Camille El Bacha is a pianist, composer, improviser and son of the pianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha. Together they often perform as a duo, but Camille and his group Leone Jadis also go their own ways between classical, film and electronic music. He opens our series “Piano Stories” with the program “Lumen”, which he describes as “an arrangement of preludes and improvisations”. His own compositions resonate in the preludes of Bach and Chopin, which are taken from the works of the well-tempered Clavier and the twenty-four preludes op.28, respectively. Camille El Bacha invites us on a journey where styles and eras merge into a single artistic impulse: “At the piano, I move almost unconsciously from interpretation to composition or improvisation. A Chopin Prélude can inspire me to improvise, which can then become a new composed piece’.

While learning to play the clarinet, musicians like Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw were the clarinet-playing superstars of the music business. During the war, a young Buddy DeFranco worked his way through famous big bands with his instrument (Krupa, Barnet and Dorsey), all the while believing there was a big future ahead as a swing musician. But the war ended and with it the big band era — swing was now the music of yesteryear. So what else could you do with a clarinet? In 1948, Buddy DeFranco discovered the new jazz of Charlie Parker: “It simply bowled me over. I couldn’t sleep for nights after hearing it.” DeFranco began to adapt Parker’s ideas, and became the first to play bebop entirely as it should be on the clarinet. And he remained the only one: one-of-a-kind, a maverick, an outsider. DeFranco was 30 years old when he recorded Mr. Clarinet. It was one of his first albums — an album entirely in the spirit of bebop. It begins with “Buddy’s Blues,” a slow 12-beat number, the clarinet version, so to speak, of the classic “Parker’s Mood” and, in line with the new LP format, three times as long at nine minutes!

Bjorn Moe is already known by many as a skilled and creative drummer. On his debut album, he draws inspiration from all over the world’s rhythm landscape, and takes a trip to Africa as well as to the Middle East or the Caribbean.

The title track of the album, for example, is written in 7/8 time, which is a somewhat unusual choice for a “pop song”.

The fascinating thing is that these rhythmic antics are performed so elegantly and seamlessly, that the listener hardly I notice it, but I’m just drawn into the song. These slightly quirky rhythmic moves in the songwriting, gives both the title track and the debut album a distinct character, and a personal signature.
Although Bjorn Moe mainly moves in landscape pop and rock, his music has elements from both jazz and world music, which creates an exciting atmosphere on the album.

Die Vorliebe für den Einsatz von Hall und Effekten hat sich das Trio aus Konstanz schon vor über sieben Jahren auf seinem Debüt “Bikini Beach” selbst in die Wiege gelegt, und wer seine Bandwebseite unter der Domain fuzzmehard.com betreibt, weiß eh was er tut. Auf “Appetizer” lehnen Bikini Beach ihren effektvollen Garage-Rock à la Mudhoney mehr denn je an Bands der großen Psychrock-Ära in den 60ern an, schlagen mit viel Fuzz aber auch wieder den Bogen zu Genrekollegen der Gegenwart wie den Dortmundern Daily Thompson. Das kurze, aber wirkungsvolle “She’s So” verblüfft mit den rhythmischen Vibes von Dick Dale & His Del-Tones’ “Miserlou”, angereichert mit Akkorden, die eher an Kings Of Leons “Red Morning Light” und damit wieder an eine spätere Garage-Rock-Generation erinnern. Das folgende “King Ueli” flimmert und surrt spacig vor sich hin, verliert sich zwischendurch jedoch etwas in elektronischen Sound-Sperenzchen. “Rabbit Hole” ist exakt die Jefferson-Airplane-Hommage, die man dem Titel unterstellen möchte, und bezogen auf das gesamte Album und die wiederholten Gesangseinsätze von Bassistin Charlotte Love blitzt dieser Vergleich immer mal wieder auf, so etwa im ersten, lauernden Teil des schließlich wütend ausbrechenden “Animal Anger”. Insgesamt servieren Bikini Beach einen “Appetizer”, von dem sie wissen, dass er den Fans der Band am besten schmeckt.

Any number of recordings pair Bach’s music with those of the minimalists, with Pärt being primary among them. The idea is that Baroque-style instrumental figuration is common to both and offers a contrast to Romantic musical dynamics. However, the equation is often too pat, and the two composers require some mediation to make them fit. That is what happens in this release by violinist Arabella Steinbacher and the conductorless Stuttgarter Kammerorchester. Steinbacher’s solution is not to enliven Pärt but to push Bach in a minimalist direction with straightforward, rather featureless performances where the violin (or pair of violins in the Concerto for two violins and orchestra in D minor, BWV 1043) is blended into the textures. It works for several reasons. One is Steinbacher’s Guarneri violin, with a gorgeous sonority that flows through the slow movements and forms a counterpart to the rich resonances of Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel, which closes the program. Beyond that is the dynamic of the entire program, which takes on a hypnotic quality. One might not choose Steinbacher’s Bach concertos on their own, but in this context, they have a cumulative effect. This novel recording is especially recommended to Pärt fans. – James Manheim
