For his new record, Pierre Genisson honors the legacy of the one known as the ‘King of Swing’ and his worldwide successes: Benny Goodman. Both composer and conductor, born in Chicago, Illinois, the clarinetist shared his musical life between jazz and classical music: He was the first to perform jazz music with black musicians in the famous Carnegie Hall in 1938. Though we know most of his jazz standards, he also contributed a lot to the development of the classic clarinet repertoire: for instance he distinguished himself performing Aaron Copland’s Concerto, Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs or Bartók’s Contrasts.

The Little Frog saxophone quartet (established 1979, closed 1989) was a Norwegian jazz group, consisting of Erik Balke, Odd Riisnaes, Vidar Johansen and Arne Frang. With Tore Brunborg in charge of Riisna, 4 men was released (Odin Records 1986). Brunborg was replaced by Olav Dale from 1986. The quartet was featured in Per Blom’s film Silver mouth (1981), played at several jazz festivals (e.g.a. Kongsberg Jazzfestival 1986, and contributed to Erik Wollo’s Images of Light (1990).

Pianist Joanne Brackeen’s debut album (after a barely documented period with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers) is a very impressive effort. Teamed with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Billy Hart, Brackeen plays in a complex and already original style, interpreting four of her tunes plus “Nefertiti,” Miles Davis’s “Circles” and “Old Devil Moon.” Her chord voicings are thick and sometimes quite dense, but this music is strangely accessible.

A fascinating blend of jazz and contemporary classical influences, How Time Passes is the debut album from the envelope pushing trumpeter and composer Don Ellis. Known for his extensive musical experimentation, particularly in the area of time signatures, Ellis began his long career in the New York City’s post bop and avant-garde jazz scenes of late 1950s. Most notably he appeared on Charles Mingus’ Mingus Dynasty, and albums by George Russell and Maynard Feguson. But he also worked with, among others, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Lionel Hampton, and Woody Herman. On subsequent albums, Ellis would take an even wilder direction. Here, on his first recoding date as a band leader, the experimentation begins. Ellis stretches the boundaries of bop-based jazz playing with time, tempo and meter. It is the start of his exploration of Third Stream – a fusion of jazz and contemporary classical music. The album title itself – How Time Passes – was taken from an article written by the controversial German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen on the “function of time.” The exceptional section features Ron Carter on bass, the underrated Jaki Byard on piano and saxophone, and Charlie Persip on drums. The LP includes extraordinary liner notes by Candid A&R man and producer Nat Hentoff, and noted musician, historian and writer Gunther Schuller – the originator of the term “Third Stream” – giving a context and insight that adds to the experience of hearing these extraordinary performances.

This was Phish’s 1st show at Deer Creek – an amphitheater with a capacity of 21,118 at the time. Phish has played this venue 22 times to-date. Reserved tickets cost $20.00 and the show was sold out. Fish wore his blue and white banana dress with Tipitina’s-style banana print. The vocals of Rift were flubbed but quickly recovered. Set II marked the first time Simple segued into David Bowie. Trey teased Mind Left Body during David Bowie. Possum was played with a heavy metal-ish feel. After this show the band and crew traveled 317 miles overnight to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Ever since their appearance in Europe over a thousand years ago, the “Roma” – the ethnonym that the Roma use to describe themselves – have been labeled with derogatory, disparaging, and ethnically insulting words such as “G*psy”, “Zigeuner”, “Zingari”, “Cygan”, etc…, words derived from the Greek “Atzinganoi”, which translates as “untouchable”. These designations reveal a brutal social hierarchy which continues to plague and condemn the Roma to a pariah status in many places world-wide, subjecting them to constant discrimination and persecution – punctuated by infernal periods of enslavement and genocide. For centuries, literature about the Roma came exclusively from the ‘outside’, by non-Roma authors looking in, and it is precisely this literature that has persistently perpetuated ethnic, social and cultural stereotypes that have proven so harmful to this minority. It is not until the twentieth century – but essentially only in the past fifty years, that Roma poets and writers have begun to express themselves in written form in Romani (or Romanes), a macrolanguage of Romani communities, or in the vernacular of the countries or regions within which they reside. These are watershed years, since for the first time, the Roma ‘speak’ from ‘within’ to authentically express what has been shrouded in the fog of popular imagination for ages.

From hard groove to softer moments, the SHIFTERS offer a wide range of atmosphere, likely to evoke a world in permanent motion and reconstruction.

Bristol’s country, soul and beyond band Phantom Limb return with their sophomore album ‘The Pines.’ Exquisitely produced and the perfect vehicle for lead singer Yolanda Quartey’s imperious golden throated tones. The group sound stronger than ever but as the first album was more or less all about burgeoning love, this one’s about love degenerating. Double angst here from one of the most talented singers and robust but underrated bands out there.Title track ‘The Pines’ sees the lass just wanting to get away from the mess and fine some peace in them there hills. A gut bucket rolling rocker with divine backing vocals and some pure emotional conviction. The stark ‘Tumbling Down’ hits a similar resonance too. With the classic line ‘I don’t want to beg for your love, my knees aren’t made for kneeling at your feet and all the pain inside me won’t keep me afraid.’ I suppose the next logical step for Quartey is murder ballads! She pours her heart and soul into these fine tunes and she’s hit her sweet spot with this material, even if the subject matter is amplifying…
