Tea Leaf Green offers a fresh version of their 2009 studio album Looking West as Looking West Redux.

Looking West was originally recorded by the TLG lineup at the time consisting of Trevor Garrod, Josh Clark, Scott Rager and Reed Mathis. The band tapped Mathis to produce the album however, in Reed’s own words, he “kinda dropped the ball.” Reed took the unmixed recordings and rebuilt Looking West from scratch earlier this year.

“The band invited me to take a turn as producer, and I think I actually did something close to a really good job … rrrrrright up until it was time to seal the deal, at which point I kinda dropped the ball,” Mathis explained. “We rushed the album out to the marketplace, and because it had been mixed in a van hurtling down the interstate during the endless touring of 2009, the sound was bizarre and noisy and distracted.” This time around Reed took his time at the upscale Grey Room studio in Oakland to give the LP the treatment he feels it deserves.

The new piano trio Too Noisy Fish has matured as the rhythm section of the Flat Earth Society Big Band. After improvised performances with guests like Ben Sluys and Ellery Eskelin, the trio now goes its own way.Peter Vandenberghe, already shadow composer of the Flat Earth Society, wrote the songs under the denominator of Fast, Easy or Sick. The ground-breaking compositions are shaped by the musical mastery of Kristof Roseeuw on bass and Teun Verbruggen on drums. The CD was recorded in the best possible conditions by Chris Weeda as recording engineer and Pierre Vervloesem as producer, thanks to the sponsorship of Jacob’s Creek. The result is music that freely draws on jazz, rock, free, contemporary music, techno,…. and that can not be captured by a single musical genre. The only cover song on the CD is an adaptation of “The Sky Is Falling” from “Queens of the Stone Age”.

Influential drummer Tony Williams recorded Foreign Intrigue in 1985 for the relaunched Blue Note label with pianist Mulgrew Miller and trumpeter Wallace Roney, who would both remain with Williams for the next few years in his quintet. Foreign Intrigue, featuring modern electronic instruments such as drum machines and synthesizers, also highlights the performances of veteran musicians Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and Ron Carter on bass.

“I met Tony just before we recorded Foreign Intrigue. In that first recording session I just remember being awed by his prowess at the drums. As I got to know him on a personal level through the years I was continually amazed at his intelligence, his intense involvement with music and his love for the drums.” –Mulgrew Miller

Tony Tixier – Life of Sensitive Creatures (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Following two semi-pastoral Tony Tixier originals, “I Remember The Time Of Plenty” and “Denial Of Love,” the listener is treated to a commendably loose interpretation of Louis Armstrong’s timeless “Tight Like This,” which apparently Tixier’s grandmother enjoyed singing. Whilst it retains some of the hooks of the 1920’s tune, it is transformed into something completely different. The album follows a similar pattern to the above tracks, variously populated by dulcet or forceful numbers. “Illusion” manages to combine both of these elements, undoubtedly benefitting from Tommy Crane’s crisp percussion.

But there are also more muscular tunes which include “Blind Jealousy Of A Paranoid” and the equally vibrant “Home At Last” with a robust pizzicato bass solo from Karl McComas-Reichl. Of the remaining non-originals, Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” is given an unquestionably elegant treatment and Jimmy Van Heusen’s sublime “Darn That Dream” is the epitome of restrained subtlety.

Tixier, whose formal classical piano lessons commenced at the age of six, hails from Montreuil, a suburb of Paris, France. He moved to New York City in 2012 and subsequently settled in Los Angeles. This is Tixier’s fifth album as leader and it’s a good one. Whilst clearly influenced by Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock Tixier evinces his own musical vocabulary and florid style and in conjunction with his talented sidemen has produced a really irresistible set.

“‘Sequence One’ is about running through a war zone of post-apocalyptic proportions with your significant other. It was one of the first tracks we wrote when we started making Happy In The Hollow.”, explains bassist Maxim Barron. With a hallucinatory rhythm section supported by a strong bass line and Tom Dougall’s incandescent voice, the opening track of Happy In The Hollowoffers a very good overview of what it precedes. “Each song was a blank canvas”. Indeed, Toy work on their chiaroscuro here, made of shoegaze and indie pop like Radio Dept in the Clinging To A Scheme era. There are the delicate strings of Mistake a Stranger and their distorted effects, the frantic drums of Energy, the shimmering percussion of The Willo or the aerial synths that perforate this vaporous fresco that’s full of contrasts. The English band, who are signed with Tough Love Records, produced the album themselves, recorded between their own studio and South London. Beautiful.  –  Charlotte Saintoin

Piano and clarinet duo albums are few and far between within the jazz canon. In the case of Dancing in the Dark, versatile horn player Tony Coe chose to stick to the clarinet as his saxophone case was too heavy, or so that’s how pianist John Horler recounts it. Our performance in question takes place at St Michael’s Church, Appleby in 2007 as part of the annual Appleby Jazz Festival. The setting is warm and intimate as is the church acoustic, a perfect backdrop for the varied repertoire of standards and original compositions performed. Coe and Horler dance their way through Bill Evans’ ‘Person I Knew’ and Cole Porter’s ‘Night and Day’ as well as Horler’s own ‘Piece for Poppy’, dedicated to his partner Wendy, and Coe’s contrafact to “Autumn Leaves”, titled ‘Some Other Autumn’. Both players push and pull the well-known melodies to suit the moment yet maintain complete synergy with one another, with Horler’s Bill Tatum-esque chord voicings and meandering lyrical interludes giving platform to Coe’s resounding, cadenza-like improvisations.

For a work so popular, and so highly favored by record companies, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto hasn’t been getting too much attention lately. In any case, great performances are few and far between, but this performer certainly belongs on anyone’s short list of truly outstanding versions. It has everything: transcendent virtuosity, tons of excitement in the finale, and perhaps most importantly of all, a soloist with both taste and a personal sound that allows her to make the music her own. Today’s violin soloists are so well trained that we tend to forget the difference between great technique and great timbre. Julia Fischer has both. Right from the opening of the first movement her sound positively glows.

Pavel Kolesnikov became Laureate of the Honens Prize for Piano in 2012 and gave his Wigmore Hall debut at the beginning of 2013. In his five-star review for The Daily Telegraph, John Allison praised the Russian-born, London-based artist for his recital’s ‘intelligent programming and outstanding pianism … one of the most memorable of such occasions London has witnessed’.

Hyperion is delighted to present this brilliant young artist in an album of Tchaikovsky’s Les saisons and Six morceaux.

Tchaikovsky’s symphonies and ballets are perhaps the most popular and frequently performed in the entire canon—compared to them his piano music is little-known. It is generally of a much more intimate nature than that of his compatriots, and has more in common with the emotional subtleties—and melodic beauties—of Schumann’s music.

The seasons is a cycle of twelve pieces, taking the listener through the months of the year. Each piece also has an atmospheric epigraph. The Six morceaux, Op 19, conclude with the ‘Thème original et variations’, which is often performed alone as a concert piece, but is particularly satisfying in context, as recorded here.

This is the concluding recording in Neeme Järvi’s series with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra devoted to Tchaikovsky’s three great ballets. This complete, uncut version of The Nutcracker follows The Sleeping Beauty (CHSA 5113(2)) and Swan Lake (CHSA 5124 (2)), both of which have been much awarded.

The Nutcracker draws its influences from both Hoffmann’s and Dumas’s tales of the same name, and makes delightful use of ‘le joli’, i.e. ‘the pretty’, in music – vivacious themes decked out in ingenious orchestration – already mastered by Léo Delibes in Coppélia.

Since winning the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, Denis Matsuev has established a reputation as one of Russia’s leading pianists. His début release on the Mariinsky label featuring Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3 and Paganini Variations, received widespread acclaim. His second Mariinsky release featured piano concerts by Shostakovich and Shchedrin, which was awarded Clef du Mois by ResMusica and ***** by Audiophile Audition. For his third release, Matsuev turns to the music of Tchaikovsky, with the two Piano Concertos. His first Piano Concerto is one of his most popular works: Tchaikovsky balances core motivic elements with a sense of lyrical spontaneity to create a technically challenging but instantly appealing work.

The Piano Concerto No.2 was dedicated to pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, with whom the composer had a close working relationship. Tchaikovsky wrote, “I want to dedicate it to N. G. Rubinstein in recognition of his magnificent playing of my First Concerto and of my Sonata, which left me in utter rapture after he performed it for me in Moscow.” After a tremendous piano cadenza in the first movement, Tchaikovsky allows other instruments to shine, with prominent solos for violin and cello in the second movement.

Other Tchaikovsky recordings on the Mariinsky label include a DVD/Bluray release of his last three symphonies, and 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition winner Daniil Trifonov’s interpretation of the first Piano Concerto on SACD.

In March and April Denis Matsuev joins the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev for a European tour, with concerts in London, Paris and Turin.
