Internationally renowned jazz pianist, Laurent de Wilde has been described as an exciting and passionate musician. Born in the United States in 1960, de Wilde spent his formative years (1964 to 1983) in France where he was immersed in French culture, music and literature eventually studying philosophy at the “Ecole Normale Supérieure” in Paris. In 2016, “Riddles”, a piano duo album where African legend Ray Lema and de Wilde “play as few notes as possible and just the right ones”, was released. In concert, this project reaches its full potential and has lead to the duo performing regularly on French and European stages.

Transcendence as a trance, because in all black music trance is an underlying element. Transcendence as dance because the rhythm and the groove are at the base of all the music of the musician of Congolese origin. And finally, transcendence as surpassing: cleavages, its own limits, its fears and its comfort zone. For this project Ray Lema has brought together a sextet composed of Michel Alibo on bass and Nicolas Viccaro on drums for rhythm, the young Brazilian guitarist Rodrigo Viana who has accompanied him for ten years and two brass Irving Acao tenor sax and Sylvain Gontard on the trumpet. The nine unreleased tracks of Transcendence have returned to us by ear and have never come out.

Ray LaMontagne has been making albums long enough to firmly establish the warm rusticity of his singer-songwriter approach, then pursue his more psychedelic inclinations. On his eighth full-length, MONOVISION, he circles back to a sort of considered simplicity: He not only handled all of the production on his own, but the playing and engineering too. LaMontagne gives his pastoral paeans, like “Summer Clouds” and “Rocky Mountain Healin’,” handsome acoustic arrangements, while the folk-pop “Morning Comes Wearing Diamonds” and “Weeping Willow” each get entwining two-voice harmonies. He reserves his soul rasp for “Strong Enough” and “Roll Me Mama, Roll Me,” but otherwise reminds what a precise, elegant singer he can be when he wants to. The overall mood, well captured by “We’ll Make It Through,” is one of firm but weathered optimism. “Together we’ll get through,” he vows during that song in a soft, woolen timbre, settling into the next, pivotal line with a hint of resignation: “We always do.”

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 36:24 minutes | 810 MB | Genre: Latin
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Fania

Early jazz crossover: Ray Barretto, one of the leading lights of the salsa explosion and of the Fania label, will have his Barretto Power album released in a 50th anniversary HiRes edition by Craft Latino on October 23.

Barretto Power was released in 1970, some two years into the conga player and bandleader’s long association with Fania. It began a succession of genre-straddling, Afro-Caribbean masterworks that the Fania All-Stars member released in the first half of the decade. This was the album on which Barretto crystallized the tight and funky sound that he became known for, primarily in the salsa idiom and with such top players as Orestes Vilató on timbales and the young Andy González on bass.

Highlights of the LP include the enduring hit “Quítate La Máscara,” which established Adalberto Santiago as one of the great Afro-Caribbean singers of his time, and Puerto Rican composer Tite Curet Alonso’s frenetic “De Qué Te Quejas Tú.”

Raul De Souza – Plenitude (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

The Brazilian virtuoso trombonist Raul de Souza is a world Jazz phenomenon whose unparalleled career spans six decades. Early success in his home territory was followed by stardom in the USA with Sweet Lucy, part of a long and storied discography that has included collaborations with other pre-eminent musicians of his and later generations in Brazil (where he enjoys legendary status), as well as many others around the world. Still active, de Souza has recently been working with a younger crop of musicians who bring modern sounds and fresh energy to his work. As Generations Band, they are celebrating the forthcoming release of Plenitude, the extraordinary first album they have made together. Born in 1934 in Rio de Janeiro, de Souza burst onto the vibrant Brazilian music scene in his 20s and played with the likes of Sérgio Mendes, Milton Nascimento, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, co-developing the Bossa Nova of the ’50s and the Samba Jazz of the ’60s. After moving to Los Angeles in 1973, his collaborations with superstars such as Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock and Jaco Pastorius culminated in the 1977 hit Sweet Lucy, produced by George Duke. He eventually returned to Brazil, where he contributed to Tom Jobims 1996 Grammy-winning album Antônio Brasileiro. Still active as a composer and an astounding performer, de Souza has recently been working with a group of talented young musicians that has proved inspirational for all concerned. Ranging in age from 24 to 86, the intercontinental line-up of the Raul de Souza Generations Band includes Swiss born trombonist and arranger Christophe Schweizer, piano discovery Alex Correa, bassist Glauco Solter and drum prodigy Matheus Jardim. The unit originally came together in 2017 for a concert at a Jazz festival in Hamburg and has subsequently developed its own infectious blend of Funk with traditional and contemporary Brazilian Jazz, drawing on the rich legacy of rhythms, melodies and harmonies from that country and the beautiful sound of a two trombone front line. On tour shortly before the global pandemic and literally living together as a family for several weeks, the group recorded Plenitude, which consists of contemporary arrangements of de Souza’s early funk successes such as Sweet Lucy and Daisy Mae, collaborations with old friends (including a rework of Apesar de Você by compatriot Chico Buarque), plus brand new compositions.
