Calcutta 1789, the latest album by Notturna, is a fascinating portrait of 18th century musical life in India during the British colonial period. Under the direction of Christopher Palameta, the program combines traditional Indian music with works by Purcell, Handel, J.C. Bach, and other European composers. Notturna’s period instrumentalists are joined by the voluptuous sounds of the sitar, played by Uwe Neumann, and the tabla, played by Shawn Mativetsky.

Inspired by a 1789 concert program discovered in the archives of Calcutta, the recording reconstructs the rich cultural exchange that developed between Indian and English musicians who were brought to India as part of The British East India Company’s entourage.

The Keyboard sonata in G Major HobXVl:8 is one of Haydn’s most famous works for keyboard music. lt was written around 1766 and is characterized by its freshness and lightness, typical of the keyboard music of the time. The work consists of tour movements: an allegro, a minuet, an andante, and a final allegro. The first movement, in an allegro tempo, opens with a lively and playful theme which alternates with a series of more delicate and suspended episodes. The second movement, in minuet time, is characterized by a sweet and cantabile melody that winds its way over a soft and delicate harmonic accompaniment. The third movement is a very singable and short andante that leads to a brilliant and amusing fourth and final movement: the latter has very interesting hints, which characterize Haydn’s style and his era; lor example, the use of triplets and grace notes.

Forget the album cover, which looks like homemade artwork on a CD handed out by a desperate artist patrolling the boardwalks in Venice Beach. Get Rollin’ continues the back-to-basics approach Nickelback started with 2017’s Feed the Machine, stripping away anything that doesn’t contribute to their heavy-footed wallop. All power chords and thick backbeats, traits that are still evident in the power ballads, Get Rollin’ hardly sounds modern but Nickelback have been around the block enough times to not even attempt to hide their advancing age: they not only indulge in wistful nostalgia for “Those Days,” they call one of their songs “Skinny Little Missy” as if they were grandpas. Being comfortable in their own skin suits Nickelback, though. They’re more likely to wind their way around a sunny, irrepressible hook like they do on “High Time,” a good-time weed anthem that’s their catchiest pop tune ever, and they also polish “Tidal Wave” with spacy, retro ’80s affectations that actually suit Chad Kroeger’s surging melody. Now that they’re veterans, Nickelback don’t try so hard to be heavy, nor do they indulge in their tasteless side: they’re craftsmen who know how to deliver the goods, which — on its own terms — Get Rollin’ certainly does.

‘Rovanio’ from Brazilian vocalist, percussionist, and guitarist Nanny Assis is a remarkable kaleidoscope of styles, textures, ideas, and even languages, yet it never strays from the distinctive Brazilian elements that form the foundation of Assis’s music.

No less than 20 artists appear across Rovanio’s ten tracks.

Including bassist Ron Carter, guitarist Chico Pinheiro, trumpeter Randy Brecker, pianist Fred Hersch, saxophonists John Ellis, Igor Butman, and Lakecia Benjamin; and vocalists Janis Siegel, Vinicius Cantu?ria and Emanuel Yerday.

By 2020, Nanny Assis had 40 years as a performing musician under his belt.

His esteem as a bossa/jazz vocalist, percussionist, and guitarist was well established, but for the Bahia native (now based in New York and South Florida) that was only part of the story.

“Coming from Brazil, I have so many different styles and roots for my music,” he says.

“It’s very rich – I wanted to present an album that would show the real me.”

“It should really be called The Music of Nanny Assis and Friends,” he says.

The album also includes one standard, “Manh? de Carnaval”.

“The other tracks are all collaborations: I partnered with somebody to do either words or music.” In addition, Assis and guitarist Chico Pinheiro together arranged every tune but one.

For some decades in the middle of the twentieth century, Paul Creston (1906–85) was one of the most frequently performed of American composers, though his music has sunk from prominence in recent years. He was himself a fearsome pianist, and his Three Narratives are Lisztian concert essays that require freewheeling virtuosity. Rhythmicon is a ten-volume collection of 123 brief studies that examine various aspects of rhythm. Their difficulty grows as the series progresses, reaching its zenith in Volumes 7–10, where Creston presents 25 studies that range in mood from serious to light-hearted, from hymn-like introspection and calm to jagged, Bartokian energy.

Since her fantastic 2016 EP, N15, British Algerian singer-songwriter Miraa May has been a lesser-known but essential part of UK pop. Her debut album arrives at 17 songs long, an ambitious feat that she just about pulls off, with polished instrumentation, unapologetic candour and a cavalry of superb features from British female artists, including Jorja Smith and Raye.

Drawing on the contemporary, playing with sounds from two decades ago (interpolations of songs by Mya, 50 Cent and Sisqo feel more inventive than the recent trend of sampling from that era), as well as flourishes of Algerian Arabic, the record aims for a wide-ranging sonic palette. Though the vocal production is sometimes a little overwrought, May is engaging, and unafraid to look inwards – at her romantic life, her mental health, her newborn son.

A monumental innovator, icon, and maverick, trumpeter Miles Davis helped define the course of jazz as well as popular culture in the 20th century, bridging the gap between bebop, modal music, funk, and fusion. Throughout most of his 50-year career, Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. It was a style that, along with his brooding stage persona, earned him the nickname “Prince of Darkness.” However, Davis proved to be a dazzlingly protean artist, moving into fiery modal jazz in the ’60s and electrified funk and fusion in the ’70s, drenching his trumpet in wah-wah pedal effects along the way. More than any other figure in jazz, Davis helped establish the direction of the genre with a steady stream of boundary-pushing recordings, among them 1957’s chamber jazz album Birth of the Cool (which collected recordings from 1949-1950), 1959’s modal masterpiece Kind of Blue, 1960’s orchestral album Sketches of Spain, and 1970’s landmark fusion recording Bitches Brew. Davis’ own playing was obviously at the forefront of those changes, but he also distinguished himself as a bandleader, regularly surrounding himself with sidemen and collaborators who likewise moved in new directions, including the luminaries John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, and many more. While he remains one of the most referenced figures in jazz, a major touchstone for generations of trumpeters (including Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, and Nicholas Payton), his music reaches far beyond the jazz tradition, and can be heard in the genre-bending approach of performers across the musical spectrum, ranging from funk and pop to rock, electronica, hip-hop, and more.
