SOMM Recordings adds to its acclaimed treasure trove of historic recordings with “Volume III of Elgar from America”, again masterminded by the extraordinary restoration talents of Lani Spahr. Here the centrepiece is a live 1959 Carnegie Hall recording of Elgar’s masterpiece, The Dream of Gerontius, with the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra conducted by one of the composer’s most eloquent and ardent champions, Sir John Barbirolli. Elgar hailed Barbirolli as “a rising hope of music in England for whom I have admiration and in whose work I have confidence”. His trust in the conductor led to a long, mutually admiring relationship between two men who did so much to define English music. The soloists in The Dream of Gerontius include Richard Lewis (Gerontius), Maureen Forrester (The Angel) and Morley Meredith (The Priest and the Angel of the Agony).

History will undoubtedly enshrine this disc as a watershed the likes of which may never truly be appreciated. Giant Steps bore the double-edged sword of furthering the cause of the music as well as delivering it to an increasingly mainstream audience. Although this was John Coltrane’s debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one. Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers – who was the only bandmember other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated – replicating the lineup featured on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course. At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane’s tenor solos. All seven pieces issued on the original Giant Steps are likewise Coltrane compositions. He was, in essence, beginning to rewrite the jazz canon with material that would be centered on solos – the 180-degree antithesis of the art form up to that point. These arrangements would create a place for the solo to become infinitely more compelling. This would culminate in a frenetic performance style that noted jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately dubbed “sheets of sound.” Coltrane’s polytonal torrents extricate the amicable and otherwise cordial solos that had begun decaying the very exigency of the genre – turning it into the equivalent of easy listening. He wastes no time as the disc’s title track immediately indicates a progression from which there would be no looking back. Line upon line of highly cerebral improvisation snake between the melody and solos, practically fusing the two. The resolute intensity of “Countdown” does more to modernize jazz in 141 seconds than many artists do in their entire careers. Tellingly, the contrasting and ultimately pastoral “Naima” was the last tune to be recorded, and is the only track on the original long-player to feature the Kind of Blue quartet. What is lost in tempo is more than recouped in intrinsic melodic beauty. Both Giant Steps [Deluxe Edition] and the seven-disc Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings offer more comprehensive presentations of these sessions.

The arrival of this recording of Drone Mass—some seven years after its premiere performance and four years after Jóhann Jóhannsson’s death—somewhat blurs the definition of what a “posthumous” release looks like for a contemporary classical composer. Jóhannsson’s work is seldom decoupled from his playing of it, featuring him as the primary performer, but does not perform on this recording though he did at its premiere and several other performances. Additionally, the composition itself was commissioned by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), who are performing it here (and who also performed it with Jóhannsson), making this release—originally recorded in 2019—a discographically unique one. It is also, more importantly, a musically intriguing one. As with much of Jóhannsson’s work—whether for classical ensembles, film scores, or electronic experimentation—the pieces are both tense and elegiac, toying with form and structure to evoke both a well-defined soundscape and a dynamic emotional response. Rather than digging into a postmodern take on chamber music or ambient electronics, here, Jóhannsson is putting to work the vocal skills of a large ensemble (the eight-piece Theatre of Voices) to deliver his hymn-like interpretations of the Coptic Gospel of the Egyptians, writings which were discovered in the Nag Hammadi library in the mid-20th century. Unintelligible to modern ears but deeply evocative nonetheless, the vocal polyphony on display is immersive and haunting. Early on in the recording, the “Triptych in Mass” sets the tone with its absolutely dizzying combination of voices, dissonance, and drone, leaving the listener both breathless and anxious. Other segments—”The Last Foul Wind I Ever Knew” and the two-part “Divine Objects”—are similarly intense. By the time “The Low Drone of Circulating Blood, Diminishes With Time” initiates the closing four-part sequence of the piece, Jóhannsson has shown that he is clearly disinterested in easy beauty or background ambience and is, instead, pursuing a thoughtful, dynamic, and intent music that rewards a listener’s focus and engagement. It’s a forceful and unforgiving piece that posits an exciting shift in direction from the composer that, sadly, appears to have not gotten any further exploration. Nonetheless, as a document of one of his final works, Drone Mass is an exciting and exhilarating statement. – Jason Ferguson

Based on the sound of the acoustic jazz quartet, the “Johannes Metzger Quartet” goes its own way in contemporary jazz.

The line-up offers the four musicians from Berlin and New York enough freedom to act improvisationally. At the same time, there is no need to compromise compositionally.

Rhythmically fine, melodically fresh, yet accessible – the sound of the band impresses with transparency, which, however, leaves nothing to be missed in harmonic expressiveness.

Enriched at selected points by electronic effects, rousing energy and pulsating grooves are created, as well as spherical soundscapes that encourage the audience to close their eyes and let themselves fall.

Schubert was a competent violinist and violist and his four violin sonatas pose no problems for skilled players. It is strange, then, that so few really recommendable recordings of them have been made. Apart from these beautiful interpretations by Martzy and Antonietti, which have become legendary, one can find individual works by Fritz Kreisler and Sergei Rachmaninov, or Josef Suk and Jan Panenka, but few others that catch the essential simplicity of the pieces. The Rondo brillant and the Fantasy on Schubert’s song Sei mir gegrüsst, on the other hand, are among the most difficult works in the violin-and piano repertoire, written for the shortlived Bohemian virtuoso Josef Slavík. Adolf Busch and Rudolf Serkin were famous for playing them but such big names as Jascha Heifetz and David Oistrakh have fallen flat on their faces, trying to unravel the secrets of the Fantasy. Martzy and Antonietti bring beautiful, meticulously prepared playing to all half dozen pieces. Their interpretations, which are well balanced and clearly recorded for the time, have an inherent strength but also pliancy, transparency and unsentimental sweetness where required.

Johanna Martzy (26 October 1924 – 13 August 1979) was a Hungarian violinist.

She was born in Timișoara, Romania in 1924 and debuted at 13. She toured in the 1940s and 1950s. After that decade her renown in North America, at least, declined and her death from cancer, in Glarus in 1979, was not well noted.

She was referred to by Glenn Gould in his essay “We who are about to be disqualified salute you,” as “an artist who has always seemed to me to be, at least in North America, the most underrated of the great violinists of our age.”

She won 1st prize at Geneva competition in 1947.[citation needed]

Among her chamber music recordings those of Schubert have been thought particularly special.

She was married to conductor Béla de Csillery during much of her period of renown in the 1940s and 1950s, but the marriage was dissolved in 1959.

In 1954, then at the zenith of her career, Johanna Martzy was convinced by Walter Legge to leave Deutsche Grammophon for Columbia, preluding a short but fruitful collaboration. Her first recording session was made with Paul Kletzki, and dedicated to absolute masterpieces of the German romantic repertoire with concertos by Brahms and Mendelssohn. Martzy’s version of Beethoven’s Romances is on top of the discography.

Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius, alongside Grieg the two giants in Nordic classical music, were both born in 1865. Both also received their first musical training on the violin, earning valuable insights when it came to writing for the instrument. Their respective Violin Concertos were composed some six years apart – Sibelius’ in 1904-05 and Nielsen’s in 1911 – and belong to the most performed works of either composer. They are nevertheless as different from each other as are the artistic temperaments of their makers. While retaining the traditional three-movement concerto form, Sibelius composed something closer to a Late-Romantic orchestral tone poem giving the orchestra unusual prominence. Nielsen on the other hand opted for an unconventional form, reminiscent of the Baroque concerto grosso: the spiky, neoclassical work is nominally in two movements, but with each movement having a slow and a fast section.

Call Joe Simon the reluctant soul star. Despite his countless hits in the 1960s and ’70s, his heart just wasn’t in it, though the sound proved otherwise. Thankfully, that’s not a bit apparent on this collection, which consists of his fabulous, hit-laden discography from 1966-1970 with producer Richbourg at the helm for Sound Stage 7 Records.

17 albums in 35 years is an impressive feat. Even more impressive, however, is that Joe Satriani has always kept his quality high over time. he has received 15 Grammy nominations, but has yet to win one. Nevertheless, the musician is one of the best guitarists in instrumental rock today. This is also confirmed by his new, 18th studio album “The Elephants Of Mars”, which also marks the beginning of his collaboration with the earMUSIC label.

The album was made, how could it be otherwise, during the Corona pandemic and an accompanying break from concerts. Satriani and his live band wrote and recorded the 14 tracks in various locations around the world. But despite those constraints, or perhaps because of them, they wanted to do something more ambitious, using their time to create a wide-ranging set of songs that revealed a variety of influences. “We did everything. We tried the craziest ideas. And we tried every idea we had to turn something on its head and see what could happen,” Satriani writes on his website. “Sahara,” the first single from The Elephants Of Mars, is the best example of that.

In the wake of the new record, the guitarist says he challenged himself to create a “new standard” for instrumental guitar albums. He wanted to move away from what he describes as the “classic rock” of the last few albums he’s released. “I want to show people that an instrumental guitar album can have far more creative and fun elements than I think people are using right now,” Satriani says.

Joep Beving, heaven-bent in the world of streaming contemporary classical music, returns to the piano with Hermetism solo. The Dutch composer and pianist’s fourth album for Deutsche Grammophon will be released on April 8, 2022. Ancient philosophy inspired Beving’s recording: “I hope the music comforts and creates community,” he says, because although Beving draws from a sense of melancholy, he wants to inspire hope with the twelve pieces he plays here on his beloved Schimmel piano. Already with the highly successful albums Solipsism, Prehension and Henosis, Beving sought answers to complex philosophical questions in his music. What next, he asked himself after the trilogy, and initially devoted himself to composing for a Dutch film and a play. Only gradually did the idea for his latest project take shape. “I sat down alone at my piano to feel at home and in tune with myself and my surroundings,” he says. “I wanted to do what felt right, to look back at the beginnings, to play piano solo, but at the same time, the pieces should be based on what I had learned while making the trilogy.” After the viral success of his debut in 2015, Beving has long appeared as number one on streaming platforms today. His tracks have been streamed over half a billion times to date, and his concerts are also selling out worldwide. With Hermetism, he seeks to reach listeners on a deep level. “In all the craziness of recent times, the album was where I came back to,” he says. “So Hermetism is also my own medicine against the pandemic.”
