This album from the pianist Luis Fernando Pérez (a student of Dimitri Bashkirov, Alicia de Larrocha and Pierre-Laurent Aimard) includes the entirety of the Cançons i Danses, or at least the ones intended for piano. Mompou composed fifteen of them, of which the thirteenth is for guitar and the fifteenth is for organ. The composition dates of these works range from 1921 to 1961 for the first twelve, while the fourteenth dates from 1978, created at the Lincoln Center in New York for the composer’s 85th birthday.Scènes d ́enfants, one of the jewels from his catalog, and one of his most renowned works, was created between 1915 and 1918, in other words at the start of his creative years. Although “Iberianising”, if you forgive our use of this term, Mompou didn’t like to be referred to as a nationalist composer, preferring the term regionalist. “Not really knowing the true style of my music,” he said, “I’ve been classified as an exclusively folkloric composer, against which I had to express my disapprobation many times. My only arrogance is to believe that I managed to create an ethnic sounding music, without falling into the trap and excess of popular themes.” Luis Fernando Pérez is a regular of prestigious festivals such as Schleswig-Holstein, La Roque d’Anthéron, Richter in La Grange de Meslay, Jacobins in Toulouse, Santander and Granada, the Musical Fortnight in Donosti and Musika-Musica of Bilbao. He has been a soloist for the Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona and National of Catalonia, Real Filharmonía of Galicia, Symphony of Bilbao, Symphony of the Principality of Asturias, Orchestral Ensemble of Paris and Kanazawa, Symphony Warsaw, Symphony of Euskadi, the RTVE Symphony, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra of Budapest and the Mannheim Chamber Orchestra, and also the National Orchestra of Spain.

‘This music is silent because its audition is internal… Its emotion is secret and does only take a sound shape in its resonances under the huge cold dome of our solitud’. Federico Mompou described this way in his admission speech to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Saint George not only the profound significance of his work titled Silent Music, but also his essential values and the sensitive attitude of both interpreter and listener to submerge in the asceticism that its course proposes. A description which is in line with the author of the verses that stimulated so much sound beauty, the most illustrious of our mystics, Saint John of the Cross, who, in the Prologue to his The Spiritual Canticle, names the explicit music in his verses: silent, because it is calm and peaceful intelligence. Although each book of Mompou s Silent Music is composed on different tempi, the work possesses a united structure; the configuration in four books only responds to its chronological order of composition and not to a formal organization previously designed. Luis Aracama is considered by critics to be one of the most outstanding and eclectic Spanish pianists of his generation. The versatile musician is founder and artistic director of the Festival of Contemporary Music of Ponferrada, and his interest in the music of our time has led him to premiere works of various modern composers, many of which have been written specifically for him.

A musical portrait of a master guitar-maker of the 19th century.
Great instruments have always been associated with great musicians, and this is true in the guitar world too, at least from the early 19th century onwards. Early in his career, Antonio de Torres (1817-1892), like other luthiers before him, found a performer ideally suited to his instruments – the young Andalusian guitarist Julián Arcas. He then relocated to Los Angeles, enrolled in the Scoring for Motion Picture and Television program at the University of Southern California, and soon found work as an assistant to film composer Theodore Shapiro (Old School, Tropic Thunder, St. Vincent), who shared Göransson’s penchant for comedy. After earning some credits on film shorts and in television, the young composer got his breakthrough assignment in 2009 on what would become the long-running sitcom Community, which led to concurrent work on New Girl and Happy Endings, among other TV series. During his time on Community, he also found work on feature films including the comedy We’re the Millers and the biopic Fruitvale Station, both released in 2013.

The official soundtrack to Marvel’s upcoming superhero blockbuster Black Panther has been announced. The original motion picture soundtrack arrives February 16, and was recorded in London with “a 132-piece western classical orchestra, African percussionists and a 40-person choir.” The score was penned by composer and longtime Childish Gambino producer Ludwig Göransson, who previously worked with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler on the films Creed and Fruitvale Station. Kendrick Lamar spearheaded the recent star-studded compilation Black Panther The Album, assembled as a companion piece to the movie.
