The personal generosity that made the Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson (1928–2015) such a warm and vibrant character extended also to his writing-desk: around a quarter of his enormous output is given over to transcriptions, mostly for piano, of music by other composers. Here he pays homage to three earlier colleagues whose music he particularly esteemed: Purcell, Delius and van Dieren. Stevenson described his version of Van Dieren’s String Quartet No. 5 (1931) as “transcribed as a piano sonata (which B. v. D. never composed)” – and thus it became the piano sonata which Stevenson himself never composed. The album ends with Stevenson’s brief but achingly beautiful harmonisation of Purcell’s The Queen’s Dolour – as exquisite an example of the transcriber’s art as anyone could wish.

This fourth volume in Christopher Guild’s ongoing survey of the piano music of the pianist-composer Ronald Stevenson (1928–2015) – a major figure in the cultural life of twentieth- century Scotland – presents works inspired by the human voice, where Stevenson was concerned above all to make the piano sing, to allow it to express human feeling as naturally as possible. That concern can be heard both in his own pieces and his many transcriptions of music by other composers, which balance sophisticated craftsmanship and a refreshing emotional directness.

This second album of piano music by the Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson (1928– 2015) focuses on several strands of his musical personality: his engagement with the folk traditions of Scotland and with Scottish cultural history, his concern to write rewarding music for young pianists, and his creative friendships with other musicians.

The music of the Edinburgh composer William Beaton Moonie (1883–1961) is as good as unknown. This first-ever album devoted to his piano music reveals a figure downstream from Schumann, Brahms and Grieg, writing in a conservative Romantic idiom coloured by echoes of the folk-music of his native Scotland. Many of these pieces, indeed, are concerned to evoke images of the Scottish countryside or suggest aspects of Scottish history.

Among the few who know his music, Francis George Scott (1880-1958), a son of the Scottish Borders, is admired for having written some of the best art-songs by any British composer. In this first recording of any of his piano music, a handful of lyrical early pieces contrast with the 58 Bartókian miniatures that constitute Scott’s Intuitions – brief but atmospheric distillations of Scottish song, dance and landscape – and a set of virtuoso transcriptions of eight Scott songs by Ronald Stevenson (1928–2015), the major Scottish pianist-composer of the past century.

The world-premiere recording of choral and instrumental music by the long-neglected Christopher Gibbons, second son of the famous Orlando. Featuring the Choir of the AAM (who make their recording debut), this disc surveys the broad expressive palette of a composer who provides the “missing link between the pre-Commonwealth world of William Lawes and the Restoration baroquerie of Henry Purcell”.

Born into an English musical family, organist and composer Christopher Gibbons (1615-1676) probably received early training from his famous father Orlando Gibbons. He sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal and went on to a distinguished career at Westminster Abbey and in the court of Charles II. With this showcase programme of motets, anthems, fantasias for strings, and organ voluntaries (all of which are receiving their first recording), Richard Egarr, the Academy of Ancient Music and the Choir of the AAM, aim to rescue the composer from unjust obscurity.

John Knowles Paine was the first American-born composer to earn widespread recognition for his larger-scale symphonic works. But his smaller-scale compositions—in particular his beautifully crafted piano pieces—have been largely forgotten. With this album’s lovely and wondrously performed music, the acclaimed pianist Christopher Atzinger seeks to redress such unjustified neglect. Being the eldest of the fabled “Boston Six” band of composers, Paine was also the first to receive advanced training in Europe. Some have called him the finest American composer of his time. And, as the nation’s first American-born music professor, the curriculum he developed at Harvard was adopted by academic music departments across the country and has profoundly influenced advanced American musical training ever since.

Christopher Allsop, then Assistant Director of Music at the cathedral ( and now of the Choir School) puts the organ through its paces. To obtain the best seat in the house Priory put its microphones high to the east of the two cases to obtain what we consider the best place from which to hear this instrument. This organ will be enlarged in the coming years.

The reunionais flutist and composer Christophe Zoogones has always been inspired by the gospel that he sang in his childhood, the jazz-rock of the Headhunters or of Weather Report whose records he used, the universe of jazz as a whole that he studied at the CIM, then at the Conservatoire de Paris( CRR), and finally maloya (reunionais music that claims creolity). In 2015, his debut album, “Kind of Zoo” recorded at the reunion, succeeded in a relevant fusion between maloya and jazz-rock. Five years later, Christophe Zoogones presents his new project: “Zoology” , where the orchestration is identical to the previous album: a quartet with flute, piano, electric bass and drums, but where the musicians are different and offer music that evolves towards New horizons.

The “An einsamer Quelle” project is the sequel to the “Sublime Idylle” CD which was released in 2018 by Klarthe. The project was dedicated to the works of Clara and Robert Schumann and already underlined the lyricism of the piano, notably with the op.39 lieder by Robert, adapted for the piano by Clara. For this new disc, the voice is once again in the spotlight, with transcriptions of the Lieder Morgen (1894) and Allerseelen (1885) arranged by Max Reger. And what could be more interesting than weaving a bond between Schumann, Strauss… and us! The Strauss who wrote his op.3 and op.9 in the 1880s is the same composer who, in 1948, would gratify us with his masterpiece “Vier Letzte Lieder” (Four last songs).

Christophe Rousset and the Talens Lyriques bring us to the stage of the Royal Academy of Music where Pygmalion, an act of ballet by Jean-Philippe Rameau inspired by an episode of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, was created in 1748. Love, showing empathy for Pygmalion’s despair of loving a statue, invigorates the sculpted woman who immediately falls in love with her creator. Very suggestive, the music of this tender and mischievous ballet deploys the grace of 18th century dances. Like Ovid’s Love, Christophe Rousset instils life in this score, one of Rameau’s greatest successes in his day, and offers us, thanks to his sense of drama and his impeccable leadership, a new and essential reading of this ballet.

A masterpiece born of the collaboration of composer Lully and his librettist Quinault, the “tragédie en musique” called Alceste caused a scandal when it was created in 1674. The tragic register was reserved for the theater, while the music was content with the comic vein. But thanks to the combined talents of Lully and Quinault, the stage of the Royal Academy of Music saw the development of the new tragic and lyrical genre.

The chorus and the nine soloists, directed with energy and delicacy by Christophe Rousset, portray their characters with passions true-to-life. Indeed, the libretto is based on a Cornelian dilemma. This timeless and moving theme of a thwarted love is embodied with accuracy. Moreover, the diction is perfect.

It is a reference version that Christophe Rousset and his Talens Lyriques have recorded. An interpretation where theater and music agree with a jubilatory harmony.
