Four Tet has released a pair of new albums: Parallel and 871. The two albums follow Kieran Hebden’s most recent full-length Sixteen Oceans, which came out earlier this year. Hebden recently revealed that he and Madlib had finished work on the reclusive producer’s solo album Solo Ancestors, sharing the single “Road of the Lonely Ones.” He teamed with Thom Yorke and Burial for a pair of songs—“Her Revolution” and “His Rope”—earlier this month.

A crazy tinkerer from the techno sphere, Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet pens a ninth UFO, of which he has a knack for creating. The bulimic British—who, when he doesn’t work on his own music, mixes for The XX, A$AP Rocky, Oneohtrix Point Never, Aphex Twin, Explosions In The Sky, Super Furry Animals, Radiohead, Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey, Manic Street Preachers, Sia and even Black Sabbath—pursues here his 360° electro-new age trip armed with the Ableton Live software. His world is atmospheric at times, overtly techno at other times, sometimes even world, and, in any case, completely impossible to pin down. Four Tet being absolutely eclectic (he had penned a splendid FabricLive volume in perfect line with his kaleidoscopically personality, an intense trip in 2-step and garage land where we notably crossed paths with Dan Snaith, his friend from Caribou, but also with Burial, Crazy Bald Heads and even the master Ricardo Villalobos), his disc looks like him more than ever. It’s some great piece of art with no blinkers on, conceived with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith on synths (on LA Trance) and Tom Bake at the hang (on Lush).

Four Jacks and a Jill were South Africa’s entry into the late-’60s folk-rock scene, and their American debut contains three international hits: “Timothy,” “Master Jack,” and “Mister Nico.” “Timothy” wasn’t even released in the U.S. when it became the group’s first international hit in 1967, but the enigmatic folk-rock gem “Master Jack” written, vaguely, from the standpoint of a miner addressing his boss gave the group a Top 20 hit in the States and became the song most closely associated with the group. “Mister Nico” is an obvious attempt to repeat the formula of “Master Jack” (all of the group’s U.S. hits, in fact, have the words “mister” or “master” in their titles), and “I Looked Back” is derived from the mid-’50s country hit “Looking Back to See.” Although the harmony-laden folk-rock is the most appealing of several styles they attempt on Master Jack, their first American album, there is also a little Africana (“Hamba Liliwam”) and outright rock (“Penny Paper”). Their childlike aura sometimes resulted in excessively cute songs like “Fifi the Flea” and “La La Song,” but when they got it right as they did on their major hits Four Jacks and a Jill made a unique contribution to the musical kaleidoscope of the late ’60s.

The second and final album by Four Jacks and a Jill garnered no hits on the level of their sole U.S. Top 40 entry, “Master Jack,” but Fables is a completely charming slice of sunshiny folk-rock. Lead singer Glenys Lynne’s dreamy vocals are at the center of these simple, upbeat songs, surrounded by crisply strummed acoustic guitars and occasional keyboards and strings. Interestingly, much of the album makes use of the group’s South African heritage, with thumb piano and other local percussion coloring songs like the traditional folk tune “Mama Come Home” and a pair of songs written by their compatriot, Miriam Makemba, “The Click Song” and “Pata Pata.” Highlights include the subtly psychedelic “Huckleberry Ferry Land,” the bubblegum “Three Little Bears,” and a handful of songs that recall early Bee Gees hits, such as “Sad Little Pigeon” and the delicate “Butchers and Bakers.” Lynne’s helium-pitched vocals and blank delivery do no favors to the misbegotten cover of the Newbeats’ “Bread and Butter,” though. A rarity due to its near-total lack of U.S. sales and airplay, Fables is well worth seeking out by sunshine pop fans.

After forming in New Jersey in 2013, indie rockers Forth Wanderers make their Sub Pop debut five years later with Forth Wanderers. It’s not their first LP, but given that singer Ava Trilling and guitarist Ben Guterl were still in high school when they started the group, and it’s their first record with an outside producer (Cameron Konner), it offers their boldest and most consistent sound to date. Call it a best foot forward warranting an eponymous title. When writing the album, they honored a practice established at their inception in which Guterl writes kernels of songs and sends them to Trilling, who works on lyrics and vocal melodies, as they collaborate from separate locations. That was necessary here, as the two were attending colleges in different states. With a full rock five-piece to bring the songs to life in the studio, and clear ’90s lo-fi and emo influences in play, the results are both muscular and agitated, even while Guterl’s guitar lines and Trilling’s melodies tend toward the immaculate. On “Nevermine,” for instance, there are even passages where the serpentine vocal line is doubled by guitar, while everything else but an arpeggiated guitar drops out. Throughout the set, the vocals and lead guitar seem to duet (especially on “Taste” and “New Face”). When the full band is present, the precise melodic lines, crashing cymbals, and strummed distortion are all united by introspective, often candid lyrics delivered by distinctively angsty vocals. Even the musically effervescent “Not for Me” opens with the lyrics “I woke up with you/Put on my shoes/I left before you saw me…Before you could follow me.” Despite the song’s driving, soaring catchiness, all is not right, as reflected not only in the lyrics but in fleeting moments of dissonance and off-balance rhythms. Those tendencies are more obvious on the sparser “Be My Baby,” a warped lullaby that fades out on a bent pitch. Altogether, it’s a rock-solid set, notable for good songs as well as a distinctive if simultaneously throwback sound.

K-pop levels up with popera Forte di Quattro. Combining elements of pop and opera, the so-called ‘popera’ singers performed four tracks off their first album. Crossover is a common genre in other countries, but despite Korean artists fusing different genres for decades, many Korean audiences are unfamiliar with ‘crossover’, not seeing it as a separate genre in itself. “Many Koreans think crossover means popera, but that’s a misconception. Popera is a kind of a crossover, but there can be many more, such as the fusion of jazz and Korean traditional folk songs, or of rap and classical music. So, the genre will always be developing”.

When Heitor Villa-Lobos was commissioned to contribute a composition to the 400th anniversary of São Paulo in 1954, he was not disappointed: his 10th symphony “Ameríndia” is a huge work. Oratory? Choral symphony? Or is it simply a symphony? It’s hard to say: she wants to be Ode to Brazil and at the same time conjures up a historical unity that the country actually does not have. Villa-Lobos succeeds in no less feat in arranging the set-to-music texts than in forcing indigenous myth and the Christianity of the colonialists into a familiar get-together: the Jesuit priest José de Anchieta, who is one of the founding fathers of São Paulo, becomes Sumé, the “father of the fathers”, that God-like figure with white skin, who according to Indian mythology once came across the sea and the inhabitants cultivated crops and the The use of fire was taught. Villa-Lobos comes up with a music that subtly infuses South American color, streaks mystical sounds, while being easily comprehensible, but never cheap. Of course, the comparison with Beethoven or Mahler lags behind, the symphony always remains “Brazilian”, does not become universal – and it is precisely in this that it unfolds its enchanting peculiarity. The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and Choir under Isaac Karabtchevsky play this work with clarity and temperament, thus delivering a listening experience that is not just “exotic”, but actually opens up wonderfully strange worlds of sound and thought.

Giovanni Sgambati, a composer admired by Wagner, was the man Busoni predicted would take Italian music “towards a bright new future”. Sgambati’s Symphony No. 2 is a compendium of Austro-Germanic devices whose mix of chromaticism and melodic invention is invigorating. Lost for decades, it was reconstructed by Rosalind Trübger whose performing edition is recorded here. Sinfonia epitalamio was commissioned to celebrate a royal wedding. Loosely programmatic, this beautiful work embraces the pastoral and celebratory framed in the form of a symphonic poem.

Bianca e Fernando, commissioned for the inauguration of the Carlo Felice Theatre in 1828, was composed at the start of Bellini’s career as one of the most important opera composers of the 19th century. The superb music for this dramatic story of filial love, wicked intrigues and triumph over tyranny was received with the ‘jubilation and admiration of the citizens of Genoa’ and greatly admired by the likes of Donizetti, earning Bellini recognition throughout Italy and beyond. This acclaimed first modern performance brings to light precious lost pages of music, reviving the original ‘splendid celebration’ of its premiere.
