Twelve CD box set collection featuring all of Allan Holdsworth’s solo albums from 1982-2003. That title is no hyperbole-it was a proclamation that ran on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine in 2008, and is a feeling shared by fans and guitarists all around the world. Still, though, Holdsworth remains largely under-rated; many who admire his most famous work have overlooked dozens of fascinating finds to be made on his decades of recordings. This collection is a treasure trove of such discoveries, as it brings you all 11 of his albums as a solo artist, producer and group leader since 1980 plus the live-in-Tokyo album Then! And a 40-page booklet full of liner notes and archival photos. You also get previously unreleased bonus tracks, and all these albums have been newly remastered from the original tapes: I.O.U. (1982), Road Games (1983), Metal Fatigue (1985), Atavachron (1986), Sand (1987), Secrets (1989), Wardenclyffe Tower (1992), Hard Hat Area (1993), None Too Soon (1996), The Sixteen Men Of Tain (2000), Flat Tire (2001) and Then! (2003). These albums, many of which have been out of print and very hard to find for years, include one intriguing composition, ethereal track, dazzling fusion rocker and daredevil guitar passages. The Afflatus Quartet/Quintet has been in the music scene since 1995. Afflatus Quartet derives from Afflatus Quintet, the winner of the International Music Competition of the ARD Munich 1997 which is one of the most prestigious competitions of chamber music in the world. With Radek Baborák, the world-famous horn player and Afflatus member, taking “vacation” from the ensemble, the four members, each the splendid musician active in Europe, especially in Czech Republic, make the best possible unity with the woodwind quartet ensemble. Their second album features classical repertoire by Beethoven and Mozart. All of them are arrangements, but the distinguished ensemble members of Afflatus create sound rich and full of variety of colors, like an organic instrument made of four musicians, with celestial, beautiful sound for “Classical”.

In fashion circles, the adjective “bespoke” denotes custom-made suits and shirts and signifies the person who designs and constructs them. On The Bespoke Man’s Narrative, pianist Aaron Diehl extrapolates this notion to matters of musical invention. The five originals and five arrangements comprising the programme were chosen specifically for Diehl’s quartet of young all-stars: vibraphonist Warren Wolf, bassist David Wong and drummer Rodney Green.

Johan Agrell was in many ways a traveler between the worlds: in Uppsala, the Swede’s great talent was recognized by the Hessian envoy, which resulted in Agrell being summoned to a court near Kassel in Germany. He later went as municipal chapel-master to Nuremberg.

Musically, Agrell was a brilliant Baroque composer in whose works many of the new early Classical trends were anticipated. This recording thus continues the series of AEOLUS releases that feature the orchestral music of this exciting period, a series that has already very successfully presented works by Fasch, Hertel, and Molter.
The Helsinki Baroque Orchestra is a shining star of Finland’s musical life. The young musicians around the harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen appear year after year throughout Europe. Further releases on AEOLUS are in preparation.

Agnieszka Oszanca – Salvatore Lanzetti: Sonatas for Violoncello Solo and Basso Continuo, Op. 1, Vol. 1 (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

The protagonist of this recording, Salvatore Lanzetti, an Italian cellist and composer, was born in Naples around 1710. He studied cello and composition in his hometown. There is evidence to suggest that between 1730 and 1754, Lanzetti spent a substantial amount of time in London, where, according to Charles Burney, he helped to popularize his instrument and establish its newly acquired solo status amongst the English music lovers. In 1736 in Amsterdam, our 12 Sonate a Violoncello Solo e Basso Continuo were published as his Opus 1, dedicated to Federico di Brunswick (Frederick, Prince of Wales). His fame as one of the first true cello virtuosi and that of a composer prone to the technical innovations of the instrument was recognized by M. Corrette in his Methode, théorique et pratique pour apprendre en peu de tems le violoncelle dans sa perfection (Paris 1741), where he refers precisely to the Sonatas op. 1. The beauty of the Opus 1, the subject of this recording, lays in their incredible versatility, not only in terms of technical complexity, but also character and the mixture of the French and Italian style which was popular at the time. The extensive use of double stops, shifting, explorations of the entire fingerboard, thumb position and employment of complex bowing techniques, that were until this time the reserve of violin technique, testify to Lanzetti’s extraordinary command of his instrument and fearless imagination.

The undeniable traits of Felicjan Szopski’s output are the following: folk music and works by Fryderyk Chopin as his sources of inspiration; nurturing national elements while striving to discover new musical means, different musical narratives, and innovative harmonic solutions; attention to every detail of the composition; well-thought-out, consistently implemented ambitious musical thought remaining in a permanent and unbreakable contact with words. Szopski would select his texts with extraordinary reverence, very consistently, only by Polish writers he knew personally. Szopski’s musical thought conveys the message and the mood of the words, fully reflecting the character of the text. This selection of his songs are performed by soprano Agnieszka Niewiadomska and pianist Szymon Blaszynski.

Following the thread of the violin, Agnes Pyka crosses four centuries of music. Versatile instrument, sometimes dancing, or virtuoso, the violin is also the link between different musical aesthetics.

In Bach’s Partita, which honors the popular chaconne of Hispanic origin, the violin symbolizes the peak of Baroque art, offering the musician a rich range of techniques of this period. At Khachaturian, he evokes Balkan folklore, while Thierry de Mey makes it the instrument of a surprising variation of the very “courteous” Passacaille.

Following the wonderful debut album, Philharmonics (2010), and the grandiose sophomore attempt, Aventine (2013), the latest album from Agnes Obel proves beyond a doubt that the Danish artist based in Berlin certainly isn’t resting on her laurels, determined to further evolve her unique musical style with Citizen of Glass. Obel has revisited a number of previous compositions and created some genuinely novel sounds with what is a clear (and successful) attempt to go deeper into the emotional heart of her music. On tracks like Familiar, for example, her haunting vocals are paired with none other than herself – and who’d have thought the result so beautiful. Bigger, and more nourishment than ever before for our musical hungers. Sound is like matter in this wonderfully orchestrated third album.

‘Aventine’ is the second album release from Berlin-based Danish phenomenon Agnes Obel, the follow up to her critically acclaimed debut ‘Philharmonics’ of 2010. Like ‘Philharmonics’, the new album was written, arranged, and produced by Agnes, who provides piano and vocals. The album features a small ensemble including cellist Anne Müller, who has also played with Nils Frahm, along with Mika Posen of Timber Timbre playing the violin and viola on ‘The Curse’, ‘Pass Them By’ and ‘Fivefold’. Robert Kondorossi of Budzillus plays guitar on ‘Pass Them By’. Building on the sonic template of her debut, ‘Aventine’ is a deeper and darker (though none the less elegantly sublime) affair, with songs of genuine heart stopping beauty in the likes of first single ‘The Curse’, ‘Dorian’ and ‘Fuel To Fire’ Originally from Copenhagen, Agnes has lived in Berlin since 2006, where ‘Aventine’ was recorded at her Chalk Wood Studios between January and May 2013.
