German Cellist Jan Vogler’s new album features two modern cello concertos. The first is the world premiere recording of the cello concerto “Three Continents” by Nico Muhly (*1981), Sven Helbig (*1968) and Zhou Long (*1953). Three Continents Cello Concerto is a unique collaborative work celebrating the sheer diversity of three composers from three different continents (USA, Germany, China) and almost three different generations. Each movement of the concerto takes a different view of the role of the soloist: Muhly’s Cello Cycles uses the large orchestra to striking effect to create a soundscape full of color. Rather than spotlighting the soloist, this movement features the cello as part of the texture very much as in a Baroque concerto grosso. By contrast, Helbig’s Aria opens with a series of atmospheric chords cycling through the lower strings of the cello and highlights the beautiful singing qualities of the instrument. Long’s lively final movement, Tipsy Poet, has a more narrative structure based on a well-known Chinese poem and features evocations of Chinese instruments in a colorful soundscape. The result is a fascinating contrasting whole, celebrating musical styles across a vast cultural space. This piece was world-premiered by Jan Vogler with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra (WDR), conducted by Cristian M celaru at the Dresden Music Festival 2019. The second cello concerto on the album is the Cello Concerto No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 1975). Jan Vogler recorded the Cello Concerto No. 2 by Shostakovich with the orchestra of Mariinsky Theater St. Petersburg under Valery Gergiev also during the Dresden Music Festival 2019. Their concerts received great critical acclaim. “Jan Vogler sings with his instrument, full of happiness and enthusiasm, it seems, with admirably flawless technique. One notices how much he is with the music, how he is absorbed in it, how he almost seems to be grown together with his cello.” (rbb Kulturradio)

New love, position, power, revenge, disguise, mistaken identity, complications and passionate devotion the full spectrum of baroque opera seria is here in this brilliant, vivid setting of a powerful and moving story.
Pergolesi – a musical genius cut off in his prime. Famed for his Stabat Mater, even though he died aged just 26 he had already completed four opera seria; Adriano in Siria is the third of these.
Composing for only around a decade before he succumbed to tuberculosis aged 26, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was so well known for his music that the instant that his death was known, all Italy manifested an eager desire to hear and possess his productions … – [Charles Burney]
With a libretto by Metastasio, Adriano in Siria is a complicated yet understandable and empathetic tale of love, set within a problematic political backdrop.
Adriano in Siria enjoyed a lavish premiere in 1734, starring the great mezzo-soprano castrati, Caffarelli. To play the same role (Farnaspe), Deccas new recording features the modern-day Caffarelli Franco Fagioli.
Featuring a first-rate cast of Romina Basso, Yuriy Mynenko, Dilyara Idrisova, Juan Sancho and Cigdem Soyarslan; accompanied by the exuberant Polish orchestra Capella Cracoviensis under the baton of Jan Tomasz Adamus.

Franz Liszt drove a wedge between music fans open to innovative ideas and more traditional listeners. As the creator of the symphonic poem genre and programme music, he initiated a veritable trend of thought towards a new poetics. Inversely, partisans of Brahms felt that Liszt ran counter to the very essence of abstract music. On this digital only release, pianist Jan Michiels relives from the inside this “war of the Romantics” between progressives and conservatives through refined, intelligent readings of works by Liszt, Brahms and Schumann. But the pianist also offers a reconciliation from Schönberg, in its transcription for solo piano, combining the “traditional” on the motif with a form based on Liszt’s strokes of inspiration.

It was in Prague and Brno, the two largest cities in what is now the Czech Republic, that Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček – the principal representatives of the nineteenth-century Czech national school, along with Bedřich Smetana – launched their respective compositional careers. While Janáček, thirteen years younger than Dvořák, saw the latter as a father figure, the two men shared the same poetic Slavic soul. Indeed, Janáček said of Dvořák: ‘I could exchange his personality for his works; it is as if his melodies came straight from my heart. Nothing can ever break such a bond.’ In his fourth solo recording for Fuga Libera, Jan Michiels places this shared Slavic consciousness and musicality in the perspective of the almost filial relationship between the two composers, for example by interspersing the pieces from two eminently lyrical cycles: Dvořák’s Poetic Tone Pictures op.85 (1889) and Janáček’s On an Overgrown Path (1900-11).

For Ferruccio Busoni, Bach’s music was the root and the foundation of piano playing. His many transcriptions confirm this point of view, whilst his monumental Fantasia Contrappuntistica attempts to provide a conclusion to Bach’s unfinished Kunst der Fuge. Busoni received a great deal of criticism for this, to which he replied “the musical art-work exists both within and outside of Time… there is no Old or New. There is only Known or Unknown”. Today — one century and many fashions of “authentic” ways of performing Bach later — is possibly the time to rediscover the true voice of this great musician; for Bach, music was like “a divine child who did not touch the earth with his feet but floated on air”. Jan Michiels takes you into this divine air with an ‘old’ Bechstein from 1860 as well as with a brand new Straight Strung Grand Piano by Chris Maene.

The trio format has always been something of an ideal for Jan Lundgren. That particular buzz when communication between the musicians in a trio is direct, immediate and ever-present…when the trio keeps a constant sense of forward motion and development…when the players collectively remain open to the inspiration of every millisecond. These are the virtues which Lundgren sees as the recipe for the kind of openness, freedom, subtlety and excellence of a trio at its best.

Lisiecki performs with technical assurance in this collaboration with Christian Zacharias, who leads the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Mozart’s Piano Concertos nos. 20 & 21 are technically challenging pieces and are well-respected in the classical repertoire. Lisiecki displays unworldly virtuosity, far beyond his years. The performances are glowing and compelling. Absolutely essential.

If Mozart was a child prodigy, the Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki, who here performs both works with assurance and skill, appears something of an equivalent…he is one to watch. – Scotsman

Jan Lisiecki was still only 23 when he released this, his fifth album for Deutsche Grammophon. It focuses on two of Mendelssohn’s concertos. Piano Concerto No. 1 was written for himself to play when he was about Lisiecki’s age. He must have been a fantastic pianist and Lisiecki proves a splendidly poetic, vibrant advocate. Piano Concerto No. 2, which drew praise from Schumann, has terrific power, and Lisiecki and the thrillingly energetic Orpheus Chamber Orchestra do it proud, treating it as chamber music on a big scale. Alongside the two concertos, Lisiecki gives us a pair of Mendelssohn’s finest solo works, which he plays with characteristic elegance and refinement.
