Gustav Mahler’s 8th Symphony breaks the boundaries of the symphonic form in a world-embracing gesture. Riccardo Chailly is one of the staunchest performers of this work, and therefore it seemed appropriate in many ways that he chose this work for his inaugural concert as Claudio Abbado’s successor and new music director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. The artistic statement was combined with a deeply personal conviction: it should be a “tribute to Claudio,” the highly esteemed friend and colleague to whom Chailly, as he emphasizes, owes very much. On 12 August 2016, Claudio Abbado’s unfinished Mahler cycle with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra was completed in a breathtaking performance of the Mahler 8th, simultaneously heralding in a new era in Lucerne. Theodor W. Adorno regarded Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 as “the first work of modern music”. Adorno’s teacher, Alban Berg, saw in it “the expression of a tremendous love for this world, a longing to live in peace and to savor Nature to its depths – before the arrival of Death. For it will inevitably come.” This live recording of the composer’s last completed symphony is part of an ongoing Leipzig cycle of Mahler’s symphonies. It confirms once more the Gewandhaus Orchestra’s reputation as an exemplary ensemble for the performance of Mahler’s music. The highest level of performance culture combined with a sharply contoured, transparent, polished, and detailed manner of playing, plus infectious verve and an unmistakable sound characterized by a darkly golden color – these are qualities responsible for the Gewandhaus Orchestra’s international reputation. Since the time of Bruno Walter, the orchestra has developed over the years a deep understanding of the works of Gustav Mahler, which in their collaboration with Riccardo Chailly has been continued.

Mahlers Eighth Symphony is arguably the grandest and most ambitious piece of symphonic music ever written. The composer himself regarded it as his opus summum, and an incredible number of participants at the hugely successful Munich première in 1910 earned it the nickname Symphony of a Thousand. At Leipzigs International Mahler Festival 2011, Riccardo Chailly commanded almost 500 musicians, and the overwhelming result of their joint effort inspired the Leipzig-based and internationally renowned artist Neo Rauch to the painting for the cover of this Blu-ray. “The audience knows that the performance of a Mahler symphony is not only a musical experience, but is also emotionally effective” (R. Chailly). This counts especially for Mahler’s enigmatic sixth symphony, an emotionally stirring challenge for both performers and listeners, whilst also being one of the most impressive works in musical history. Chailly’s interpretation with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is “intensely great” (Die Presse). “Chailly uncompromisingly considers this sixth symphony through the lens of modernity; looking forward, not retrospectively staying in ‘late romantic’. In this celebrated orchestra, all sections splendidly come together and fulfil an ‘open’ sound, conserving whilst respecting its original beauty.” (Salzburger Nachrichten)

“the playing of Chailly’s Gewandhaus Orchestra is unarguably superb and it is fair to say that not even Abbado or Boulez reveal more in the way of instrumental substrata…Mahler’s rural interludes glisten in decidedly novel fashion, sounding as much like Berio as Bruckner…It’s a sensational package in its way” –Gramophone

As Riccardo Chailly points out, “The Fifth begins with a dark, gloomy, and tragic tone, but then is enlivened in the Scherzo and Adagietto, and eventually ends with a more positive character in the Finale – perhaps for the last time in Mahler’s life. The Adagietto is a revelation, a spiritual oasis. It is not an expression of pain, but rather Mahler’s declaration of love to Alma – a song without words.“ With the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Chailly gives the piece an unsurpassed intensity of sound and emotional expression. He achieves a compelling arc of tension in which the symphony’s unique fascination unfolds. The Wiener Zeitung characterized Chailly’s interpretation as „impressive with powerful and unreserved intensity.“

“Chailly takes us on a journey from darkness to light…He’s a pleasure to watch, being neither over-demonstrative nor affectedly matter-of-fact. He looks like what he’s conducting and one sense that the orchestra agrees. If the rest of this projected second Chailly Mahler cycle is as good as this, then I suspect we have treats aplenty in store.” –Gramophone

An exhilarating Symphony No. 2 by Mahler, conducted by Riccardo Chailly in Leipzig.
Recorded in May 2011 in the gorgeous Gewandhaus Leipzig, this concert demonstrates a powerful orchestra as well as a perfect mastery in singing. Once more, Riccardo Chailly reaches a peak with the Gewandhausorchester. His love for Mahler, whose symphonies he has conducted many times (notably during the 2010-2011 season, when the world was commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the composer’s death), give Chailly an incredible amount of energy, a transcendantal power of communication with the musicians. Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 was also one of Claudio Abbado’s most beloved symphonies – and Riccardo Chailly served as Abbado’s assistant at La Scala when he was 20.
In this recording, Chailly is joined by Sarah Connolly in “Urlicht.” The last movement gathers three choirs (the Rundfunkchor Berlin, the MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig and the GewandhausChor) as well as soprano Christiane Oelze and mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly.
The long relationship between Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig started in 1986 with a highly acclaimed concert at the Salzburg Festival. Riccardo Chailly currently assumes the position of Gewandhauskapellmeister. He has recorded many albums with the orchestra, notably the complete Brahms symphonies, which was recently awarded the BBC Music Magazine Orchestral Award. (more…)

Originally formed during the early ’70s in Birmingham, England, Priest is responsible for offering metal fans worldwide some of the genre’s most influential and landmark albums (1980’s ‘British Steel,’ 1982’s ‘Screaming for Vengeance,’ 1990’s ‘Painkiller,’ etc.), while helping spread metal music to audiences not normally associated with the genre (Live Aid in 1985, and a surprise appearance on American Idol in 2011), and helping popularize the now instantly recognizable “denim and leather” look.
For decades, Judas Priest has been one of the greatest live bands in the entire heavy metal genre. And as evidenced by Battle Cry, Priest rock harder and more ferociously than ever. (more…)

Before Woodstock and Monterey Pop, there was Festival. From 1963 through 1966, Murray Lerner visited the annual Newport Folk Festival to document a thriving, idealistic musical movement as it reached its peak as a popular phenomenon. Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash, the Staple Singers, Pete Seeger, Son House, and Peter, Paul and Mary were just a few of the legends who shared the stage at Newport, treating audiences to a range of folk music that encompassed the genre’s roots in blues, country, and gospel as well as its newer flirtations with rock and roll. Shooting in gorgeous black and white, Lerner juxtaposes performances with snapshot interviews with artists and their fans, weaving footage from four years of the festival into an intimate record of a pivotal time in music—and in American culture at large.
• New, restored 2K digital transfer, approved by director Murray Lerner

The 23-year-old Gioachino Rossini completed his masterpiece Il barbiere di Siviglia with incredible speed – legend has it in just 13 days – which Rossini attributed to ‘facility and lots of instinct’. He adapted Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais’ play Le Barbier de Séville, part of a dramatic trilogy that also inspired Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro.
