In its new Brahms album, the Notos Quartet crosses the boundary between chamber music and the symphony. Alongside the First Piano Quartet, Op. 25, the four musicians have also recorded an arrangement of Brahms’s Third Symphony, Op. 90, specifically prepared for them by Andreas N. Tarkmann. To a certain extent, Arnold Schoenberg’s arrangement of Brahms’s Op. 25 for full orchestra inspired this idea. However, the Notos Quartet has adopted a diametrically opposite approach, determined instead to reveal characteristics of chamber music within Brahms’s Third Symphony. According to the musicians, “Schoenberg found such compositional riches in Brahms’s Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25 that he arranged the work for a large symphony orchestra, justifying his approach with the words: ‘1. I like this piece. 2. It is seldom played. 3. It is always very badly played, because the better the pianist, the louder he plays, and you hear nothing from the strings. I wanted to hear everything at once, and this I have achieved.’ Conversely, we would like to demonstrate the extent to which Brahms’s Third Symphony is actually grounded in his understanding of chamber music. To this end, we have made the piece our own through this version for piano quartet, in which previously unheard structures are suddenly revealed. These novel structures compel us to hear the piece in an entirely new and impassioned way, namely, as a symbiosis between a bed of symphonic sound and chamber-like clarity, which together afford proof of Brahms’s tremendous mastery as a composer.”

The mysterious nothing, nowhere. is the project of Vermont-based musician Joe Mulherin, a singer, rapper, and songwriter who mixes cathartic emo-rap, trap, and indie rock styles in equal measure. After building up his profile with a handful of small independent releases, he made a splash with 2017’s Reaper, his critically lauded second album and debut for Pete Wentz’s DCD2 label. His bloodlust EP, a collaboration with blink-182’s Travis Barker, was released in 2019, followed by the album Trauma Factory in 2021. A native of Foxborough, Massachusetts, Mulherin began playing acoustic guitar at the age of 12, first attempting emo-style versions of popular rap songs. After devoting time to a series of short-lived bands throughout his teens and twenties, he decided to work solo. Again merging elements of hip-hop with guitar-based instrumentation, and citing songwriters such as Sufjan Stevens, Owen, and (Sandy) Alex G among his inspirations, he started using the moniker nothing, nowhere. in April 2015. At first, Mulherin kept his identity hidden, covering his face in promotional photos and making a habit of wearing hoods while performing. His first album, the nothing, nowhere. lp, appeared in June 2015, followed by the EP Bummer later the same year. Working on some of the tracks with producers he’d met on music-sharing sites, the latter was recorded in his parents’ basement in Vermont around the time he committed to pursuing music full-time. The EP Who Are You? followed on Synergy Records in early 2016, and in 2017, the album Reaper arrived on DCD2 and Equal Vision Records. It featured appearances by Dashboard Confessional and Lil West and raised Mulherin’s profile significantly. After signing with Fueled by Ramen, nothing, nowhere. released his third full-length, 2018’s Ruiner. He returned the following year with bloodlust, a collaborative EP with drummer Travis Barker that included a featured spot by blackbear. In early 2020, nothing, nowhere. issued the single “Nightmare” just prior to kicking off a lengthy world tour. A longtime vegan, straight edge, and conservationist, Mulherin used the shows to promote green touring and partnered with local environmental charities along the way. That July, DCD2 and Fueled by Ramen issued One Takes, Vol. 1, a collection of stripped-down versions of his songs that he had been sharing on social media. Vol. 1 selections included a second version of “Nightmare” and a cover of American Football’s “Never Meant.” Later that month, the new song “Lights (4444)” appeared, and by the end of 2020, multiple songs had been shared from his upcoming long-player Trauma Factory. The album was released in February of 2021. – Marcy Donelson

NOTHING’s third full-length recording, Dance On The Blacktop, is the next chapter in the band’s tumultuous story and like its predecessors, pulls from all corners of life with a focus on the bleak and despairing. Captured by renowned producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile) at Dreamland Studio in Woodstock, NY, Dance On The Blacktop is a stirring collection of songs accentuating the band’s love for all sounds 90s from both sides of the pond; from alternative rock and shoegaze to the realms of pop and post-punk. Across the course of 45 minutes, NOTHING weave together nine tales of heightened confusion, anxiety, paranoia, depression and chronic pain juxtaposed against angelic yet apocalyptic, reverberating walls of shimmering sound. Dance On The Black Top is a fervent, emotional tour-de-force, the sound of a band at the peak of their individuality.

Digitally remastered edition of this 2011 live album. Started as a one-man studio project in 2005 by multi-instrumentalist Giancarlo Erra before evolving then into a full band, Nosound inventively combines influences from ’70s psychedelia, ’80s/’90s ambient, soundtracks, contemporary alternative and post-rock. The music is evocative and intense with personal songwriting and uses a variety of vintage and modern electronic instruments. Influences range from Pink Floyd to Brian Eno, from Radiohead to Sigur Ros, passing through rock and electronic music. The album was recorded during the rehearsal process for a special one-off Nosound solo gig that Erra performed in London in August 2010. For this intimate gig, Giancarlo created new track arrangements along with a new live setup that allowed him to play keyboards and/or acoustic guitar while singing as well as using and recreating all the original sounds and effects from the original studio albums. No backing tracks were used, only loops/tapes and real live played instruments. The tracks were recorded straight from stereo outputs with no overdubs or edits involved resulting in unique and personal interpretations of the best tracks from the band’s catalogue.

The Caminos del Inca, or Inca Trails, is a road network that traverses South America connecting lands and peoples. The area’s musical traditions are ancient and varied, taking in indigenous sounds as well as European influences, and the composers represented on this album have all been inspired by this musical legacy, the people of their homeland, and the land itself. The interconnections include late-Romanticism, folkloric dances, reinterpretation of popular music, mestizo (“hybrid”) elements, Stravinsky-like primitivism, and music of simplicity and beauty that both captures and celebrates village life.
