In the summer of 1970, some of the eras biggest rock stars all took to the rails for Festival Express, a multi-artist, multi-day, multi-city concert tour that captured the spirit and imagination of a generation. What made it unique was that it was portable; for five days, the bands and performers lives, slept, rehearsed and let loose aboard a customized train that traveled from Toronto, to Winnipeg, to Calgary, with each stop culminating in a mega-concert. The entire experience was filmed both off-stage and on, but the extensive footage and sound tapes of the events remained locked away for decades, only recently having been rediscovered and restored. LABYRINTH, Italy’s finest purveryors of power/prog metal, held their first reunion show at Frontiers Metal Festival in Trezzo Sull’Adda on October 30, 2016. The revamped lineup played “Return To Heaven Denied”, the band’s most popular record (so far), in its entirety for only the second time ever. The landmark album was originally released by Metal Blade in 1998 and is considered by many to be one of the highlights of the power metal genre in the late ’90s.

Finishing »Gods Of Violence« took KREATOR – featuring Petrozza, Sami Yli-Sirniö (guitars), Christian “Speesy” Giesler (bass) and Jürgen “Ventor” Reil (drums) – about three years. After Petrozza had pre-produced all of the eleven tracks in winter of 2015, KREATOR went to Sweden in order to team up with legendary metal producer Jens Bogren in his Fascination Street Studios once again. What emerged from the recording sessions was bound to fundamentally redefine what KREATOR is all about. Every year since 1991, the Berliner Philharmoniker have marked the anniversary of their foundation with a concert in a different cultural capital: for their twenty-first European Concert on 1 May 2011, they were the guests of the magnificent Teatro Real in Madrid. Their programme comprised the exuberant rhapsody España by the French composer Emmanuel Chabrier, Rachmaninov’s dramatic Second Symphony and a quintessential Spanish composition: Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.
Schiller’s play Don Carlos famously opens with the line “The pleasant days here in Aranjuez are now drawing to a close”. Music lovers are more fortunate because thanks to Rodrigo’s immortal guitar concerto they can continue to savour the magical mood in the summer palace of the Spanish kings, especially when the soloist is a flamenco virtuoso like Cañizares, who can throw such fascinating light on every facet of this multi-layered score.
After the interval, the orchestra turn to Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony, a relatively unknown work, which Sir Simon Rattle – a self-confessed fan of the composer – conducts without a score. As he noted afterwards, the orchestra “played the hell out of it”, resulting, in the opinion of the press, in a thrilling and very special experience. “The orchestra was urged on by Rattle’s impulsive direction, playing with brio and unleashing wave after wave of tension, turning the symphony’s sweeping movements into a self-contained and thrilling whole.”

Guitar virtuoso and rock legend, Steve Hackett (formerly of Genesis), releases his latest album The Night Siren on 24th March 2017 through InsideOut Music (Sony). As implied in the title, The Night Siren is a wake-up call… the warning of a siren sounding in this era of strife and division.
The Night Siren showcases Steve’s incredible guitar as strongly as ever, along with musicians from several different countries who Steve invited to join him in celebrating multicultural diversity and unity. This includes singers from Israel and Palestine, who both actively campaign to bring Jewish and Arabic people together. There are also instrumentals from the USA and Iraq and a multiplicity of sounds, including the exotic strains of Indian sitar and Middle Eastern tar and oud, the ethnic beauty of the Peruvian charango and the haunting Celtic Uilleann pipes.
Steve is widely travelled, making friends everywhere he goes and has always embraced multicultural diversity. In these times of unrest, he has been inspired to express his belief that the world needs more empathy and unity. His wish to involve a range of musical sounds, instruments, musicians and singers from different parts of the world is both a development of his eclectic approach to music and shows how people can be brought together, even from war torn regions.
Talking about his latest work, Steve says, “This latest waxing represents a bird’s eye view of the world of a musical migrant ignoring borders and celebrating our common ancestry with a unity of spirit, featuring musicians, singers and instruments from all over the world. From territorial frontiers to walled-up gateways, boundaries often hold back the tide. But while the night siren wails, music breaches all defences. To quote Plato, ‘When the music changes, the walls of the city shake’.”
The musical journey takes us from ‘Behind the Smoke’, focusing on the plight of refugees throughout the ages, to the penultimate track ‘West to East’ which reflects on the damage of war and the hope for a better world. From personal to universal, the themes celebrate the life force, breaking free from chains of repression.
In addition to singers Kobi and Mira (Israeli and Palestinian), also featured on the album are Nick D’Virgilio (drums) from the USA, Malik Mansurov (Tar) from Azerbaijan & Gulli Breim (drums & percussion) from Iceland, along with regular Hackett collaborators: Roger King, Nad Sylvan, Gary O’Toole, Rob Townsend and Amanda Lehmann.
