The late Oscar Menzel, who recorded as Airwaves, left a significant legacy that the electronic music community has routinely failed to acknowledge or come to grips with. An admirer and obvious colleague-in-spirit to pioneers Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Robert Schroeder, Pete Namlook, and so many other recognized synthi boffins, Menzel’s small but important catalog bristles with enough ideas to fill dozens of albums, accomplishing within a mere handful of recordings what lesser artists spend a lifetime attempting. The follow-up to his earlier Carpe Sonum issue Biomechanical, Multiverse represents his unreleased fourth work, and as part of his broader oeuvre, will undoubtedly go down as one helluva swan song. Utilizing a vast array of then-contemporary equipment—his gear list reads like a portfolio of the finest analog creations birthed by Moog, Korg, Ensoniq and Roland—Multiverse is a synth fetishist’s wet dream, a kaleidoscopic trip down the alleyways of both Menzel’s soundmakers and his hyperkinetic-embodied imagination. Gear aside, none of these pieces in any way act like demonstration tracks for would-be weekend synth warriors; there’s a devilish muse at work here, a symbiotic relationship between player and module, a literal man-machine. The high-energy photons Menzel prods from his devices are nothing short of astounding, the actual compositions bordering on revolutionary—never one to become merely a sum of his influences, Menzel literally ignites these dazzling excursions with a deft sweep of hand, diamond-sharp prisms fragmenting every blip, bleep, bulge, and blush into a million points of interplanetary light. Travelling the spaceways like no other, both Multiverse and the entire Airwaves catalog sports a cadre of visionary achievements that are utterly magical to behold.

Édouard Ferlet has already explored intriguing byways for the Alpha label: in 2015 he and Violaine Cochard recorded ‘Plucked Unplucked’, an album associating piano and harpsichord – a successful venture that will soon see a follow-up. The bassist Stéphane Kerecki has already made several recordings for Outhere, including ‘Nouvelle Vague’, a prizewinner at the Victoires de la Musique. The career of the trumpet player Airelle Besson has been on a high since 2015, when she won both the Prix Django Reinhardt of the Académie du Jazz and the ‘Révélation’ Award at the Victoires du Jazz. These three jazz musicians met and decided to form a trio in order to combine their universes and their ambitions. Here is the fruit of their first year of companionship, a programme presenting compositions by each of them, an album wearing the colours of jazz but featuring several tracks directly inspired by great standards of the classical repertoire, including ‘Es ist vollbracht’ from Bach’s St John Passion, the Pavanes of Ravel and Fauré, the Valse sentimentale of Tchaikovsky, and Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance, which can be recognised behind the ‘Stances du sabre’. The refinement of the compositions and the playing and the musicians’ capacity for listening to each other are a source of endless pleasure and fulfilment.

L’idée de monter un quartet de ce genre n’est pas nouvelle pour la talentueuse Airelle Besson. En effet, elle avoue en 2014 (année des premières répétitions avec le groupe) qu’elle avait passé les cinq années précédentes à potasser le sujet. Très rapidement l’alchimie entre les membres du groupe prend place et Airelle Besson affirme son choix de collaboration avec Benjamin Moussay (piano, synthé ) et Fabrice Moreau (batterie). La découverte de la perle rare se fera plus tard en la personne d’Isabel Sörling. La Scandinave à la voix d’agent utilise parfois son organe vocal comme un instrument, rendant le jazz mélodieux d’Airelle Besson encore plus aérien. Organique et minimaliste de bout en bout, l’ensemble musical de Radio One est gracieux et délicat. En plaçant l’émotion au cœur du projet, le quartet transforme son jazz en nuage où les auditeurs prendront plaisir à se poser. Aimi Kobayashi is a leading young Japanese pianist, one of the finalists at the Chopin Competition in 2015. Born in Yamaguchi, Japan, on 23 September 1995, Aimi began her piano studies aged three, and made her first appearance with orchestra at the age of seven, followed by her international debut two years later. Since then, Aimi has appeared at the Carnegie Hall in New York no less than four times. Her international career continues to flourish: she was invited by various venues in Moscow, Poland and Brazil, amongst others. She has amazed audiences with her performances with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century under Frans Brüggen, as well as the Moscow Virtuosi with Vladimir Spivakov. She has performed in Poland several times, including at the International Music Festival “Chopin and his Europe”, and in concerto programmes by numerous Polish orchestras. She has performed with Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Hyogo Pac Orchestra, and Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, and received high acclaim for her recitals in Japan, including at the Suntory Hall.
