proposed by Alexei Lubimov are taken from the great collections known as “für Kenner und Liebhaber”, for connoisseurs and amateurs written between 1779 and 1787. The smaller pieces are taken from other printed collections Keyboard pieces of various kinds and Musical miscellany, published 1765. The listener may thus compare styles of works written at the very end of the Baroque period, and others composed during a time when Haydn and Mozart were already  stars. Lubimov plays a modern copy of a Späht und Schmahl tangent piano built between 1794.

Lest anyone think modernist piano pieces all sound the same or operate on the same premises, Alexei Lubimov has chosen a program of key works that are not only quite varied in style, content, and expression, but are distinctive because of their originality. Charles Ives’ iconoclastic Piano Sonata No. 2, “Concord, Mass., 1840-60,” is an excellent example of his method of freely juxtaposing chaotic dissonances and jagged rhythms with raucous quotations of popular melodies and hymn tunes, in a spirit of rugged American individualism. To contrast this sonata, Lubimov has selected works from the Second Viennese School, to demonstrate the approaches taken by Anton Webern in his dodecaphonic Piano Variations, and Alban Berg in his loosely atonal Piano Sonata, Op. 1. Where Webern strives for a delicate balance of pitches and a purity of ideas, Berg’s music is intensely emotional, languid, and unsettled, and these characteristics show that their approaches diverged as much from each other as they did from Ives. Lubimov’s playing is sensitive and sympathetic, and his clear interpretations make this album something of a revelation, even for those who know these pieces well. To be sure, they are still challenging today, many decades after they were written, and they are enjoyed most by well-informed and adventurous listeners. Lubimov provides a fine introduction to these landmarks of modernism, and this exceptional disc from Zig Zag Territoires and Outhere Music is highly recommended.

If you had to name the bridge between Beethoven and Schubert, it would have to be Dusek. Sadly, his lack of a local following – Beethoven, Mozart, Hayden, Schubert and Brahms all had adopted home towns to root for them, after all – has made him less of an obvious choice. Born in Lithuania, he went to live in St Petersburg, where he dodged deportation to Siberia by moving to Paris, where he dodged a revolutionary tribunal by fleeing to London, which he had to leave in a hurry in order to escape prison, winding up in Hamburg… And eventually he would find himself in Prague, and, finally, Paris, where he died at the age of just 52. For this third volume of his complete sonatas, Alexei Lubimov – playing a 1799 Longman-Clementi fortepiano – has chosen two monuments of his mature period: the 18th Sonata “L’Adieu” of 1800 and the staggering 28th Sonata “The Invocation” from 1812. These works reveal a Dussek who is anchored as much in the past – with Bach’s polyphonic rigour and an elegance of writing taken from Mozart and Hayden – as he is in the present, with the power of Beethoven; and indeed the future with impressive turns of harmonic and pianistic daring. His years spent with London’s Broadwood piano-makers, with whom he would work on many innovations, were clearly not in vain. Alexei Lubimov studied with Heinrich Neuhaus – the great Russian piano teacher – and at the start of his career specialised in the hyper-avant-garde of Boulez, Cage and Stockhausen, before turning towards period instruments, which he was the first to bring to the very conservative Moscow Conservatory. From the 1980s he was able to excite the interest of the whole Soviet musical world in the fortepiano, before developing a global career.

Alexandrina Simeon: a singer and composer born in beautiful Varna on the verge of the Black Sea, at home between Bulgaria and Germany and living in Augsburg for many years now. Especially on her latest record „OCEAN TALES“, released by Unit Records in early 2018, she takes the audience back to her home country: The Bulgarian language, melodies and rhythms from former times, the musical legacy of the eastern edge of Europe, skillfully combined with western European jazz and completed with a brilliant guest performance of Benny Brown from Hamburg.
