..Either a love letter to the 1980s or parody of that particular soundscape, this album is a bit listener-specific as it doesn’t cater to everyone’s taste. Some may really enjoy what they hear, others maybe not so much, while a few may feel overwhelmed by the over-the-top soundscape. This will probably be a “love it or hate it” -type of album. RECKLESS LOVE took a pretty big risk coming out of their 5-year slumber with such a record and only time can tell if their gamble paid off or not….

Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) and Victor Hugo (1802- 1855) were towering figures in their respective disciplines, both in France, and in the world, during their lifetimes. These songs by Widor, to Hugo texts, cover a variety of emotions, from sweet introspection to quiet desperation. Rebecca Hays is perfect for these works. She and pianist Jeffrey Peterson make the most of these marvelous songs. Rebecca Wascoe Hays’ lush, full-bodied soprano and commanding stage presence have brought her diverse critical acclaim. She brings an innate dramatic intensity and musical intelligence to all of her repertoire. In past seasons season, she has sung the title role in Tosca with Louisiana Opera, been heard as the Wife in the world-premiere performance of The Breath of Life at Texas Tech University and been featured as the soprano soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Additional concerts have included recitals/masterclasses at Brigham Young University, Central Oklahoma University and The University of Texas at Arlington. She was heard as the soprano soloist in the Brahm’s Requiem in May 2017 at Alice Tully Hall in New York City’s Carnegie Hall.

Dès le chœur d’entrée, Raphaël Pichon et son ensemble Pygmalion seront sensibles à la nuance, emplissant leur geste de couleurs et d’attentions finalement peu courantes dans ce moment le plus souvent marqué par l’ampleur et la densité du son. Les inflexions pianissimos, le soudain allégement des textures, le ton général chambriste placent cette Passion, devenue a posteriori le temple et sommet de l’expression dramatique religieuse du XVIIIe siècle, ailleurs. Bach y est ici le cousin direct d’un Georg Philipp Telemann dont les propres Passions présentent des effectifs plus restreints et parfois plus variés en terme d’instrumentarium. Elle s’inscrit aussi dans les perspectives doloristes des Membra Jesu nostri de Dietrich Buxtehude.

The spirit of adventure, braggadocio and tall stories… for her second album on the Berlin Classics label, the Norwegian violinist and Hardanger fiddler Ragnhild Hemsing has chosen to focus on one of Norway’s best known and most legendary characters: Peer Gynt. Although her solo instruments are not part of the original orchestra formation, she chose various sections of the incidental music to the stage play of Peer Gynt op. 23 and had them arranged for her Hardanger fiddle and the violin with string orchestra accompaniment – thereby creating a link to the traditional story of Peer Gynt in the context of Norwegian folk music.

Palatín belonged to a musical line that dates back to the 18th century and among whose members we find, for example, the creator of the first Spanish musical dictionary. He was born in 1852 in Seville (Spain). From a young age he showed great musical talent and mastery of the violin, so it was considered when he was only 12 years old, that he should continue his studies in what was then the best place to study violin, The Imperial Conservatory of Paris. There, he would study with Jose White and with Jean-Delphin Alard, Pablo Sarasate´s teacher. This would be possible thanks to a scholarship granted by the Excelentísima Diputación de Seville after having won the relevant competition. His compositions include 29 pieces for violin and piano, a concerto for violin and orchestra which is only the second Spanish Romantic concerto for violin as well as works for orchestra, choir, chamber music or solo piano adding up to a total of 89 works.

There’s a great many veterans in the melodic rock and metal industry. One of those is Swedish guitarist/songwriter/producer Tommy Denander whose resume for working with some many great bands and artists, looks like a who’s who of the genre. His Radioactive project, begun in 1991, has often taken a back seat to his ongoing studio work for other bands. But now this talented fellow has returned with his fifth Radioactive album, XXX, which features multiple veteran vocalists including Daniel Byrne, Robbie Lablanc, Jerome Mazza, and Robin McAuley.

Lothar Koenigs conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in a filmed concert performance of Richard Strauss’ comedy Ariadne auf Naxos.
It’s the party to end all parties. But two entertainments have been double-booked to mark the evening’s climax – a serious opera and a slapstick comedy. The star soprano is throwing a tantrum and the staff are hiding the chaos from the boss. There’s only one solution: perform both shows at the same time.
This is a brand new concert staging by brilliant young director Louisa Muller. Among the specially selected cast are revered German soprano Dorothea Röschmann as the opera’s wronged heroine, Thomas Quasthoff as the house’s major-domo and prize-winning Scottish singer Catriona Morison as the composer.

This album is a late recording by the legendary Thomas Beecham. Much like some of his contemporaries (such as John Barbirolli), Beecham enjoyed composing witty pastiches and transcribing the old masters. In particular, the Beecham-Handel suites after excerpts from operas and instrumental music remain very famous. In 1928, Serge Diaghilev commissioned Beecham to produce music for his ravishing ballet The Gods Go A’Begging after Handel, and whose choreography designed by Balanchine was inspired by 18th-century pastorales. Here is the version conducted by the composer himself, remastered from the original tapes and made available for the first time on digital platforms.
