That’s a hell of a list. With such famous friends, Sheryl Crow has turned Threads into an incredibly impressive collaborative album. The 5-star casting is wonderfully eclectic. From Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones to Public Enemy’s Chuck D., Willie Nelson, St. Vincent, Sting, Emmylou Harris, Lucius, Mavis Staples, Stevie Nicks, James Taylor, Jason Isbell and even her ex, Eric Clapton, the American singer crosses over stylistic and generational boundaries, highlighting her own colourful musical identity. Over the course of her ten previous albums, Sheryl Crow has slalomed between rock’n’roll, pop, country, blues and soul, never settling down in one genre. Such is the case again on Threads, even if the general atmosphere remains rooted in a rather classical rock’n’roll. When she topped the charts in the early 90s, this classicism already stood out next to her contemporaries such as Nirvana, Beck and The Smashing Pumpkins… Crow composed the bulk of the songs on this record, as well as adding some exceptionally tasty covers to the mix (George Harrison’s Beware of Darkness, Bob Dylan’s Everything is Broken, The Worst by the Rolling Stones, Kris Kristofferson’s Border Lord). Her prose on this record is more introspective than ever, taking on an almost confessional tone. Perhaps something to do with her recent shocking statement: Threads will be her last record! Sebastian Noack, Manuel Lange – Hans Sommer: Ballads & Romances (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Almost an exact contemporary of Saint-Saëns, Hans Sommer partly faced the same dilemma as the great Camille: born in 1837, in the heart of the Romantic period, he passed away in 1922 and saw many evolutions, even revolutions, pass him by without taking part. He was part of the circles of Richard Strauss (who even conducted one of his operas in Weimar in 1892) and some of his younger colleagues, but never approached the language – even the least avant-garde – of a Schoenberg for instance, including in his later works. A late romantic, fascinated with modern forms but still attached to tone, harmony and strong architecture, he got into music rather late in life, following a first career as a mathematician, physician and naturalist. He authored ten operas and most importantly an imposing repertoire of Lieder in line with the works of Wagner, Schumann, Liszt and the first Strauss, written for the most part before the 1900s. Baritone Sebastian Noack performs a nice range of Sommer’s creations in this field that he so masterfully explored.

This is Shellac’s sixth album, composed of sessions recorded for John Peel in 1994 & 2004. Duration: 01:02:03. 2LP is on 180g vinyl and incudes a CD of the full album. Both the 2xLP and the 2xCD version are packaged in a top-load single pocket wide-spine jacket with two printed inner sleeves. Audio quality is paramount, as always, with Shellac. The LP was mastered by Chicago Mastering Service. The vinyl is manufactured at RTI in Camarillo, CA. The pressings are 180 gram audiophile quality. Other than the informational sheet you hold in your hand (or virtual hand), this record will have no formal promotion. There will be no advertisements, no press or radio promotion, no promotional or review copies, no promotional gimmick items, and otherwise no free lunch. Photos of the band are available.
