One of the most wondrous friendships in musical history was the one between Pyotr Ilyitch Tchaikovski and a rich noblewoman, Nadjezhda von Meck. She worshipped Tchaikovski from afar and initiated a correspondence which, over the years, would amount to some 1200 letters. Madame Von Meck became Tchaikovskis patroness and granted him a generous yearly allowance. In this way it became possible for Pyotr Ilyitch to resign his detested job as a professor at the Moscow conservatory, concentrate on composing, and travel, preferably abroad. The two agreed that they would never meet, in order to avoid any emotional complications which might arise. Thanks to the extensive correspondence, we are well informed about numerous details of Tchaikovskis life, including the background to his Fourth Symphony in f, op. 36, from 1877. Around this time, Tchaikovski had unexpectedly rushed into a marriage in order to avoid revealing his homosexuality. After a week with his bride, the composer suffered a nervous breakdown and made an attempt at suicide, after which the marriage was dissolved on medical advice. Filmed during CMA Music Festival in June, the special features many of today’s most exciting Country Music stars, including Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Lee Brice, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Randy Houser, Sam Hunt, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, Maddie & Tae, Kip Moore, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Thomas Rhett, Darius Rucker, Cole Swindell, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Chris Young, and Zac Brown Band as they hit the stage during the four-day party and celebration of America’s music.

This is probably the most pop and accessible of the IQ albums; with Paul Menel on lead vocals, it definitely sounds like the previous “Nomzamo”. So, the IQ fan who expects complex and elaborated progressive songs could be a bit disappointed. So, you have to be prepared to hear something more pop here, although the progressive dimension is still quite present.
The songs are actually accessible and very catchy: the compositions are fresh, cute and never dark. Menel’s voice is OUTSTANDING!!! The record is well balanced: some songs are really pop, well made and very catchy (“Drive On”, “Sold On You”, “Through My Fingers”), while other ones are more progressive (“Nostalgia”, “Wurensh”). The mix of modern varied keyboards and sought-after clean & slight distortion guitars a la MARILLION, combined to a wonderful elaborated fretless bass is very pleasant. Even if the drums are less elaborated here, they still do a great job. All the songs are very well made! No fillers!

Gilmour made only 2 alums: about 6 years separate them. On this one, the keyboards are really modernized, despite there is an omnipresent accessible organ sound. Gilmour’s lead vocals are excellent, as always. Some parts are really symphonic (beautiful orchestral arrangements). There are very sustained emotional guitar solos, like on the “Let’s get metaphysical” track. “Blue light” almost has a big band rock style, as reveal the trumpet-like sounds, slightly reminding me the horns arrangements of It Bites’ “Whole New World”. There are some excellent fretless bass parts, and Gilmour’s excellent acoustic rhythmic guitar is omnipresent. A couples of songs were written with the help of Pete Townsend. All the songs are very good.

Chris Squire’s single solo effort is an essential masterpiece. It certainly is not a lost Yes album just merely Squire’s exceptional creation which demonstrates his importance in progressive rock and equally his influence in this genre. How can you do a follow up with another solo album with Fish Out of Water being your first?’ Silently Falling’ and ‘ Safe’ without question the highlights of the album but even the shorter tracks like ‘ Hold Out Your Hand’ and the years ahead of it’s time’ Lucky Seven’ are an aural delight. The bass thumps throughout, there are layers and layers of keyboards and even the brass is so refreshing. A lost Yes album, not but as good as any Yes album, possibly.

There are several Michael Jackson greatest-hits compilations out there, each one its own take on what should be the definitive portrait of the gloved one’s career. The Ultimate Collection, The Essential Collection (different from the one here), and Number Ones have all surfaced in 2003 and 2004, and HIStory a few years prior. Each one of these collections, while commendable in its attempt to thoroughly document Jackson’s accomplishments, has fallen woefully short in one aspect or another. This has finally been rectified with this installment of Sony’s outstanding Essential collection. Starting with his campaign with his brothers in the Jackson 5, this two-disc set tours through every important single and every important fan favorite short of including his duet with Paul McCartney on “Say Say Say” (the Beatle does, however, make an appearance here on “The Girl Is Mine”). From Off the Wall to Dangerous, it’s all here in one concise package, making it the ideal reference point from which exploration into his deeper catalog can begin. While die-hard fans will already have every single song contained herein and may be weary to purchase another greatest-hits compilation short of a greatest-hits compilation including his backing vocals on Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me,” this may be the only one fans and casual listeners will ever have to purchase to get their fill of the King of Pop’s magic. –AllMusic Review by Rob Theakston (more…)

The stars and the sky at night have always fascinated people and kindled wonder, faith and superstition. In ASTROGNOSIA we are in the world of astrology with its interpretation of the year’s twelve signs of the zodiac, each with its own characteristics. The work is held together by the changing phases of the moon on its journey through the heavens, and it is played here by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, conducted by Ingar Heine Bergby. AESOP’S FABLES is written for narrator and orchestra – the narrator here being Dennis Storhøi – and is based on Herman Wildenvey’s translation of the fables. It is inspired by Wildenvey’s playful re-telling of the stories in dazzlingly rhythmic verse.
