“Hot Thoughts” is the bravest, most sonically inventive work of Spoon’s career. With all due respect to earlier efforts that have made the quintet both critically acclaimed and a commercial contender, preconceptions about this band are about to be obliterated. That’s not to say “Hot Thoughts” doesn’t have a requisite supply of infectious earworms but there’s a lyrical bent that’s as carnal as it’s crafty, and a newfound sense of sonic exploration that results in the genresmasher Spoon have flirted with in the past but not fully consummated.

On her sophomore album as Squirrel Flower, Boston native Ella O’Connor Williams leans into a sprawl of emotional chaos, dispatching demons and riding out the storm with a mercurial sense of curiosity. As a toponym, Planet (i) refers to a combination of spirit and place; that of her own self as well as the world at large. Themes of personal, meteorological, and environmental disaster scud like silver clouds over the album’s panoramic arrangements in a tenuous, but pleasingly textural way. Recorded in the U.K. by producer Ari Chant (PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius), Williams’ already melancholic indie rock takes on some of the hazy grit that hangs like an aural patina over Bristol’s legendary music scene. Where her 2020 debut seemed almost celestial in its moodiness, Planet (i) is rooted and decidedly earthbound. The thrilling “Hurt a Fly” ripples with electricity and light while songs like “Roadkill” and the sprawling “Night” are all gravity as if wrought from deep mineral deposits and stone. A number of the tracks, though, are quite gentle, bearing a woolen sadness that is quite affecting. “I saw a hummingbird face down in the water,” sings Williams in an airy half-whisper, imbuing the lovely “Deluge in the South” with heartbreaking imagery. The sparse “Desert Wildflowers,” on the other hand, is quietly defiant in its eerie uplift. Like Squirrel Flower’s debut, Planet (i) is a journey through an ever-changing landscape and marks a noticeable creative step forward for Williams. – Timothy Monger

At last the debut album from Squid and it’s everything you wished for and more. Bright Green Field is produced by Dan Carey and released via Warp Records. It’s an album of towering scope and ambition, it is deeply considered, paced and intricately constructed. With all band members playing such a vital and equal role, this album is very much the product of five heads operating as one. Some bands might be tempted to include previous singles on their debut – and the band already released two more in 2020 via ‘Sludge’ and ‘Broadcaster’ – but instead Bright Green Field is completely new. Welcome back to the world of Squeeze, a world where previous visitors will find much that is both reassuringly familiar and intriguingly different. A new album, ‘The Knowledge’, offers up another dozen examples of high quality Chris Difford & Glenn Tilbrook song craft, and is the perfect curtain-raiser for a massive UK, US & Australian tour. Two years on from the critically acclaimed Top 20 success of ‘Cradle To The Grave’ (the band’s first set of new songs this century), ‘The Knowledge’ sees our heroes broaden their musical canvas, as evident on the opening ‘Innocence In Paradise’ with its pedal steel and cinematic atmosphere evoking images of the mythical western. But don’t be wrong-footed by that curveball compass point, because Squeeze are still very much part of the fabric of South London.
Their hometown heritage, such an integral part of the group’s DNA since seventies hits like ‘Up The Junction’, ‘Cool For Cats’ and ‘Slap And Tickle’, flows through the album as resolutely as the mighty majestic Thames. Greenwich’s own Maryon Wilson Park is name-checked in the chorus of the softly shuffling ‘Patchouli’, while ‘Every Story’ is a heartfelt poem to the people and places that shaped their upbringing.
After their resurgence in 2015 with UK Top 20 and critically acclaimed album Cradle To The Grave, the first Squeeze album of new songs since 1998, Squeeze went on to play the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 2016, solidifying themselves as one of the UK’s best live acts.

Argybargy is the third album by British pop/new wave band Squeeze. Argybargy was released in February 1980 peaking at 32 in the UK Albums Chart spending 15 weeks in that listing. It would be the last album featuring founding member Jools Holland until Squeezes first reunion album 1985s Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti. Squeeze came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s and continued recording successfully in the 1980s and 1990s. Though not as commercially successful in the United States Squeeze had American chart hits and have a dedicated following there and continue to attract new fans. All of Squeezes hits were written by band members Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook with the former penning the lyrics and the latter handling the composition. The duo were hailed as the heirs to Lennon and McCartneys throne during their peak of popularity in the early 1980s.

This complete edition has been remastered from the original DATs and features two extra tracks which were first released on the B-side of the Squarepusher Plays… EP and later featured on the original Japanese release of this album. The edition also includes a 16 page booklet with personal photographs, ephemera and candid notes from Tom Jenkinson, throwing light on the early days of his career.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Spoon classic, Merge will release a deluxe limited-edition version of Gimme Fiction on double-LP (180g) and double-CD. The reissue contains the album remastered by Howie Weinberg from the original tapes, a second disc with 12 previously unreleased demos from the era, nine additional bonus tracks via digital download, and a full-color book containing photos and an extensive oral history of the making of the album. The deluxe LP package will also include a 24” x 36” poster.
Gimme Fiction dragged the sonic pointillism of Kill the Moonlight further into dub-influenced weirdness as the increasingly confident Spoon went crazy in the studio, experimenting with everything from warped hip-hop samples to horse whinnies. How all this directionless Dylan worship and psychedelic goofing resulted in an album as sharply realized as Gimme Fiction is a testament solely to Spoon’s self-assurance and tastefulness (and some hard work, and a bit of luck, etc.). Whatever digging or strange alchemy had to go into it, they only produced more gold.
Gimme Fiction deserves special recognition because it’s the album where Spoon—backed into a corner—took some crazy leaps, all of them forward. It’s a “departure point” for a band that, lucky for us, has never made a real departure. And when it came time for a reissue, we knew it deserved a lasting place on vinyl, right alongside every other indispensable record in Spoon’s discography.
