In its fourth edition, the Annecy Festival has become a major player in the national and international cultural landscape. In residence at the 2013 Annecy Classic Festival, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic closes the festival and joins forces with its iconic conductor Yuri Temirkanov for a 100% Rachmaninov programme! Russian to his very marrow despite his exile in the United States, Sergei Rachmaninov plumbs the depths of the Slavic soul. • Rarely has an orchestra enchanted and thrilled ist audience as did the National Children’s Orchestra of Venezuela at the Salzburg Festival! This astonishing group was founded in 2010 by José Antonio Abreu as part of El Sistema, and Sir Simon Rattle conducted ist first-ever concert in Caracas. At the Salzburg Festival, it was Rattle on the podium again, conducting the children’s orchestra at its international debut.
• A choir for hard-of-hearing and deaf youths? Sounds like a contradiction in terms, but the one-of-a-kind White Hands Choir of Venezuela proves the opposite, and this 60-mins film documents the choir’s first tour abroad following an invitation from the Salzburg Festival. Beethoven’s Missa solemnis was performed on 13 and 14 February 2010 at the traditional memorial concert to commemorate the bombardment of dresden during the last weeks of World War II. Under Christian Thielemann, the Staatskapelle Dresden proved itself exceptionally qualified to master this work’s magnificient challenges. Thielemann “conjured up the gigantic cosmos of the Missa with such lightness and grace that its mystery seemed to reveal itself”, wrote the Frankfurter Allgemeine-Zeitung. No less remarkable was the fabulously homogenous solo quartet of singers.

With the accompaniment of a gospel choir and a brass section and with films by artist Jim Lambie the band brought this brilliant album to life from the ecstatic opening of “Movin’ On Up”, through the soul ballads “Damaged” and “Shine Like Stars” and on to the triumphant finale of “Higher Than The Sun”, “Loaded” and “Come Together”.
Also included as a bonus is the 40 minute rock and roll set which the band performed in the earlier part of the evening including “Country Girl”, “Rocks”, “Jailbird”, “Swastika Eyes” and more.
