Graham Nash – Songs For Beginners (2008) [DVD-Audio ISO]

Graham Nash – Songs For Beginners
Artist: Graham Nash | Album: Songs For Beginners | Style: Rock | Year: 2008 [1971 original] | Quality: DVD-Audio (MLP 5.1 48kHz/24Bit, MLP 2.0 48kHz/24Bit, DTS 5.1, Dolby AC3 5.1, Dolby AC3 2.0) | Bitrate: lossless | Tracks: 11 | Size: ~3.59 Gb | Recovery: 3% | Release: Rhino Records (R2 352572), 2008 | Note: Not Watermarked

Songs for Beginners is Graham Nash’s solo debut apart from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Released in 1971, it is a collection of songs that reflect change, transition, and starting over. The set was recorded in both Los Angeles and San Francisco, in the immediate aftermath of Nash’s traumatic breakup with Joni Mitchell. Unlike the colorful dynamism of Stephen Stills’ eponymous debut recording, or the acid-drenched cosmic cowboy spaciness of David Crosby’s If I Could Only Remember My Name, Nash’s album is by contrast a much more humble and direct offering. It is a true, mostly introspective songwriter’s album full of beautifully performed and wonderfully recorded songs that reflect transition, movement, the desire to look backward and forward simultaneously. Like the aforementioned offering, this one is star-studded in its choice of players and singers: Crosby, Chris Ethridge, Jerry Garcia, Rita Coolidge, Clydie King, Venetta Fields, Dave Mason, Neil Young (under the pseudonym “Joe Yankee”), David Lindley, Bobby Keys, Phil Lesh, Dallas Taylor, and drummer John Barbata reflect some of the personnel on this heady yet humble session. The album is bookended by two of Nash’s best-known tunes, the anthemic “Military Madness” that remains timeless in the 21st century, and “Chicago,” that doesn’t. That said, they are among the weakest songs here — which reveals what a solid collection it is. Unlike many recordings birthed from personal angst, Nash’s engages in no self pity; instead, he focuses on the craft of songwriting itself. Despite its personal darkness, “Better Days,” with its swirling piano and pronounced bassline, is also an actual paean to self-determination and perseverance, the logic being that there were better days in the past, so there must be better ones in the future as well. “I Used to Be a King,” with Garcia on a gorgeous pedal steel and Lesh on bass, is a direct, mature response to “King Midas in Reverse,” a song Nash wrote and recorded with the Hollies. “Simple Man,” with its sparse melody and strings and a fine backing vocal from Coolidge, was written on the afternoon of the breakup with Mitchell. The violin-cello backdrop to Nash’s piano is particularly effective and makes this one of his most memorable songs. The parlor room country waltz that commences “Man in the Mirror,” features Garcia’s steel, Young’s piano, ex-Flying Burrito Brother Ethridge, and drummer Barbata; it shifts keys, tempo, and feel about a third of the way in with a very long bridge that transforms the song’s sentiment as well. Ultimately, Songs for Beginners is the strongest of Nash’s solo efforts (outside of his work with Crosby).

Songs for Survivors is the first solo album in 15 years by Graham Nash. Nash is accompanied by a band of veteran West Coast musicians including Russ Kunkel (drums, percussion), Dan Dugmore (pedal steel, acoustic & electric guitars), and Victor Krauss (acoustic & electric bass). The recording experience, Graham explains, has been “one of the most rewarding of my life.”

Having played on hundreds of recordings, performed in numerous countries and written over 200 songs including, “Our House”, “Teach Your Children”, “On a Carousel”, “Wasted on the Way” and “Marrakesh Express”, Graham is one of the most durable musical figures to have emerged from the 1960s. As one of the founding members of the Hollies, Graham achieved international success as part of the British Invasion in the 60’s. Shortly after, he joined Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, who are now in their 30th year of recording and performing together. In May of 1997, Graham (along with Stephen Stills and David Crosby) was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his remarkable career. Nash recently finished a 2002 nationwide tour with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and plans to headline a run of solo dates this fall. (more…)

Elvis Presley – Elvis 30 # 1 Hits (2002) [DVD-Audio ISO]

Elvis Presley – Elvis 30 # 1 Hits
Artist: Elvis Presley | Album: Elvis 30 number 1 Hits | Style: Rock’n’Roll | Year: 2002 | Quality: DVD-Audio (MLP 5.1 96kHz/24Bit, MLP 2.0 96kHz/24Bit, Dolby AC3 5.1, Dolby AC3 2.0) | Bitrate: lossless | Tracks: 31 + 6 bonus | Size: ~5.21 Gb | Recovery: 5% | Release: RCA | BMG (RCA 07863 65053-9), 2002 | Note: Not Watermarked

RCA and the Elvis estate made no bones about their intention on replicating the blockbuster success of the Beatles’ The Beatles 1 with their own single-disc collection of number one hits — hence, the 2002 release of Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits. The idea of collecting all the number one hits is simple enough, but there are problems inherent with the concept, not the least of which is that RCA did this once before. Unlike the Beatles, who went through numerous changes in just seven years of recording, Elvis had nearly three times as many years’ worth of material and hits to choose from. Also, he hit on a number of different charts — not just pop, but also R&B, country, and adult contemporary. Furthermore, where almost all of the Beatles’ number one hits sampled at least part of their music, there are significant chunks of Elvis’ best material — including the visionary sides for Sun — that didn’t hit the top of the charts. All of this makes assembling a similar comprehensive sampler of Elvis’ biggest hits much more difficult, and it doesn’t help that RCA has decided not to have a rigid aesthetic and sample from different charts all over the world, resulting in a collection that feels more of a patchwork than it should, even if the bulk of the material is from the early ’60s; at least five songs feel like they should have been replaced with better, and better-known, sides. And, even if much of this material is exceedingly familiar, there also feels like there is a lot missing because, frankly, there is. No Sun singles and very little from his classic 1968 comeback or early-’70s hits like “Moody Blue,” not to mention sides that would showcase Elvis “the rocker” better than what’s here, which plays closer to Elvis the ’60s pop crooner than anything else. And, let’s face it, no matter what the packaging is, Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits can’t feel that new because of the veritable flood of Elvis collections RCA has issued since the King started having hits. This is a very good compilation, covering many of the basics, but it’s hardly close to the only Elvis disc you’ll ever need, and it’s not even that great of a starting place, since it lacks so much of his best material. (Also, even though this is one of the most carefully considered compilations of Elvis hits, it can’t help but feel a little shoddy since there are actually 31 number one hits here, with the addition of the JXL remix of “A Little Less Conversation” tacked onto the end.)

„Shadows – Songs of Nat King Cole“, has been an idea brewing in Hugh’s mind for a few years. Cole was one of the Jazz artists that Hugh’s mother often played in the family home and his music became part of the soundtrack of Hugh’s formative years before his mother’s untimely death when he was 7 years old. After having released and toured two self penned albums distinctly pop on Universal records, Hugh was invited to tour and record with French/Italian Jazz pianist and producer Eric Legnini. This experience of a working Jazz musician gave him the confidence to finally approach Nat King Cole’s repertoire. (more…)

Fourteen numbers from the heyday of swing, composed sometime between 1930 and 1945, played and sung time and time again in ballrooms, or on the radio to advertise biscuits or war bonds, were recorded by Ella Fitzgerald in completely new and personal interpretations in 1961.
Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie! is absolutely top notch as regards to musicality; perfect recording quality, superb accompaniment by a small ensemble, with room for improvisations; it offers a wonderful opportunity to discover something new in these evergreens. The songs of this recording conjure up bygone days, with listeners in the 21st century being offered a highly personal homage to one of the most successful periods in the 100-year history of jazz!

In June 1995, a virtually unknown group of Japanese musicians embarked on the monumental task of recording the complete sacred cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Almost eighteen years later, on 23rd February 2013, the Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki – by then household names in the international music world – reached their goal, as they finished recording the 55th disc in a series which in the meantime had met with overwhelming acclaim worldwide.
Made in conjunction with the final cantata recording, this film commemorates the occasion. Besides filmed performances of the three last cantatas – Gloria in excelsis Deo, BWV191, Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele, BWV69 and Freue dich, erlöste Schar, BWV30 – the film includes interviews with Masaaki Suzuki and key members of Bach Collegium Japan as well as behind-the-scenes footage. Faith Hill – Cry (2002) [DVD-AUDIO ISO]

Faith Hill – Cry
Artist: Faith Hill | Album: Cry | Style: Country, Blue grass | Year: 2002 | Quality: DVD-Audio (MPL 5.1 96kHz/24Bit, MPL 2.0 96kHz/24Bit, Dolby AC3 5.1, Dolby AC3 2.0, DTS 5.1) | Bitrate: lossless | Tracks: 14 | Size: 6.96 Gb | Recovery: 5% | Covers: in archive | Release: Warner Bros (9362-48001-9), 2002 | Note: Watermarked

Lavishly produced and packaged, Cry marks the continued ascent of Faith Hill from the lowlands of down-home authenticity to the heights of pop superstardom. Though plenty of Nashville A-team players back her up, the sound they churn out has almost nothing to do with country music. Riding a tide of massed synthesizer textures, sweeping orchestral strings, thundering drums, rock guitar licks, and melodramatic dynamics, Hill strives for the biggest possible gestures in her performance. The result is the kind of glitzy fireworks normally associated with Star Search or American Idol, in which the lyric takes a distant backseat to raw exhibitionism and only the most cursory nod is made toward country lyrical convention. (The nod is particularly schizoid in “This Is Me,” as Hill proclaims, “I try to love Jesus and myself…yeah, yeah.”) Beyond the general issue of taste, this approach raises twofold problems for Hill in particular, in that her established skills as a song interpreter are lost in all this sturm und drang and her voice, while undeniably powerful at its peak, doesn’t have the range that allows most singers in this style, from proto-diva Barbra Streisand to flameout icon Mariah Carey, to at least milk the material at some superficial level. With all this in mind, it may be significant that Tim McGraw, a guest on previous Hill albums, makes no appearance here. Perhaps there’s no room for country credibility, or even for a spouse, when one’s career trajectory is as hot as Hill’s. (more…)

Composers reflect their contemporary world, and today’s performers mirror ourtime. The three works on this album all have a high degree of intensity and a strong personal character, as tributes, visions, fantasies, interpretations. As musical reflections they have these qualities in common, but at the same time they are very different works composed by three distinct musical personalities. Passion. Perfection. Raw intensity. With these fundamentals, the chamber orchestra TrondheimSolistene is carving out its own musical images in immersive audio.

Michael Schenker, one of music’s greatest rock guitarists, will release Michael Schenker Fest “Live” Tokyo – a stunning new live recording and filmed concert released by inakustik on Blu-ray (and 2CD, 2CD+DVD Combo, and LP). The Blu-ray release will be available for purchase on March 24, 2017

Filmed and recorded at Tokyo’s International Forum on August 24, 2016, this historic concert features guest appearances from some of the greatest rock vocalists who have worked with Schenker over the years including M.S.G.’S Gary Barden, Graham Bonnet, and Robin McAuley of the McAuley Schenker Group.

“35 years have passed since the legendary MSG concert Live At The Budokan. Like a miracle Michael Schenker returns to Japan with his past original singers from the ’80’s to celebrate the Michael Schenker Fest with Barden, Bonnet and McAuley at the amazing Tokyo International Forum. 5000 fans witnessed an anthology moment of quintessential hard rock music of the highest calibre. It’s a miracle that after all these years, something like this took place with the original band members of MSG. Being able to go back to those days and celebrate the music is an exciting experience for the band, as well as for old and new fans. To being able to re-experience, and for the new audience to get a feel of what it was like, is incredibly enjoyable. For Michael Schenker it was an amazing feeling to have all of his MSG Family from the ’80’s performing together and especially with Graham Bonnet, who he never got to play any concerts after their Assault Attack album that was originally released in 1982. Fortunately, being able to have the participation of original MSG members such as Gary Barden, Chris Glen and Ted McKenna being part of it, and somehow, to perform with Robin McAuley and Steve Mann again as well, was pretty awesome for Michael Schenker. The soldier Wozzeck (Christian Gerhaher) flits through a world that he is unable to decipher. The doctor torments him with absurd medical experiments; the captain humiliates and ridicules him. And Wozzeck’s lover, Marie (Gun-Brit Barkmin), with whom he has a child, cuckolds him with the drum major. Wozzeck becomes a murderer, stabbing Marie to death. Georg Büchner’s drama fragment, on which Alban Berg based his first opera, is an unflinching case study of social injustice and human suffering. But it is also a grotesque piece that thrives on exaggeration – and in which only a fine line separates the unfathomable from the ridiculous. Accordingly, director Andreas Homoki forgoes all realism.

His nightmarishly radical production is inspired by puppet theatre. Christian Gerhaher’s role début as Wozzeck can only be described as sensational: his capacity for vocal and dramatic subtlety is simply breath-taking. At the rostrum of the Philharmonia Zurich, Fabio Luisi explores both the expressionistic and the more intimate aspects, reminiscent of chamber music, in Berg’s seminal (more…)
