On her GENUIN debut release, splendid Polish pianist Aleksandra Mikulska presents Franz Liszt’s reminiscences of the great loves of his life: they include both people and places as well as his own works that had grown dear to him. With broad musical lines and a wonderfully sensuous tone, the Special Prize-winner at the 15th International Frédéric Chopin Competition breathes new life into some of the most beautiful works of the repertoire: the Liebestraum and Hungarian Rhapsody, the Jota and the celebrated Frühlingslied, an arrangement of the song by Robert Schumann—a true delight for piano lovers!

The Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak needs no introduction. After having dazzled the opera stage and the discographic world both in duets and solo, she has devoted the whole of her new recording to Mozart. From The Magic Flute to Zaide, Mitridate and La Clemenza di Tito, the soprano embraces with equal talent the most famous arias of the master of Salzburg… and the verve of her concert presence. Far from limiting herself to just the lyrical attractiveness, she reveals its depth and brilliance by exploring the richness of the dialogue between voice and instruments: the brilliant musicians of the Morphing Chamber Orchestra of Vienna and Aleksandra Kurzak answer to each other, imitate and seek out each other. With them the arias of Mozart become the setting for a theatrical performance that is intimate, droll, and incredibly lively, in which the instruments have their own role to play in the unfolding drama. As an echo to this is added the Sinfonia concertante, for violin, viola and orchestra, one of the composer’s masterpieces in the genre, featuring the international soloists Yuuki Wong and Tomasz Wabnic.

Somewhat confusingly, three of Rossini’s heroines are named Matilde, and all are represented here. The earliest of them appears in Elisabetta, Regina d’Inghilterra (1815), the opera that opened Rossini’s Neapolitan period and a work just predating such popular scores as Barbiere and La Cenerentola. The name reappears as the heroine of Rossini’s operatic swansong, Guillaume Tell (1829), written for Paris in French but recorded here in its Italian version as Guglielmo Tell. “I’d love to sing it in the theatre. This is very mature music, showing the new direction that Rossini might have taken. But I must admit that when I’m preparing new roles I never worry too much about where they belong in a composer’s output. I concentrate hard on the technical side when working with my teacher, who also happens to be my mother” — the distinguished soprano Jolanta Żmurko — “but otherwise I need to keep things fresh and free for the interpretation to flow.”

The great showpiece “Bel raggio lusinghier” also puts the title role of Semiramide (1823) on Kurzak’s wish-list. “Because it was made famous by Joan Sutherland, I’ve followed her very beautiful ornamentation.” A rarely performed masterpiece on account of its challenges, its music is still much better known than Pamira’s aria from Le Siège de Corinthe (1826 — also heard here in an Italian version). And though Sigismondo (1814) has been described by the Rossini authority Richard Osborne as “arguably Rossini’s most unrevivable serious opera”, it is represented here for a good reason: the title character is the King of Poland. Kurzak includes an aria for Sigismondo’s wife Aldimira, the daughter of the King of Hungary, “to leave a small Polish mark on this recording”.

Even growing up around an opera house—thanks not only to her mother, but also because her father played French horn in the orchestra — Kurzak had few early opportunities to hear Rossini and has recollections from that time only really of L’italiana in Algeri. Yet despite there not being much of a Rossini tradition in Poland, she has earned her place alongside another Polish star, the contralto Ewa Podles ́, in the ranks of internationally acclaimed Rossinians. As she prepares new roles that may take her away from this composer, he will always occupy a unique place in her affections: “There is only one Rossini!” (John Allison)

“This is a dream come true.” It’s the new aspect of my career maybe even my new face as a singer. Im saying goodbye to most of the lighter repertoire Ive done for 20 years. When I started singing, it was indeed my dream to do this sort of repertoire, but I really did think of it as a dream and I never thought I would actually sing such an incredibly beautiful role as Elisabetta on stage. When I think of the arias on this album, I felt in the past that I would never sing them. I was taught that Im a coloratura soprano, and that doing characters such as the Queen of the Night ruled others out. But Ive been in love with these arias since I first heard opera, and its very touching for me that Im now allowed to sing this music. (Aleksandra Kurzak)

Bach Stories explores a new way of thinking about classical music and improvisation; it presents historical music practice in a contemporary form. This double album from Warner Classics bears the fruits of a friendship and collaboration between two young but already much-awarded musicians. Aleksander Dębicz (piano) and Marcin Zdunik (cello) combine virtuosity and musical drama with the sheer joy and freshness of music-making in a unique programme of chamber works by Bach and improvisations inspired by those works.

These improvisations – in a classical style rather than jazz – create a bridge between two periods, bringing Bach’s music closer to the modern ear by using new means of expression. The ‘Stories’ evoked in the title could be a simple idea, a fleeting memory or a labyrinthine drama. “Bach’s music stirred and inspired our imagination, evoking both simple associations and complex narrative schemes”, explain the musicians.

Acclaimed soloist and First Prize winner at the 2017 Tarrega International Guitar Competition, Alejandro Cordova has chosen a programme that presents five acknowledged masterpieces of the guitar repertoire, while also paying tribute to the great Andres Segovia- an inspiration to composers such as Manuel Ponce, whose Sonatina meridional evokes the lyrical warmth of Iberia. Covering a wide range of techniques and expressive forms that reveal the guitar’s sheer versatility, the distinctive Spanish moods and rhythms of Torroba, Jose and Tarrega are further contrasted by Johann Kaspar Mertz’s deeply eloquent Elegie. Alejandro Cordova was born in Cordoba, Mexico. His unique style is based on his exceptional musicality and technical prowess. He began his studies with Jesus Pena before attending the Faculty of Music of the University of Veracruz where he was under the tutelage of Consuelo Bolio, Massimo Gatta and Alfredo Sanchez. He also studied at the Accademia di chitarra in Pordenone and the Conservatory of Music Jacopo Tomadini, Udine.

Known as a vocalist who – for the most part – specialized in religious and inspirational works, Aled Jones (born December 29, 1970 in Bangor, Wales) was also a familiar voice on U.K. classical radio as well as a contestant on a ballroom dancing competition reality show. Signed to a recording contract before his teens, Jones was best known – at least in the first part of his career – for his version of “Walking in the Air” from the 1982 animated film The Snowman. Shortly thereafter, at the age of 16, Jones’ career took a bit of a tumble when his voice changed and deepened. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, he was back on-stage in 1995 in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and by the first few years of the 21st century, Jones had become a regular presenter on U.K. classical radio, both on Classic FM and eventually BBC Radio. In 2004 he released an album of holiday tunes, The Christmas Album, followed in 2005 by his full-length New Horizons. The year 2004 also saw Jones compete on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, exposing him to wider audiences. A greatest-hits compilation came out in 2006, featuring a duet with his younger self on his famous version of “Walking in the Air.” October 2007 saw the release of his next record, Reason to Believe, which featured a number of duets with other artists (including Welsh pop singer Cerys Matthews of Catatonia fame) and cracked the U.K. Top 20, peaking at number 15. In 2008 Jones returned to the theater, playing the lead roles in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and White Christmas, the former leading to his West End debut in 2014. The singer also went on to publish two books, 2009’s Aled’s Forty Favourite Hymns and 2010’s Favourite Christmas Carols. A number of best-of collections appeared in the years that followed before he went on to release the albums Forever in 2011 and The Heart of It All in 2015, the latter revisiting his Welsh folk roots. He followed up with One Voice in 2016, a record that featured Jones duetting with his younger self – a result of the discovery of an old unreleased recording of the singer in his teenage years at his parents’ home. Jones returned at the end of 2016 with the festive follow-up One Voice at Christmas, which saw him duetting with the late Sir Terry Wogan and once again with his 13-year-old self. Jones completed his One Voice trilogy with Believe in 2017. The album once again saw him singing in duet with his younger self on a selection of classical standards, and also duetting with his son Lucas on record for the first time. – Chris True & Rob Wacey
