After Bremen/Lausanne, after The Köln Concert, after the epic Sun Bear Concerts, the next development in Jarrett’s solo concerts was the all-embracing music captured here. Two 1981 improvised concerts from Austria and Germany are featured, recorded respectively at the Festspielhaus Bregenz and the Herkulessaal Munich, venues noted for outstanding acoustics. While the Bregenz concert has hitherto been available as a single CD, this set marks the first appearance of the complete Munich performance on compact disc. The 3-album set includes extensive text booklet with liner notes by Keith Jarrett, an essay by Swiss critic Peter Rüedi, and poetry by Michael Krüger.

“The Bregenz/Munich concerts were Jarrett’s most brilliant live solo recordings to date; his level of inspiration is quite extraordinary, and the music covers a wider musical and emotional range than ever.”
– Jarrett biographer Ian Carr

Digitally remastered and expanded edition featuring nine bonus tracks (one of them previously unreleased). All In A Night’s Work was the ninth studio album by the funk and disco group KC And The Sunshine Band, which was produced by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch. The album was released in 1982 on the Epic label. The album had a more commercial sound than their 1981 album The Painter, with highlights that include “(You Said) You’d Give Me Some More” and “Party With Your Body”, two of the most joyous 80’s dance confections imaginable. The former features an intro that is strikingly similar to the one featured on Patti LaBelle’s “New Attitude” a couple of years later, and the latter’s lyrics (“Jazzercise is the latest trend”) are sure to prompt a smile. The album also includes “Give It Up’, which charted in the UK but failed to make an impression stateside, at least until it was added to KC’s next album, KC 10, a couple of years later. This expanded edition also includes covers of Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight” and Sly Stone’s “Thank You”, but after revisiting the rhythm and groove of All In A Night’s Work, we hope Casey never stops wanting to be our Boogie Man.

Carl Maria von Weber’s achievements as a composer were considerable and influential, demonstrating new possibilities in opera and orchestration, particularly in the handling of wind instruments. His attractive, lyrical style is ideal for the making of arrangements, and the impressive and beautifully proportioned Flute Sonata is a virtuoso masterpiece, as is the operatic Grand Duo Concertant. There is a feeling of solemnity in the G minor Trio, an unusual work with an enigma at its heart: the song-like Schäfer’s Klage or ‘Shepherd’s lament’ – the origins of which remain a source of conjecture.

The combination of flute and guitar was a feature of early tango recordings – instruments central both to the genre and to the music of Astor Piazzolla. The composer’s quintessential Histoire du Tango charts the form’s evolution from its appearance in the barrios of Buenos Aires to its eventual assimilation by classical composers. The Six ‘Etudes tanguistiques for solo flute is Piazzolla’s only work for a melodic unaccompanied instrument. The remainder of the programme presents a sequence of arrangements by Vicente Coves and Kazunori Seo and includes some of Piazzolla’s most famous and beautiful compositions as well as preserving a historically important, previously unreleased recitation by Horacio Ferrer.

Ludwig van Beethoven stands as a giant in music history for his great symphonies, piano sonatas and string quartets, and the challenges of deafness later in life. This programme shows the younger Beethoven’s facility as a creator of light and entertaining chamber works as enjoyable to perform as they are to hear. Taking their cues from Mozart, the Duos build on sonata form and dance movements, the slightly later Serenade taking the shape of a genial 18th-century divertimento.

Special duet featuring Japanese vocalist Minako Yoshida and jazz/fusion guitarist Kazumi Watanabe. Kazumi Watanabe has for the past 20 years been one of the top guitarists in fusion, a rock-oriented player whose furious power does not mask a creative imagination. Watanabe studied guitar at Tokyo’s Yamaha Music School and he was a recording artist while still a teenager. In 1979, he formed the group Kylyn and, in 1983, he put together the Mobo band. Several of his recordings have been made available by Gramavision and they show that he ranks up with Al DiMeola (when he is electrified) and Scott Henderson among the pacesetters in the idiom.

I Insist is the debut album from Brooklyn-based saxophonist and composer Kazemde George. The title is a shout-out to Max Roach’s landmark 1960 protest album We Insist! Freedom Now Suite, a statement of George’s own determined disposition as a Black American, and an acknowledgement of our turbulent times. Leading a quintet of stellar New York players – vocalist Sami Stevens, keyboardist Isaac Wilson, bassist Tyrone Allen II, and drummer Adam Arruda – the record is a vibrant collection of ten original compositions inspired by George’s interest in music of the African diaspora. “Understanding” features a Cuban changüí-inspired groove. “Haiti” originates from one of George’s own looped electronic beats. Stevens contributes lyrics to the laid-back “Skylight” and the somewhat sorrowful “Happy Birthday,” as well as wordless vocals to three others. The music is unapologetically swinging and fully engaged, whether simmering on a low flame or reaching climactic heights of intensity.

It’s been three and a half years since the Haiti-born and Montreal-based dance producer Kaytranada released 99.9%, his lush, bubbly, and guest-heavy debut album. In the time since then, Kaytranada has released plenty of one-off singles and collaborations, but he hasn’t shown any interest in making another LP. 99.9% proved conclusively that Kaytranada’s whole style could work brilliantly at album length, so it’s great to learn that he’s got another new full-length coming out. We won’t have to wait long for it.

Kayo Dot – Plastic House on Base of Sky (2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

The core of Kayo Dot might be that mood one that lies at the crossroads of darkness and mystery. In film, music that accompanies mystery is often nocturnal, playing on a primal relation in our brains between the unknown and the night. Its this intersection that is the essence of Kayo Dot. Kayo Dot has never made the same record twice. From chamber music to progressive black metal, from goth to jazz and avant garde classical, Kayo Dot is experimental and often unclassifiable. Plastic House on Base of Sky is Kayo Dot s 7th full length since the bands inception in 2003 On Kayo Dots newest full length, Plastic House on Base of Sky, the band continues to embrace the electronic allusions found on their previous effort Coffins on Io. Plastic House on Base of Sky incorporates a variety of synthesizers (many of them vintage analog) to create another work of ambition and magnitude that fuses the explosive musical imagination of a band like Magma with the forward thinking experimentalism of Conrad Schnitzler or Morton Subotnick. This latest effort, a 40 minute long, 5 song album replaces the futurenoir theme of Coffins on Io with an innovative, complex, and biomechanical work of art. Think seemingly impossible architecture, dead satellites, trashed space stations, wasted old lady heroin addicts hanging out by cheap motel pools, broken people, and a hopeless dead and polluted world transitioning into artifice and mechanism and reacting by being self destructive, either to the point of utter obliteration or a glorious transhuman condition. Toby Driver, the primary composer and bandleader of Kayo Dot, has been fiercely productive over the years, and while that usually refers to how many songs or albums an artist has made, with Driver the productivity is in the realm of ideas as much as music itself. In the course of a single Kayo Dot song, the amount of risks and liberties taken with form and convention usually outnumbers what other artists cover in a full album. For as much ground as they cover, its always in the service of a carefully curated mood and this is apparent on Plastic House on Base of Skys exploration of our mechanical posthuman futurepresent.
