The War Requiem, Op. 66, is a large-scale, non-liturgical setting of the Requiem composed by Benjamin Britten mostly in 1961 and completed in January 1962. The War Requiem was performed for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, which was built after the original fourteenth-century structure was destroyed in a World War II bombing raid. The traditional Latin texts are interspersed, in telling juxtaposition, with settings of poems by Wilfred Owen, written in World War I. The work is scored for soprano, tenor and baritone soloists, chorus, boys’ choir, organ, and two orchestras (a full orchestra and a chamber orchestra). The chamber orchestra accompanies the intimate settings of the English poetry, while soprano, choirs and orchestra are used for the Latin sections; all forces are combined in the conclusion. The Requiem has a duration of approximately 90 minutes.

Setlist unabashedly plays favorites, and Lori Williams is by any measure near the top of the favorites list. This D.C. vocalist’s instrument contains the kind of nuances that one could get lost in. She has the kind of attenuation and subtlety that we associate with jazz singing instantly—a kind of jazz-vocal ‘discipline,’ for lack of a better term. But Williams slips in hints—and sometimes dead giveaways—that she has packed away the kind of soul power that would make her a tremendous R&B or gospel singer. Perhaps it’s a sort of vocalist’s twist on Ernest Hemingway’s “iceberg theory”: What you hear on the surface is only about 10 percent of what’s really there. As it happens, what is there is crystalline clarity, perhaps the most precise articulation of any singer in town, and a range that will, when she runs it, produce shivers. “She’s got a soft-edged, creamy voice that’s a natural vehicle for introspection, but also one that you could happily curl up and get lost in. It’s stunning, supple subtle, sumptuous, soulful music – let’s call that the five Ss of Lori Williams, shall we?”

Lori McKenna is quite something. Her influence in country folk is not to be taken lightly. Nominated several times for a Grammy Award, she became the first songwriter of the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2017. It’s not a senseless victory for McKenna, especially with this eleventh album The Tree, whose tone is rather feminist. Lori McKenna once again teams up with producer Dave Cobb. He had already helped her with her previous album, The Bird And The Rifle, which had won three Grammys. After all this time, McKenna has faced many changes. She is not this young woman who wrote texts and sung in small venues anymore. She has become a wife and a mother. The Tree is therefore a window on family life, the first love declarations and the importance of family. It’s not surprising then that her son, Christopher McKenna, takes part in the album by playing the mellotron… McKenna doesn’t make use of useless flourish or overrated coloraturas. She settles for simplicity and her love for country music, which is very present in the riffs of Young And Angry Again. A tender relationship is almost established here. Like with a rather wise woman, who tries to confess her life and that we listen to attentively. She highlights with A Mother Never Rests or You Can’t Break a Woman a rather melancholic and intense side that she manages to contrast with the dynamism of You Can’t Break a Woman. – Anna Coluthe

The American music icon’s 50th studio album (excluding her 10 studio duet collaborations with Conway Twitty), Still Woman Enough celebrates women in country music. From her homage to the originators, Mother Maybelle Carter and the Carter Family (via her cover of “Keep On The Sunny Side”) through a new interpretation of her very first single, “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl,” Loretta Lynn acknowledges her role in the continuum of American country music with a special collaboration with Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood (“Still Woman Enough”), and duets with Margo Price (“One’s On The Way”) and Tanya Tucker (“You Ain’t Woman Enough”), sharing the musical torch with some of the brightest lights and biggest stars in contemporary country music. The album premieres 13 new Loretta Lynn recordings, intimate and electrifying performances of a career-spanning selection of songs illuminating different aspects of her repertoire. The collection is centred around Loretta’s original compositions – from new songs like “Still Woman Enough” (which shares its title and attitude with her 2002 autobiography and was cowritten with her daughter, Patsy Lynn Russell) through fresh interpretations of classics including “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl” (her first single, originally released March 1960), “You Ain’t Woman Enough” (the title track for her first #1 Billboard Hot Country Album in 1966), “My Love” (from 1968’s Here’s Loretta Lynn), “I Wanna Be Free” (1971) and a deeply emotional “Coal Miner’s Daughter Recitation,” commemorating the 50th anniversary of the release of her signature song (October 5, 1970) and album (January 4, 1971).

This is the second album from Lorenzo Nardocci Trio: awesome!
It includes six new compositions developed during the last year through great interplay with Andreas and Terje. Themes are based on life´s everyday moments and on important people in my life: This is, in fact, the essence of the album title Secondo Me (According to me). That is also the way the album opens: Secondo Me is a light C-major melody on a sweet samba, a reflection on how much I love life, music, and this beautiful instrument with its endless sounds and expressions.

Lorenzo Naccarato is back, with his trio. His second opus, “Nova Rupta”, is worthy of the promises that had been raised by the first, in 2016. Better, the whole has matured. In cohesion. Without giving up an iota of what was already his power of seduction. Namely, it immediately devastates the listener. Take him on a dreamlike journey. An enchanted world – and enchanting. A music in movement. Kinetic, or kinematic.

The Monteverdi contemporary Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) is now unfortunately almost exclusively seen as an important and influential composer of works for keyboard instruments, but he also composed both sacred and secular vocal music throughout his entire creative period. The Italian Lorenzo Ghielmi and his ensemble La Divina Armonia show in their recording with PASSACAILLE that sacred vocal music is no less important and in connection with his organ works even results in a particularly charming program. La Divina Armonia was founded by Lorenzo Ghielmi in 2005. All the musicians involved in the Italian group have distinguished themselves for many years in the performance of Baroque music as soloists and musicians in several of the most renowned ensembles in this field. In La Divina Armonia theyre coming together to play music from the Baroque up to the early Classical period, playing extraordinarily vividly, but in a beautifully cantabile manner at the same time.

In the German village of Rysum, in East Frisia, a precious instrument is preserved: an ancient organ, built in 1442/1513, which still has most of the original pipes. Lorenzo Ghielmi and the vocal ensemble Biscantores present a sort of “organ Mass”, where organ pieces and liturgical chant alternate according to the practice of the time. A journey between the late Middle Ages and the dawn of the Renaissance – this is how you could describe this musical programme, set up in collaboration with the musicologist Konrad Küster, which perfectly illustrates the unique sounds of this instrument.

With its recording of Handel organ concertos Op.4 (PAS944), the ensemble La Divina Armonia under Lorenzo Ghielmi impressively demonstrated that they can add new tunes to well-known standard repertoire, which requires interpretative taste, superior technology and exceptional natural musicality. The musicians prove that they have all of this in abundance with their recording of three Bach concertos which experienced a makeover by the performers, without distorting the works.
