Talk Talk – The Colour Of Spring (1986) [SACD 2003] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Talk Talk – The Colour Of Spring (1986) [SACD 2003]
PS3 Rip | ISO | SACD DST64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 45:38 minutes | Scans included | 893 MB
or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | Scans included | 964 MB

With It’s My Life, Talk Talk proved that they could pull off an entire album of strong material. With The Colour of Spring, they took it one step further, moving to a near-concept song cycle, following the emotional ups and downs of relationships and pondering life in general. Musically, they built on the experimental direction of the previous album with interesting rhythms, sweeping orchestration, complex arrangements, and even a children’s chorus to create an evocative, hypnotic groove. Though the songs were catchier on the earlier efforts and the ambient experimentation was more fully achieved later on, The Colour of Spring succeeded in marrying the two ideas into one unique sound for their most thoroughly satisfying album.

Talk Talk – Spirit Of Eden (1988) [SACD 2003] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Compare Spirit of Eden with any other previous release in the Talk Talk catalog, and it’s almost impossible to believe it’s the work of the same band — exchanging electronics for live, organic sounds and rejecting structure in favor of mood and atmosphere, the album is an unprecedented breakthrough, a musical and emotional catharsis of immense power. Mark Hollis’ songs exist far outside of the pop idiom, drawing instead on ambient textures, jazz-like arrangements, and avant-garde accents; for all of their intricacy and delicate beauty, compositions like “Inheritance” and “I Believe in You” also possess an elemental strength — Hollis’ oblique lyrics speak to themes of loss and redemption with understated grace, and his hauntingly poignant vocals evoke wrenching spiritual turmoil tempered with unflagging hope. A singular musical experience.

Tara Jane O’Neil describes her eighth solo album as a singer/songwriter endeavor. At the invitation and design of Mark Greenberg (The Coctails), she recorded, mostly live, half of the record at Wilco’s Loft Studio in Chicago with a band that included James Elkington, Gerald Dowd, Nick Macri, and Greenberg himself. The other half was made in O’Neil’s home studio in California with Devin Hoff, Wilder Zoby, Walt McClements and string supervisor Jim James. The album also features the voices of Chris Cohen, Carolyn Pennypacker-Riggs and Joan Shelley. O’Neil herself plays guitar, bass and percussion. A founding member of Rodan, The Sonora Pine, amongst other ensembles, O’Neil has also collaborated on recordings and stages with Papa M, Michael Hurley, Little Wings, Marisa Anderson, Catherine Irwin, Mirah, Mount Eerie, and many, many others. She’s performed at clubs, galleries, and DIY spaces around the world and venues such as the Centre de Pompdou, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and All Tomorrow’s Parties, while also starring in the cult classic film Half-Cocked. “All I wanted to do was to get to Sacramento to play the topless bars,” recalls tower of power founder and tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo about his band’s early days in the late ’60s. Clearly, the funk horn ensemble has accomplished much more than that. A major influence on fusion and smooth jazz, the 10-piece band has recorded albums for Epic, Columbia, and Warner Bros. and continues to tour the summer jazz-festival circuit. Tower’s new album, Soul Vaccination: Tower of Power Live, features 15 of the band’s most popular songs as recorded during a 1998 world tour. Half of the tunes were recorded at the Fillmore in San Francisco, where the band performed frequently back in the day.

Toto – Toto IV (1982) [Reissue 2002] MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

It was do or die for Toto on the group’s fourth album, and they rose to the challenge. Largely dispensing with the anonymous studio rock that had characterized their first three releases, the band worked harder on its melodies, made sure its simple lyrics treated romantic subjects, augmented Bobby Kimball’s vocals by having other group members sing, brought in ringers like Timothy B. Schmit, and slowed down the tempo to what came to be known as “power ballad” pace. Most of all, they wrote some hit songs: “Rosanna,” the old story of a lovelorn lyric matched to a bouncy beat, was the gold, Top Ten comeback single accompanying the album release; “Make Believe” made the Top 30; and then, surprisingly, “Africa” hit number one ten months after the album’s release. The members of Toto may have more relatives who are NARAS voters than any other group, but that still doesn’t explain the sweep they achieved at the Grammys, winning six, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year (for “Rosanna”). Predictably, rock critics howled, but the Grammys helped set up the fourth single, “I Won’t Hold You Back,” another soft rock smash and Top Ten hit. As a result, Toto IV was both the group’s comeback and its peak; it remains a definitive album of slick L.A. pop for the early ’80s and Toto’s best and most consistent record. Having made it, the members happily went back to sessions, where they helped write and record Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
