Summer Night Concert 2014
Vienna Philharmonic – Christoph Eschenbach – Lang Lang
The renowned orchestra presents the world’s biggest annual classical open air concert live from their hometown Vienna, Austria on Thursday, May 29th, 2014

The Summer Night Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic is an annual open-air event that takes place in the magical setting of the Schönbrunn Palace Park in Vienna with the palace as a magnificent backdrop. Everyone is invited to come to this unique occasion with free admission. Each year up to 100,000 people can take up the invitation, or enjoy on radio and TV in over 60 countries.

About the Summer Night Concert: Since 2008 the Vienna Philharmonic has provided an outstanding experience for the people of Vienna and guests to their city with this free concert in the park of Schönbrunn Palace. The palace and its Baroque park, which have UNESCO World Heritage status, are an extraordinary setting for this special concert.

In the recent years the orchestra has been conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, Valery Gergiev, Franz Welser-Möst, Daniel Barenboim and Georges Prêtre. Among the previous guest solists: Yefim Bronfman and Benjamin Schmid. This year, the concert will be conducted by Christoph Eschenbach with special guest pianist Lang Lang.

About Vienna Philharmonic: The tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic goes back to 1842, when Otto Nicolai conducted a Grand Concert with all members of the imperial “Hof-Operntheater”. This event was originally called “Philharmonic Academy” and is regarded as the origin of the orchestra. Since its founding, the orchestra is managed by the administrative committee – a democratically elected body – and works artistically, organizationally and financially autonomous. All decisions are reached on a democratic basis during the general meeting of all members. (more…)

Widespread Panic – 2013.10.04 – Family Circle Stadium, Charleston, SC (2013) Blu-ray 1080p MPEG-2 DD 2.0

• Widespread Panic took the stage at the Family Circle Stadium in South Carolina for the first night of their two night run. After warming up with a killer set by openers Umphrey’s McGee, the Charleston crowd was ready to rock and the stadium bleachers were packed with Spreadheads rising all the way up to the sky! The opening notes of “Ribs and Whiskey” brought on an uproar from the energetic fans and gave JB a chance to showcase a bluesy slide guitar riff. A spectacular jam through “Surprise Valley”>”Blight”>”Surprise Valley” came next as Jimmy Herring kicked off the sandwich with the instantly recognizable opening riff. During “Blight”, Sunny and Todd had a chance to give the fans their first taste of drum section jam – a tease of the incredible percussive jamming that would fill the weekend. Later in the first set, JoJo danced his fingers along his piano while singing the fan-favorite track “Greta,” a clever song about the Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry.

• Set two maintained the high energy of the night with classic Widespread Panic songs blended into covers masterfully adapted to fit the famous Panic sound. “Makes Sense To Me” and “Pigeons” were blended with stand out performances of Bill Withers’ “Use Me” and JJ Cale’s “Travelin’ Light” and “Ride Me High”. As “Travelin’ Light” segued into “Rebirtha,” Schools inspired cheers of recognition and joy with his iconic bass riff. The band played “Porch Song” with crowd lights on and every fan in the stadium had their arms in the air – havin’ a good time! When the band returned for an encore of Cat Stevens’ “Trouble,” JB serenaded the crowd underneath a spotlight before playing a high energy “Climb To Safety”. The fans left exhilarated, looking forward to another incredible show by Widespread Panic the following night!

Widespread Panic – 2013.10.05 – Family Circle Stadium, Charleston, SC (2013) Blu-ray 1080p MPEG-2 DD 2.0

• For the second and final night of their stop in Charleston, Widespread Panic took the stage at Family Circle Stadium before thousands of cheering fans. JB picked up his guitar and admired the fans, commenting “Some of y’all are wayyyy up there!” The band broke straight into fan favorite “All Time Low,” setting the stage for another high-energy night. Next was “Saint Ex” from Panic’s most recent studio album, “Dirty Side Down.” “Chilly Water” had fans ecstatically tossing water in the air during the chorus. The beautifully written “Pilgrims” let the fans slow to down and appreciate one of Panic’s inspiring older songs. To close the set, the band played a rocking rendition of Neil Young’s “Mr. Soul,” giving Lighting Director Paul Hoffman a chance to show off his beautiful rig, illuminating the stadium with gyroscopic cones and spotlights of all colors. To top it off, the beautiful ASL interpreter Edie Jackson was feeding off the energy in the venue, signing the lyrics for audience.

• JoJo kicked off the second set with the opening piano riff to “Tall Boy,” singing with the support of the band and fans. “Barstools and Dreamers” showcased just how funky Schools can get with his bass riffs, as the song ended he said “Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time,” indicating the beginning of their cover of Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain.” At this point in the show, Umphrey’s McGee members Jake Cinninger (lead guitar) and Joel Cummins (keys) joined the stage. The next ten minutes included a jaw dropping call-and-response guitar solo trade between Jimmy and Jake. Umphrey’s McGee percussionist Andy Farag then joined Sunny to provide double percussion for a thrilling version of “Red Hot Mama.” In the second section of the song, Joel and JoJo were trading piano solos back-to-back. A rhythmic “Drums” was up next, with Todd, Sunny and Andy Farag providing a groove for the fans to boogie to. The second set maintained the intensity and energy, blending fan favorite songs. As Panic took the stage for an encore, JB was showcased playing his mandolin for “End Of The Show,” before capping off the weekend with “Ain’t Life Grand.” These two spectacular shows are sure to have Spreadheads talking for years to come!

Eminem: Live From New York City (2005) Blu-ray 1080i AVC DTS-HD MA 5.1

Title: Eminem: Live From New York City
Nation: USA
Year: 2005
Genre: Rap
Format: 1920×1080
Duration: 78
Starring: Eminem

Director: Hamish Hamilton

Eminem is THE global rap superstar. This concert was filmed at Madison Square Garden in New York in 2005 at the culmination of his farewell tour prior to his retirement. It’s a spectacular show with multi-level staging, amazing lighting and guest appearances from D12, Obie Trice and Stat Quo. Originally filmed for US TV station Showtime the show is now available on Blu-ray for the first time and gives us Eminem at his charismatic best.

Presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080i “live” transfer, Eminem: Live from New York City arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Eagle Rock Entertainment.
Filmed at Madison Square Garden in 2005, this show looks good on Blu-ray, but not exceptional. The close-ups are well detailed, contrast is adequate, and clarity pleasing. Multiple strategically positioned cameras are used to capture the impressive stage from a number of different angles. This allows the viewer to get a very good feel of the atmosphere in the venue. This being said, I did notice a bit of motion-judder popping up here and there when the cameras zoom in on Eminem and his guests. There is also some low noise during a few of the panoramic shots. Still, the overall quality of the presentation is good, and I have absolutely no problem recommending Eminem: Live from New York City to you. (Note: This is a Region-Free Blu-ray disc. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your PS3 or SA regardless of your geographical location).

There are three audio tracks on this Blu-ray disc: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, and LPCM 2.0. I opted for the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track and later on did a few random comparisons with the other two tracks for the purpose of this review.
The “live-effect” is very strong in Eminem: Live from New York City. The crowd noise is almost always very easy to hear, and at times it feels as if the show is actually a large club event (listen to “Business”). Eminem’s singing, however, is clear and easy to follow; there are no disturbing echo effects. This being said, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track will not impress you with strong surround activity as Eminem’s singing gets priority.
I feel that the LPCM 2.0 track is actually quite suitable for Eminem: Live from New York City. It partially eliminates some of the distracting crowd noises while at the same time it treats Eminem’s singing just as well as the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track does. So, I would certainly recommend that you experiment with it to see how much you like it.
There are no serious issues to report with the Dolby Digital 5.1 track, but I feel that it certainly lacks the qualities the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 track have.

Mozart did not write the Requiem as despairing funeral music for his impending death. Rather, the piece proclaims eternal light and redemption.
