From the early 50s, Audrey Morris’ delicate piano and forceful voice was an asset to any intimate Chicago club —or bistros, whatever be the case— into the wee hours, bucking the current taste for bawdy chanteuses and cultivating a repertoire of obscure, understated material, as she displayed in her two first albums. On the first, “Bistro Ballads”, she provides her own spare, sophisticated piano accompaniment, supported by the sensitive bass of Johnny Pate and the hushed cymbals of Charles Walton, as she brings her soulful style to bear on some untarnished ballads worthy of her skill and intelligence.

But she has a wonderful, simple quality to her vocal style. Highly recommended. She does some songs I was not familiar with.

Decca Gold is proud to announce the forthcoming release of Sing Happy, the live performance of the New York Philharmonic’s 2018 Spring Gala starring Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald, conducted by Andy Einhorn. Recorded live on May 1 at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, the recording represents McDonald’s first collaboration with Decca Gold – as well as her first solo recording with full orchestra.
Sing Happy features many songs that are either new to McDonald’s repertoire or have never before been recorded by her – such as “I Am What I Am” from La Cage aux Folles, “Vanilla Ice Cream” from She Loves Me, and “Children Will Listen” from Into The Woods– and offers a sneak peek at the repertoire she’s performing on her upcoming North American concert tour.

From the cutlery in the blender indictment of surface beauty “Paper Doll” to the Lone Star drive of “Just To Be With You” and the tumbledown melody of “Sit Here and Cry,” this is a high energy box cutter of emotion: 14 songs marked by the bite and punch of smart girls who know there’s more to life than a cold beer and cut-offs. “I tell people there’s not a lot of happy songs,” the Texas/Nashville hybrid cautions. “But they’re not unhappy songs, either. It’s life… the way it is, and what’s wrong with that?” There’s a definite viscerality to New City Blues. From the yearning title track to the slow-building “Loveless Rolling Stone,” the sense of displacement marking so many young people uncertain about the future tempers the pools of guitar lines, the way her voice has just the slightest ache when she finds a note’s center. “

Bill Evans once referred to Japanese ‘Sumiye’ ~ ink-wash paintings ~ in his liner notes for the original recording of Kind of Blue by Miles Davis sextet in 1958: “There is a Japanese visual art in which the artist is forced to be spontaneous. He must paint on a thin stretched parchment with a special brush and black water paint in such a way that an unnatural or interrupted stroke will destroy the line or break through the parchment. Erasures or changes are impossible….”

Attitudes was a pop/rock quartet from Los Angeles made up of some well-known names — producer/composer/arranger David Foster on keyboards, guitarist Danny Korthmar (who has worked extensively with James Taylor and Don Henley), bassist Paul Stallworth, and noted session drummer Jim Keltner. The group was signed to George Harrison’s Dark Horse Records label and made two albums in the mid-’70s; a single, “Sweet Summer Music”, charted at number 94 in 1976. ~ William Ruhlmann

Another beautiful MPS session from 1971, featuring legendary post bop guitarist Atilla Zoller and Japanese jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh. It’s “a harmonically challenging and at times tonally ambiguous, though relatively straight ahead with lots of delightful free wheeling interplay between Satoh and Zoller”.

Attacca World Music members all come from different musical backgrounds. As a result, our music grows not only from the style, phraseology and the formal language of classical music and contemporary jazz, but also, very emphatically, draws inspiration from authentic folk music. We believe these influences make our sound more vivid, and function as cohesive force in our band. Our inspiration and guide is partly the folk music of the Carpathian Basin, particularly the pure source of Hungarian peasant music, which was extensively researched by Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, and partly the 20th century works of these two composers. Choreographed dance also appears in our music, accompanying some of our tracks. It represents different regional dances which have been part of our folk culture and traditions for centuries. On March 27 Music Theories Recordings/Mascot Label Group release ‘Ayreon – Electric Castle Live and Other Tales’, a 3 LP set of last year’s live spectacular performance of the third Ayreon album ‘Into The Electric Castle’.
Over four nights at Tilburg’s 013 venue (scene of the Ayreon Universe series of live shows in 2017) Lucassen, his band and one of modern progressive music’s most emphatic of casts celebrated the 20th anniversary of the third Ayreon album in front of thousands of adoring fans who had flown in from around the world.
Originally released in 1998, ‘Into The Electric Castle’ is a classic tale of an epic quest. Set in ‘no time and no space’, it tells the story of eight individuals who are guided by a mysterious voice and tasked with finding the mysterious Electric Castle and discover what’s inside. The entire album was performed live, featuring original album singers and musicians, such as Thijs Van Leer, Fish, Damian Wilson, Edward Reekers, Anneke van Giersbergen, and several special guests including Simone Simons (Epica) and Star Trek’s John De Lancie as narrator.
The ‘Other Tales’ are deep cuts from Arjen Lucassen’s other projects, such as The Gentle Storm, Ambeon, Stream of Passion, Guilt Machine, Star One, his solo-album Arjen Anthony Lucassen and a very special Marillion cover.

The Theater Equation is an upcoming 2016 live album and DVD by Arjen Anthony Lucassen’s progressive rock/metal rock opera project Ayreon. The Theater Equation consists of a live performance, with cast, choir and small orchestra, of the 2004 album The Human Equation. It marks the first time an Ayreon album was played live entirely, and the first Ayreon live release, although two live albums by other Lucassen projects had previously featured Ayreon songs: Live on Earth by Star One (2003) and Live in the Real World by Stream of Passion (2006). The Theater Equation consisted of four shows, all played in Rotterdam between September 18 and 20, 2015, with the last performance being the one recorded for the album.
Most of the cast of the original album was featured on the tour, including James LaBrie of Dream Theater (Me), Marcela Bovio of Stream of Passion (Wife), former Mostly Autumn member Heather Findlay (Love), Eric Clayton (Reason), and Irene Jansen (Passion). Despite the announcement that he will not take part of the shows due to his reluctance to play live and that he will only support the project as an support advisor, Lucassen was on stage after stepping out of the Dream Sequencer at the very end of the show, thus performing the part of Forever of the Stars. Some other regular collaborators of Lucassen joined the project, most notably Anneke van Giersbergen replacing Mikael Åkerfeldt as Fear.

‘Transitus’ is the new studio album of Ayreon. It builds around an entirely new story, not connected to the Ayreon universe although as always it does have some subtle links. The sci-fi theme makes way for a gothic ghost story set (partly) in the 19th century with elements of horror and the supernatural. It’s on a dark thunderous night where our story of Abby and Daniel begins.

The Source is the ninth studio album from Ayreon (aka Arjen Anthony Lucassen) and follows 2013’s The Theory of Everything. As with previous Ayreon albums, The Source, is a concept piece and also serves as the prequel to 2008’s 01011001. Featuring no less than 11 vocalists, the album’s classic rock sound tells the story of the Forever — an alien race that forms the basis of each of the Ayreon albums. ~ Rich Wilson
