Digitally remastered edition of the British Pomp Rock band’s 1975 album. A Night At The Opera, named after the Marx Bros film, is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest albums of all time. Exceptional on every level, musically, lyrically and artistically, Queen took the strongest elements of their previous two albums to make the ultimate winning combination. The most expensive album ever recorded at that time, it delivered Rock, Opera, Heavy Metal, romance, ballads, Pop, sci-fi Folk, music hall, Trad Jazz and even the National Anthem. The album contains perhaps the most famous Rock song of all time, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, which went on to spend 14 weeks at #1. Queen also recorded the first official Pop promo for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as they were on tour and could not appear on Top of The Pops and this video paved the way for MTV and VH1.

Los Angeles, 1965: Blues enthusiasts Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson (1943-1970) and Bob “The Bear” Hite (1943-1981) together with like-minded musicians found Canned Heat. They name the band after the title of a 1928 song by bluesman Tommy Johnson about a fuel containing methyl alcohol, also referred to as “canned heat”, which is misused by alcoholics as a substitute drug. In 1967 drummer Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra who is still a member today joins Canned Heat, while otherwise the band has seen a lot of personnel turnover in the course of its history. One year later Canned Heat’s successful hit single “On The Road Again” makes them popular worldwide. Following this chart success they have further hits with “Going Up The Country” (1968) and “Let’s Work Together” (1970). In August 1969 Canned Heat are part of the line-up of the legendary “Woodstock Music & Art Fair”. Apart from band albums such as their eponymous debut LP from 1967 or “Boogie With Canned Heat” from the following year they are featured on collaborations with genre greats such as John Lee Hooker (“Hooker ‘n Heat”, 1971), Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown (“Gate’s On The Heat”, 1973) or Memphis Slim (“Memphis Heat”, 1974).

Under the direction of Keno Weber, the Quilisma Jugendchor Springe presents the first complete recording of Gabriel Fauré’s (1845–1924) sacred works. After completing his academic education in 1865, Fauré was primarily active as a church musician and worked at the parish church „La Madeleine“ in Paris from 1877 to 1905. Almost all of his sacred works were written during this time, including his well-known Requiem. The voices of the young singers of the Quilisma Jugendchor provide insight into how the music may have sounded in the 19th century, performed by the boys’ choir at „La Madeleine“ under the direction of the composer himself.

Quartet Base is a long-lasting formation. For 18 years now, Sebastien Beaumont has been writing a music that relies on the trust set in between the musicians. Based on the inmost, this new repertoire releases a deep, tensed, but sometimes funny and mischievous proposition. Texts, melodies, climates and sound memories are so many materials to a narrative and expressionist music.

The new album of the Rosamonde Quartet, featuring the classics of Haydn and Beethoven.

Haydn may not have been the author of the very first string quartet in history, but he created the so-called Viennese model of this kind which quickly established itself throughout Europe and served as a cornerstone for all those who, until today, have composed for this instrumental formation.

In the history of this Viennese lineage, Beethoven plays a very special role since he was a pupil of Haydn. However, if he received from the hands of the one who was called at the time “Papa Haydn” 1st torch of the quartet, he made it shine in such a personal way, made it evolve so radically and the door so high that with him we witness a second birth of the kind. The disc of the Rosamonde Quartet judiciously combines one of Haydn’s last Quartets Opus74 No. 3, his 59th, dating from 1792-1793 and Beethoven’s Opus 18 No. 1, which is in fact the second he composed.

“The finest string quartet, unquestionably, that our century has known.” In 1951, when the Quartetto Italiano first visited the USA, composer Virgil Thomson’s was enthused: “Perfection is the only word to describe this playing.” The quartet’s members, who had met while studying in Siena, made their ensemble debut in 1945. They went on to enthral audiences around the world with interpretations of proverbial beauty, insight and architectural elegance.

In this remastered programme, the legendary group presents works from Italian classical composers Baldassare Galuppi, Luigi Boccherini & Giuseppe Cambini.

Historical recordings: The ensemble’s confidently-chosen name made it clear from the outset that the Quartetto Italiano saw itself not simply as an Italian string quartet among many, but as the authoritative one. The ensemble was soon recognized as a pioneer of Italian chamber music culture following the Second World War. Through their tireless obsession with detail, in-depth exploration of the works’ musical expression, and the remarkable homogeneity of their quartet sound, the Quartetto Italiano conquered a firm place in the top league of leading string quartets over the first two decades of their career.

After a first album noticed by the critics (see here), the Lontano Quartet, founded in Paris in 2015, continues its original exploration of the repertoire through daring and committed projects. The rediscovery of little-known works in concert and on record, such as the Quartet by Vladimir Sommer (of which the Lontano provided the French premiere), or the Two pieces for Quartet by Aaron Copland, is at the heart of the approach that unites the four musicians since their meeting. Also committed since its beginnings alongside the young contemporary repertoire, the Lontano Quartet supports creation through an intense activity of commissions, and launched in 2022 an international call for compositions, which has garnered immense success (more than 380 works in competition).

‘When we approach a composer, we like to immerse ourselves in his or her early works, in order to understand the evolution of the person behind the score.

‘It was quite naturally that the idea emerged of coupling a youthful quartet, no.10, composed at the age of sixteen, with a masterpiece by the mature Schubert, the “Death and the Maiden” Quartet no.14. As in the case of Mozart on our first recording, we wanted to present two different atmospheres with two quartets by the same composer.

‘This journey through time sheds a new light on the later works, because the process of getting to know the young Franz Schubert naturally means deepening our knowledge of his language, but also allows us to refine our appropriation of the style, sound and articulation specific to him. ‘In Quartet no.10, we tried to achieve purity in our playing, a crystalline sound that allows the music to unfold in the most fluid and natural way, keeping in mind the intimacy of the family living room for which these pages were written.

‘In no.14, more tormented, brusquer, more intense, we attempt to pay homage to the work’s symphonic dimension, and to its most sombre, most violent asperities. ‘Two sides to one man: the bright and dark faces of Schubert.’

Quicksilver Messenger Service’s debut effort was a little more restrained and folky than some listeners had expected, given their reputation for stretching out in concert. While some prefer the mostly live Happy Trails, this self-titled collection is inarguably their strongest set of studio material, with the accent on melodic folk-rock. Highlights include their cover of folksinger Hamilton Camp’s “Pride of Man,” probably their best studio track; “Light Your Windows,” probably the group’s best original composition; and founding member Dino Valenti’s “Dino’s Song” (Valenti himself was in jail when the album was recorded). “Gold and Silver” is their best instrumental jam, and the 12-minute “The Fool” reflects some of the best and worst traits of the psychedelic era. ~ Richie Unterberger

Quinn Sullivan has been a music professional for more than 75 percent of his life. He’s shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Los Lobos, The Roots, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi and Joe Bonamassa, and he opened for B.B. King, who later invited him to play his treasured “Lucille” guitar. He has performed on concert and festival dates throughout the United States – including at storied venues like Hollywood Bowl, RFK Stadium and Madison Square Garden – traveled overseas – performing at both the Montreux Jazz Festival and India’s Mahindra Blues Festival – and played several editions of the Experience Hendrix Tour, backed by Jimi’s original bassist Billy Cox. He’s also appeared on national TV, with guest appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Oprah, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan and twice on The Ellen DeGeneres show.

Yes, Sullivan has packed some extraordinary experience into his decade-long career, and that’s even more remarkable when you consider that he’s only 17. His third studio album, Midnight Highway, will be released on January 27th in North America, and on March 24th in the rest of the world.

Early, little-known, free-spirited chamber works from music’s supreme teenage genius.

By the time Felix Mendelssohn composed his first three opus-numbered works he had a substantial catalogue of chamber, vocal and orchestral works to his credit – all at the age of 15! This trio of piano quartets predates the miraculous Octet for strings, yet each of them holds its distinct appeal. A fluent grasp of form and voicing can be taken for granted in one already thoroughly schooled in compositional technique. Mendelssohn was still finding his own voice, melodically speaking, while emerging from the shadow of Mozart’s and Beethoven’s, but these are already pieces with his fingerprints and no-one else’s, even in 1824, when Beethoven and Schubert were still alive.
