The Hurting would have been a daring debut for a pop-oriented band in any era, but it was an unexpected success in England in 1983, mostly by virtue of its makers’ ability to package an unpleasant subject — the psychologically wretched family histories of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith — in an attractive and sellable musical format. Not that there weren’t a few predecessors, most obviously John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band album — which was also, not coincidentally, inspired by the work of primal scream pioneer Arthur Janov. (But Lennon had the advantage of being an ex-Beatle when that meant the equivalent to having a box next to God’s in the great arena of life, where Tears for Fears were just starting out.) Decades later, “Pale Shelter,” “Ideas as Opiates,” “Memories Fade,” “Suffer the Children,” “Watch Me Bleed,” “Change,” and “Start of the Breakdown” are powerful pieces of music, beautifully executed in an almost minimalist style. “Memories Fade” offers emotional resonances reminiscent of “Working Class Hero,” while “Pale Shelter” functions on a wholly different level, an exquisite sonic painting sweeping the listener up in layers of pulsing synthesizers, acoustic guitar arpeggios, and sheets of electronic sound (and anticipating the sonic texture, if not the precise sound of their international breakthrough pop hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”). The work is sometimes uncomfortably personal, but musically compelling enough to bring it back across the decades. (more…)

This marks the second anniversary of Claudio Abbado’s death on 20 January 2014 aged eighty. The set – on CD and Blu-ray (audio and video) – captures Abbado’s final concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker‏ in May 2013. It was the end of a treasured partnership that bore plentiful and remarkable fruit.

Abbado first conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker‏ in 1966, the start of a unique relationship that was to last nearly half a century. Succeeding Herbert von Karajan into the biggest job in the world of classical music Abbado was elected by the members of the orchestra as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker‏ serving from 1990 to 2002. He became only the fifth chief conductor in the orchestra’s history. Following his resignation from that post Abbado would return to the orchestra as a guest. The relationship between orchestra and Abbado remained cordial and these appearances as guest were clearly events to savour.

In May 2013 there was a series of three concerts at the Philharmonie which turned out to be Abbado’s last with the Berliner Philharmoniker. They were described as a “triumph” by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Abbado’s programme comprised two key works from composers both close contemporaries: Felix Mendelssohn’s enchanting A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hector Berlioz’s progressive Symphonie fantastique.

Szymanowski’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Song of the Night’ creates a potent atmosphere of Persian mysticism in its rich blend of voices and exotic orchestration. His Symphony No. 4 is largely extrovert in character and has a prominent rôle for piano. Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 can be found on NBD0021. The CD release of Symphony No. 3 was Gramophone Editor’s Choice and given 5 STARS by ClassicFM (8.570721), and Symphony No. 4 an ‘unbeatable’ 10/10 from ClassicsToday.com (8.570722); the complete cycle acclaimed as ‘revelatory’. Karol Szymanowski – Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 (2008) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]

Karol Szymanowski – Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 (2008)
LPCM 2.0  and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.0  | 24bit / 96kHz |  Time – 00:53:12 minutes | 6,27 GB | @ Naxos

Although Szymanowski later dubbed his Symphony No. 1 a “contrapuntal-harmonic-orchestral monster” and disavowed the influence of Wagner, Reger and Richard Strauss, it is an astonishingly powerful work by a composer only in his mid-20s and still enthralls listeners a century after its première. The unusually structured Symphony No. 2 is a work of great impact and invention, with many passionate and varied contrasts in its use of solo instruments, in particular the violin. On their CD release, these thrilling interpretations of Szymanowski’s Symphony No. 1 (8.570722) earned 5 STARS from BBC Music Magazine, while the Symphony No. 2 (8.570721) gained Gramophone Editor’s Choice and 5 STARS for these “deliriously sensual scores” from Classic FM.

Since the early twentieth century there has been a radical renewal of pedigreed chamber genres. We need only think of the late sonatas of Debussy, or of the string quartets of Bartók; or, to enter a high modernist space later in the century, of the duos and quartets of Elliott Carter; or, to move into a less prescriptive space that some like to label postmodern, of Ståle Kleiberg in our own time. In the solo and chamber works recorded here, Kleiberg recaptures something of the ethos of the private sphere. The solo works have an inward character, occluding display, while the chamber works restore the thematic sharing and instrumental characterization of the classical era, but in both cases of an informal kind, shy of system, wary of rhetoric.
Ståle Kleiberg is a major Norwegian composer with a considerable international reputation. The works on this album represent a lesser-known, but valuable, part of his output. His innovatory approach, formal command and technical mastery are especially apparent in his chamber music oeuvre, and it is gratifying to be able to present the following selection here: String Quartet No. 2, Ruf und Nachklang, Ashes, Piano Trio No. 2, Sonata for Violin and Cello and Sonanza e cadenza.

Immersive Sound is a completely new conception of the musical experience. Recorded music is no longer a matter of a fixed one-dimensional setting, but rather of a three-dimensional enveloping situation. Stereo can be described as a flat canvas and Surround Sound as a field, but Immersive Sound is a sculpture that you can literally move around and relate to spatially; surrounded by music you can move about in the aural space and choose angles, vantage points and positions. The 9.1 Auro-3D on this Pure Audio Blu-ray features sound reproduction that is more realistic than anything you’ve heard before. It delivers a new standard in immersion, fully enveloping the listener in a cocoon of life-like audio. (more…)

In the early romantic period, struggling with the aftermath of absolutism’s collapse, people had to find new solutions in all realms of communal life. Because old certainties vanished, another vision of society emerged, shaped by artists: poets, painters and musicians. They viewed a higher world order in nature, to be felt by the individual, and expressed in a synthesis of all arts. Especially in music, these ideas were embodied with a new freedom of stylistic decisions. The sonatas for natural horn and fortepiano by Franz Danzi, Ferdinand Ries und Nikolaus von Krufft are virtuosic compositions with stunning dialogues between the horn and piano parts. They explore the full range of timbres, flamboyantly surpassing classical structures in search of new modes of expression. The verve and profusion of colors in the performance of Steinar Granmo Nilsen and Kristin Fossheim incorporate the early romantic idea that music was the most royal of all arts.

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong: Ella And Louis / Ella And Louis Again (1956/2013) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]

Two of the most influential and popular voices in modern music, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong form a jazz dream team on Ella and Louis. A once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece, their distinctive vocals meld seamlessly together along with Armstrong’s exceptional trumpet playing and the first-rate accompaniment of pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Buddy Rich. This recording has become the touchstone and template for jazz vocal duets.

“There isn’t much one can say about an album whose title is Ella And Louis Again. The “again” obviously means they’ve already done one album together and beyond that, what can you say about two people like Ella and Louis? I doubt that there’s anyone today who loves music, who doesn’t know Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. About all that can be pointed out, I suppose, is that we’ve again selected some of the best product of some of the best songwriters of our age. The backing, with the Oscar Peterson Trio and Louis Bellson substituting for Buddy Rich, remains, as in the first album, quiet, discreet, swinging.” – Norman Granz from the original liner notes (more…)

Janine Jansen follows her first Decca recording of violin favorites with this highly-energetic set of Vivaldi’s four violin concertos, known as “The Four Seasons.” The violinist leads an acclaimed group of soloists through a refreshing reading of this beloved masterpiece. This recording is riveting with Janine’s usage of one player per part. Absolutely essential.

“This is a delight with a seriousness of purpose that rather belies the star-centred packaging. Jansen and friends offer this ever-popular work in a cut-down, chamber version that grows on you with each listening. The playing is full of vigour and imagination, and the sound merely adds to the appeal… you’re unlikely to resist Jansen’s charms for long.” –Gramophone

With well over 100 recordings to choose from, such are the musical possibilities thrown up by Vivaldi’s vibrant pictograms that no two versions sound remotely alike. Of the old-school versions, Henryk Szeryng directing the English Chamber Orchestra on Philips (now sadly deleted) still holds sway, although finest of recent accounts on   modern instruments is Anne-Sophie Mutter’s second DG outing with the Trondheim Soloists, an exhilarating musical rollercoaster ride that surprises at every dive and swerve, without resorting to the grating eccentricity and puerile shock tactics of several period-instrument versions.
If Mutter turns Romantic semantic sensibilities on their head, Janine Jensen might be said to marry traditional expressive values with the textural vitality and bracing inventiveness of authenticity. Jansen possesses the ideal combination of intonational purity and tonal allure, and is beguilingly responsive to the music’s shifting moods, creating the uncanny impression of a series of vividly drawn characters passing before our eyes as we listen. The all-star ensemble responds to her every whim and caprice with a ravishing sequence of captivating sonorities that grow naturally out of the music rather than merely being superimposed on it. The recording possesses a seductive autumnal glow that bathes the listener in a stream of golden sound. Forget the meagre playing time: with this exemplary release, the benchmark has been raised just that bit higher. 5 out of 5 stars for performance, 5 out of 5 stars for sound. –Julian Haylock, BBC Music Magazine (more…)
