Claudio Monteverdi has given music history a number of musical ideas that continue to have an impact to this day – ostinate basses such as the “walking bass”, the Ciaccona or the lamento bass with its four descending tones, dramatic lamentations such as the Lamento d’Arianna, heaped dissonances such as at the end of the Ballo delle ingrate, which sometimes straddle the boundaries of the atonal.

Much of this was already so successful during his lifetime that it soon became out of sight who had once been the originator of these inventions. At the end of his long life, Monteverdi decided to once again draw the sum of his work in two major publications and leave a message to posterity of all that he had conceived and perfected in more than fifty years of compositional work – in the secular VIII Book of Madrigals (1638) and the spiritual Selva morale et spirituale (1641).

These two collections are full of musical memories of the twenty years as a court musician in Mantua and of almost thirty years of church service as St. Mark’s chapel master in Venice, full of references also to all the compositional ideas that originally came from his pen. They are like musical diaries of a composer’s life, in which one’s own artistic will always sought its own personal, individual path, even within the scope of his official duties as a courtly or ecclesiastical musician.

The program aims to trace Monteverdi’s artistic career in his works, to read his carefully curated publications like musical diaries and to bring to life all those musical ideas that were so important to him.
