Debut Album Nottingham post-punks Do Nothing blend jerky, spidery rhythms with surreal, half-spoken vocals that recall the Fall ‘s Mark E. Smith . Do Nothing was formed in 2017 by four long-time school friends: frontman Chris Bailey, guitarist Kasper Sandstrm, drummer Andy Harrison, and bassist Charlie Howarth. All had played in various acts around the city; the band got their start at the popular Maze Club. Bailey, whose father was a singer in an a cappella folk group, grew up listening to the sounds of Simon & Garfunkel , and his own biggest influence was Tom Waits . Initially attempting to copy big names like LCD Soundsystem (as heard on their first 7″ single, “Gangs,” released in 2019), they eventually became more confident about doing their own thing, and Bailey gave his stream-of-consciousness lyrics and outsider stage persona free rein. Associated with, but wary of, the then-popular post-punk revival, they made clear it was their intention to follow their own path. Their debut EP, Zero Dollar Bill, was released in 2020; another, Glueland, arrived the following year, with an album in the works.

Just a year and a week after his award-winning album “Skeletons, Skeletons, Skeletons” was released in 2022,
Melbourne based artist Damon Smith is releasing “A Fresh Harvest From Old Seeds” another blues flavoured
LP – proving that he’s well and truly in a purple patch of creativity and not one for wasting time.

‘Skeletons…’ which was shortlisted for the Music Victoria Awards Best Blues Roots release, also saw Damon
take out the prestigious Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society’s Chris Wilson Award for the Emerging Act of
the Year and reach #2 on the Australian Blues & Roots Airplay Charts. A great achievement for Smith’s first
ever blues release.

Produced by Jeff Lang and featuring WA based guitarist Dave Brewer – two artists Smith has long respected –
‘A Fresh Harvest From Old Seeds’ (on American label Momojo Records) is in many ways a musical nod to his
acclaimed 2021 film ‘Mental As Everything’ which screened internationally and took out several awards.

“What’d I Say” is a song by American rhythm and blues artist Ray Charles, released by him as a single in 1959. The composition appeared as a result of the musician’s improvisation at one of the performances in 1958, when he and his orchestra needed to fill in the remaining time before the end of the concert. The enthusiastic reaction of the audience to the composition forced Charles to present the song to the producers, who recommended it for recording.

Music is an innate sense that taps into our very core. It exists on a prism, and the range is infinite, for anyone to think they’ve heard everything would be imprudent. Inspiration strikes in a myriad of waves, acting as a cascading waterfall in which each idea is a droplet converging into one stream. Music doesn’t know the rigid constraints of exclusivity. Preferences and ideologies can mould an individual; circumstance and fleeting moments require different melodies throughout the part being played by each being in the cosmos.

In this era of homogenized classical collections, it is great to see Testament rescue gems from the vaults of labels like EMI and reissue them on CD. This two disc set presents Rafael Kubelik’s 1960 stereo recordings of the last three Tchaikovsky Symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic. Kubelik’s 4th is one of the best ever, and has been a fan favorite for years. It has been available on CD previously from EMI directly, as part of Kubelik’s Artist Profile collection and in the budget-line Seraphim series. While nearly as good in my opinion, Kubelik’s 5th and 6th never received similar praise. The liner notes indicate that EMI’s International Classical Repertoire Committee initially did not approve these performances, though I’m baffled at why. However, many classical buyers will probably pass on these discs as well. Unless you’re a serious collector, it’s hard to justify this purchase when for less than half the price of this title you can purchase stunning accounts of Tchaikovsky’s Symphonies Nos. 4-6 by Karajan or Markevitch. But if you do settle on this Testament reissue, you’ll get three terrific Tchaikovsky performances.

On Triggered By Sunsets, the exquisite third LP from Bay Area expat Young Moon, small affirmations hit like weather events. Songs burn like generational amulets. Mercy opens the window to let a little air in.

At the end of 2019, following the suicide of a treasured friend, Young Moon’s Trevor Montgomery packed up his life in San Francisco and shifted halfway around the globe to Nelson, New Zealand. He arrived in his new home – a seaside town, known for its galleries and good weather – just as the global pandemic took hold. Without a close community to moor himself to, Montgomery dove into work; he began renting an empty masonic temple, built a recording studio inside, and tore into a fresh batch of songs.
