Ustad Zahiruddin Dagar and Ustad Faiyazuddin Dagar are known as Dagar Brothers Junior as they are the two youngest of the four sons of the great Dhrupadiya Nasiruddin Dagar, the eldest two being Moinuddin and Aminuddin Dagar, well known as the famous Dagar Brothers.
On October 14 2022 we release a unique recording of Raag Multani that they recorded at Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar’s house in Chembur, Bombay in 1968 in which he accompanied them on tabla! A few days after this recording, on January 19th, they gave a private concert at Indorkar’s house in the neighbourhood accompanied by the great Ravi Bellare and this concert will be released digitally in 2023 on three separate dates as they did three long ragas that evening.

The Canadian contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux, with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and its Artistic and Music Director Kazuki Yamada, interprets the now ‘traditional’ recorded pairing of two sumptuous, escapist French song cycles: Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’été and Ravel’s Shéhérazade. Complementing them both musically and thematically is a third, less frequently heard cycle by another great French composer, Camille Saint-Saëns: his Mélodies Persanes (Persian Songs). “From the first note to the last, Lemieux’s interpretation of the Berlioz was exemplary …” wrote Bachtrack when she performed Les Nuits d’été in Paris. “From the depths of her lower register to her shimmering high notes, she traced a supple trajectory through the work, phrasing with amplitude and missing no opportunity for word-painting.”
Palazzetto Bru Zane’s new edition of the cycle Saint-Saëns: Mélodies Persanes presented here, is a premiere recording, it gathers these orchestrations of the songs but restores the original piano-vocal order, repurposing two brief interludes from Nuit Persane to serve as an orchestral introduction and transition.

Supplementary to his legendary Beethoven cycles for Decca are Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt’s recordings for Philips, Mercury, Deutsche Grammophon and Accord. They date from 1944 (Sutermeister) to 1972, when he made his last recording, fittingly by Mozart (Die Gärtnerin aus Liebe) a composer whom he revered above all: “We are too intimate friends … I can’t even explain what it is I feel when I listen to his music, that makes my eyes damp and my breath catch. … At the end of my life I should like to dissolve myself completely in Mozart’s music.”

Leading off with the heavy, acid guitar-drenched “With My Mind,” Kingston Wall starts things off in a stirring fashion. Unfortunately, the rest of the album, while it does have its moments, doesn’t quite live up to the promise of this track. The band is very tight and intense in songs such as “I’m Not the One,” but the chanted “I’m not the one to blame/Not the one to blame!” makes it a little hard to take the track seriously. Similarly, the cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire” is sung with such over-the-top exuberance, that it makes it a little funny (assumingly unintentional). Throughout the album, though, the musicianship is stellar, as evidenced on “Nepal” (a staple of their live shows). This first album would be the band’s rawest. The reissue with bonus disc includes a live show from 1991, with mostly cover songs, some expected (“Purple Haze”), some unexpected (“Call Me the Breeze,” “Rocky Raccoon”).

The Durutti Column viola-playing master – a composer and arranger for the likes of U2, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel and Blur, as well as co-founder with Tony Wilson of the Factory Classical label – had been composing music spontaneously, instinctively, when the idea of Tree arrived. The album came from a desire in John Metcalfe to write at scale – perhaps a natural reaction for a composer writing out of the silences and solitude of our recent pandemic years.

After a programme of works thematically spun around Renaissance composer John Dowland’s Lachrimae Pavans (ECM 2189), violinist John Holloway and his ensemble now devote their art to Baroque composer Henry Purcell’s “fantazias”. Commenting on the fantasias in his detailed liner note, Holloway remarks how “it is tempting to see their brilliant distillation of the very best of Byrd, Lawes, Jenkins and Locke as a personal farewell to a kind of music, which in Purcell’s own chamber music would soon be superseded by sonatas.” Purcell’s fantasias are regarded as some of the finest and most intricately wrought works in the genre, embracing profound counterpoint and a great command of all of the polyphonal techniques of the time. Holloway and the ensemble’s reading of the three- and four-part fantasias offers deep insight into the compositions’ fabric, revealing a fresh perspective of a composer with, as Holloway notes, “an extraordinary ability to walk the fine line between joy and sorrow, to beautifully express the melancholy which was such a characteristic mood of his times.”
