Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab # UDSACD 2018 | Genre: Jazz

Despite the title and the cover of this reissue (which makes it appear that the performances are greatly influenced by music of the Far East), the style played by guitarist Pat Martino’s quartet is very much in the hard bop tradition. Martino was already developing his own sound and is in excellent form with pianist Eddie Green, drummer Lenny McBrowne, and either Ben Tucker or Tyrone Brown on bass during two group originals, Benny Golson’s “Park Avenue Petite,” John Coltrane’s “Lazy Bird,” and the standard “Close Your Eyes.” It’s a good example of Pat Martino’s playing in his early period.

It appears that, with Linn’s The Devil’s Trill, the former Palladian Ensemble shortened its name to just Palladians. With the departure of longtime recorder soloist Pamela Thorby, the quartet was suddenly re-designated a trio, but The Devil’s Trill finds it a quartet once again with the addition of harpsichordist Silas Standage. The new name, according to the group, is designed “[to allow] more artistic freedom for players to come and go as required,” and that’s certainly fair, although one might wonder what effect this might have on their usual, seamless ensemble blend. To judge from The Devil’s Trill, not much, so far. The core group of Rodolfo Richter, Susanne Heinrich, and William Carter hold together like glue, and the addition of Standage discreetly adds a level of color to what was already well put in place with the Palladian Ensemble of old.

Paolo Giacometti – Schumann: Piano Works (2009) MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

By late summer of 1837, the 27-year-old Schumann was secretly engaged to his beloved Clara Wieck. The powerful emotions connected with this event were a stimulus to Schumann’s creative impulses, for he was a Romantic through & through. It was at this time that he composed the deeply personal Davidsbundlertanze -18 dances inspired by the imaginary league of David. This fellowship, invented by Schumann, consisted of Schumann’s own alter egos, plus a number of well-respected musicians & friends including Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The group was established as a way of fighting against the Philistines; it was Schumann’s response to contemporary musical trends which he saw as cheap, excessively virtuosic, & superficial.

Rachel Podger, Pavlo Beznosiuk – Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante; Haydn: Violin Concerti 1 & 4 (2009) MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Rachel Podger, Pavlo Beznosiuk – Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante; Haydn: Violin Concerti 1 & 4 (2009)
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & DST64 5.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Digital Booklet | 3.61GB
FLAC 2.0 Stereo (converted with foobar2000) 24bit/88.2 kHz | Digital Booklet | 1.15GB

Two rarely recorded Haydn violin concertos frame Rachel Podger’s performance of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat on this disc. Both concertos have only string accompaniment, here provided by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and a discreet harpsichord (the player’s name unaccountably omitted from the list of the orchestra personnel in the accompanying booklet). Rachel Podger has chosen to play both concertos on her own Pesarinius violin (1739) that she feels is most suited to the style of these works and few would disagree with her choice. Her agile and spirited playing in the outer movements is complemented by her pure cantilena in the slow movements. As is to be expected, both works are full of baroque idioms and, while neither presents Haydn at his most inventive, they make an enjoyable pairing. The C major concerto is the more interesting of the two with a beautiful slow movement in which Podger’s rapt playing over pizzicato strings is a pleasure to hear.

Poco – Pickin’ Up The Pieces (1969) [Audio Fidelity 2013] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Poco dealt with a lot during the recording of their debut album – the sudden departure of bassist Randy Meisner, the frustration of working with an engineer who didn’t quite get what they were trying for, and a lot of pressure to deliver a solid collection of country-rock songs – and came up with this startlingly great record, as accomplished as any of Buffalo Springfield’s releases, and also reminiscent of the Beatles and the Byrds. Pickin’ Up the Pieces is all the more amazing when one considers that Jim Messina and George Grantham were both covering for the departed Meisner in hastily learned capacities on bass and vocals, respectively. The title track is practically an anthem for the virtues of country-rock, with the kind of sweet harmonizing and tight interplay between the guitars that the Byrds, the Burritos, and others had to work awhile to achieve. The mix of good-time songs (“Consequently So Long,” “Calico Lady”), fast-paced instrumentals (“Grand Junction”), and overall rosy feelings makes this a great introduction to the band, as well as a landmark in country-rock only slightly less important (but arguably more enjoyable than) Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

2LP on 1SACD | Features Stereo and Quadrophonic Surround Sound | Label: Vocalion # CDSML 8543

Dating from 1974, this 2-on-1 from country rock’s most under-appreciated band followed the departure of founder Richie Furay, Poco by this point dominated by Paul Cotton. Both albums – Vocalion has chosen not to put them in chronological order – were filled with a mix of hard-driving rockers and wistful ballads, the best moments belonging to Timothy B Schmit, who would soon leave to join The Eagles. This SACD offers the original quadraphonic mix as well as stereo, and the 4-channel format’s spatial oddities are less intrusive than one might imagine. A welcome reissue, especially given the 44-year gap since the quad mix was available.
