Hayden is a staple of the library for many music lovers. Franz Bruggen and his Orchestra of the 18th Century give us what is just a terrific performance of Franz Josef Haydn’s best symphonies. These performances are wonderfully stylish, full of fine neuance, bold, and boyant. Bruggen seems to let Hayden do the playing, unfolding many musical surprises which other big bands seem to miss. Like the performance, the sound engineering is very good, especially important because of Bruggen’s interpretation. That is what makes these performances outstanding.

or FLAC 2.0 (converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/48 kHz | Front/Rear Covers | 796 MB

Rock-solid work from One For All, easily one of the greatest straight jazz combos going, thanks to some tremendous tenor work from Eric Alexander, sweet piano work from David Hazeltine, and snapping rhythms from drummer Joe Farnsworth. The sextet also features Jim Rotondi on trumpet, Steve Davis on trombone, and John Webber on bass, all working here at the height of their powers, and also coming across with a bit more sharpness and soul than even other recent sessions on the Venus label. Arrangements are by all members of the group; the tunes are long and roll out beautifully with a solidly soulful feel — no surprise, given that most of them are covers of classic soul tunes from the ’70s.

The Afflatus Quartet/Quintet has been in the music scene since 1995. Afflatus Quartet derives from Afflatus Quintet, the winner of the International Music Competition of the ARD Munich 1997 which is one of the most prestigious competitions of chamber music in the world. With Radek Baborák, the world-famous horn player and Afflatus member, taking “vacation” from the ensemble, the four members, each the splendid musician active in Europe, especially in Czech Republic, make the best possible unity with the woodwind quartet ensemble. Their second album features classical repertoire by Beethoven and Mozart. All of them are arrangements, but the distinguished ensemble members of Afflatus create sound rich and full of variety of colors, like an organic instrument made of four musicians, with celestial, beautiful sound for “Classical”.

In fashion circles, the adjective “bespoke” denotes custom-made suits and shirts and signifies the person who designs and constructs them. On The Bespoke Man’s Narrative, pianist Aaron Diehl extrapolates this notion to matters of musical invention. The five originals and five arrangements comprising the programme were chosen specifically for Diehl’s quartet of young all-stars: vibraphonist Warren Wolf, bassist David Wong and drummer Rodney Green.

Oliver Nelson – The Blues And The Abstract Truth (1961) [Japanese Limited SHM-SACD 2011] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

As Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger, he is lesser known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. Blues and the Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic “Stolen Moments,” but on this recording, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to form an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section. “Stolen Moments” really needs no comments, as its undisputable beauty shines through in a three-part horn harmony fronting Hubbard’s lead melody. It’s a thing of beauty that is more timeless as the years pass. The “Blues” aspect is best heard on “Yearnin’,” a stylish, swinging, and swaying downhearted piece that is a bluesy as Evans would ever be. Both “Blues” and “Abstract Truth” combine for the darker “Teenie’s Blues,” a feature for Nelson and Dolphy’s alto saxes, Dolphy assertive in stepping forth with his distinctive, angular, dramatic, fractured, brittle voice that marks him a maverick. Then there’s “Hoedown,” which has always been the black sheep of this collection with its country flavor and stereo separated upper and lower horn in snappy call-and-response barking. As surging and searing hard boppers respectively, “Cascades” and “Butch & Butch” again remind you of the era of the early ’60s when this music was king, and why Hubbard was so revered as a young master of the idiom. A must buy for all jazz fans, and a Top Ten or Top Fifty favorite for many.
