Robin Schlochtermeier is an Anglo-German composer who has written the music for several award-winning broadcast documentaries and features. Classically trained, his music often combines organic sound design elements (and occasionally synthesis) with more traditional instrumentation (piano, orchestra).
Most recently Robin composed the music for ‘The Spy Who Fell to Earth’, an international espionage documentary which was released on Netflix worldwide in 2019. Robin, among others, also scored ‘Virgin Queen’s Fatal Affair’ (Best Specialist Factual – Royal Television Society Awards), the features ‘Queens of Syria’ (Black Pearl Award – Abu Dhabi Film Festival), ‘Retreat’ (Premiere at Screenplay Shetland Festival, curated by UK film critic Mark Kermode), ‘Oh No, Not Rudy Again!’ (Cannes film festival 2015), and ‘Strings’ (British Independent Film Award).

Charles Dollé is not an anonymous composer since we know his name and works signed by him. Nevertheless, he remained in anonymity during his own time and until today, where very few records are devoted to him. Edited in 1737 and dedicated to the Prince of Carignan, famous patron appointed intendant of the Menus Plaisirs by Louis XV, the pieces for bass viol with continuo by Charles Dollé are among the last of its kind.
The facts of not belonging to one of the, through generations at the royal music employed, families and the non-achievement of a position at the court might be an answer why today so less is known about Charles Dollé. He remains mysterious, but his music, thanks to his publications transmitted, shows his musical talent and ability as a performer.

Being only the tenth show, Upper Darby 12/9/95 captures a seminal Joad performance in unadulterated form, showcasing his acoustic-guitar playing and evocative storytelling. In 1575 / 77 Venice was hit by an unusually violent plague epidemic that killed a third of the population. In order to avert the plague, construction of the Chiesa del Redentore began as early as 1575. At the inauguration of this church and at later services, music was performed by the best composers of the city. Some of these works can be heard here by the outstanding singers and instrumentalists of the ensemble Concerto Palatino, including Hana Blaziková, Alex Potter and Veronika Skuplik, conducted by Bruce Dickey.

In the most enigmatic project up to this point in his career, Brad Mehldau explores conflicting aesthetics, sometimes in tracks positioned next to each other, and occasionally within the confines of a single performance. A spare simplicity governs much of the album, emphasized by almost puritanical horn arrangements — long notes, mournful triadic chords. After acknowledging these episodes with childlike figurations on the piano, Mehldau then builds his solos along more dissonant lines, which invariably end up enhancing the mood. But then there are tracks like “Dropjes,” whose electronic effects gnash angrily at the piano, or “Free Willy,” on which putty attached to the instrument’s low strings allows Mehldau to unleash a feral improvisation, with lines that suggest scurrying rodents more than bebop blowing. Producer Jon Brion stimulated much of this adventurism, at times diving directly into the mix with his guitar synth or Chamberlin keyboard. But what intrigues most about Largo in the end is the perspective it offers on Mehldau, whose playing here is, as always, intelligent, perhaps a bit cerebral, and now open as well to sonic exotica. – Robert L.
