On the back of the CD case is a photo that is basically a heads-up as to what you can expect from this debut album by 23-year-old jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara. She is standing outside wearing a black dress and a strange yellow-and-white wrap. Her face is turned up to the sky, her eyes and mouth closed, her jaw clenched; her arms are held straight down by her sides with her fingers splayed wide. It’s a stance that bespeaks intense energy and a certain defiance. Most of the music contained in the CD seems to have been made in a similar attitude, for better and, occasionally, for worse. Uehara plays with an almost demonic energy and amazing stamina; on a program that consists entirely of original compositions, most of them delivered in a standard piano trio format, she zips from style to style with a sense of urgency that borders at times on the manic. Her propulsive “XYZ” opens the album with churning intensity; “Double Personality” finds her alternating between nearly harmolodic free improvisation and carefully composed modern jazz; “Joy” offers a gentle breath of fresh air before she resumes her headlong musical charge. The album ends with a bonus track, an unaccompanied piano piece called “The Tom and Jerry Show,” which alternates between loopy, Carl Stalling-esque avant-gardism and high-speed ragtime. By the end of this album you’ll be tired, but it’s a good tired. Heaven only knows what her next album will sound like, but the laws of physics would seem to dictate that she’ll have to slow down a bit. (more…)

The Stabat Mater is Dvorak’s most celebrated choral work. He began composing the piece in late 1875, but set it aside. Then, two tragedies befell him and he was plunged into an uncharacteristically melancholic mood. The deaths of his eleven-month-old daughter and three-year-old son compelled Dvorak to complete his masterpiece. Even though stricken with grief, Dvorak still could not resist writing simple, folk-like, melodies for his luminous Stabat Mater. On this performance, acclaimed conductor Mariss Jansons leads four superb soloists and the combined forces of the chorus and orchestra of the Bayerischen Rundfunk.

Recorded on March the 28th, 2015, at the KKL Luzern, Concert Hall.

…In his Haffner Symphony (No 35), Mozart deleted two movements of a previously written piece, made further minor emendations and produced this little masterpiece. The opening Allegro points the way to Klemperer’s approach to each of the three later works here which is as one would expect – serious, weighty and pointing towards Beethoven. The real skill comes from being weighty without being ponderous or losing the lightness inherent in Mozart. The delightful Andante – yet again one blesses the value of splitting the violins – the Minuet and Trio (wonderful balance), and a marvellously shaded Finale complete the opening symphony.
The Linz Symphony (No 36) was one of Mozart’s “written against the clock” pieces -there were so many in his short life – but the listener would never know. A slow introduction prefaces a steadily paced opening Allegro. The gently rocking Adagio that follows shows the quality of the original recording with its clarity in the inner parts. The Minuet and Trio point to rustic revelries rather than an elegant drawing room (lovely playing from the wind section) and in the Finale – played with tremendous dash – the trumpet parts add interesting variety. The exquisitely shaded contrasts between sections yet again show what a superb orchestra the Philharmonia was in its prime… Harry Downey, MusicWeb International
