Thomas Oliver represents the openness of the mind and the heart, both as a musician and as a human. He touches people’s lives in all corners of the globe as he draws a connection between various forms of music that could otherwise be considered polar opposites. His warm demeanor and story-telling on stage are as much a part of his musical identity as his unmistakable falsetto-singing range, his award-winning songwriting (he was awarded the APRA Silver Scroll (Song Of The Year) – award in New Zealand in 2016), his world-renowned touch on the lap-slide guitar, or his celebrated vocal contributions to the genre of Drum & Bass music (for which he was recently a finalist for the Best Vocalist Award at the Drum & Bass Arena Awards). “The Brightest light” is a combination of Soul, Roots, Folk and Pop, but it certainly carries some of the energy and diversity of Berlin. “I had set out to write a new record in New Zealand where I lived, but I had the distinct sense that I needed to change my surroundings in order to write music that was inspired in a different way. So I moved to Berlin, Germany, and set up a studio soon after completing a 19-date European tour. Berlin is unconventional, colourful, and sometimes challenging, which is what made it the perfect place to base myself while I wrote this music. I started writing songs as soon as I touched down; I couldn’t help it.” After multiple tours and support shows of artist such as Fat Freddy’s Drop, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton and Xavier Rudd, the start of 2020 will see more new music from ‘The Brightest Light’, until its release on March 6th, with full-band touring across Europe, New Zealand and Australia. Tip for enthusiasts of: Gary Clark Jr, Son Little and Amos Lee.

This album is an opportunity to pay tribute to folk music, to the traditional dances and songs that inspire a large part of the violin repertory. Between the end of the Nineteenth Century and the first half of the Twentieth, a number of composers succeeded in transmitting through their music powerful, emotionally charged impressions, resulting from their travels and their encounters with certain musical traditions, traditional melodies, rhythms and specific harmonies.

Orpheus and his lyre: how to better picture the power of music? Orpheus could move stones to tears, he even moved to pity the gates of death. Music overturns the world, this the composers of the English Renaissance knew very well. Even more, music is the soul of the world, a unifying force. Thomas Hobbs celebrates the many facets of music in lutesongs, in particular those of by T. Campion and J. Danyel. It is not solely the lute which accompanies the song, but also less frequently heard instruments such as the lyra viol, the bandora, the orpharion. With their generous strings, these instruments bring to the ears the sound of Orpheus’ magical lyre.

Although somewhat unimaginatively titled, 1973’s Beach Boys in Concert is significantly more than a hastily compiled live collection of hits. To the contrary, the set includes highlights from the band’s earliest sides (“Surfer Girl”) through to the groundbreaking Smile era (“Good Vibrations” and “Heroes and Villains”) as well as more concurrent material (“Sail On Sailor” and “Marcella”). These are complemented by a generous representation of deeper cuts including “You Still Believe in Me” from Pet Sounds, “Let the Wind Blow” from Wild Honey (1968), as well as later tracks like “Leaving This Town” and “Funky Pretty.” The song “We Got Love” was originally recorded and penciled in for inclusion on Holland, but the laid-back rocker didn’t make that release and instead makes its debut here.

Released in late 1967, Wild Honey marks the first time the Beach Boys had incorporated elements of soul and R&B into their classic California sound. As the follow-up to the ill-fated and poorly received (at the time) Smiley Smile, there was a lot of pressure on the band to rebound with a hit and Wild Honey did the trick very nicely, earning rave reviews and going on to become one of the most respected and acclaimed Beach Boys albums.

Thomas Grimmonprez writes: The big wheel. The wheel that reminds us of our relationship to movement and time. The freewheel of letting go, of the suspended moment. The wheel that turns round in a square world. The symbolic nature of the big wheel inspires myths and sacred themes; it refers to the idea of perfection, like the circle; it refers above all to movement, evolution, what is to come. It is also a new beginning, perpetual creation. It was this idea of a cycle and a new beginning that stimulated me to compose this album; a new repertory with longstanding companions. After the album Kaléidoscope, released in October 2016, my desire to reveal my sonic identity further now leads me to continue my journey in the quartet form. This new project takes flight thanks to the talent of musicians free of all aesthetic dogmatism, who have consented to place their talent at the service of my compositions in order to cast light on these various tableaux in sound. By combining four strong personalities who share the same artistic attitude, I hope to be able to invite the listener to travel within my universe. It was our long friendship that prompted me to write this repertory.

On the album “Bach Mirror” the French pianist Thomas Enhco and marimba player Vassilena Serafimova give well-known and less well-known works by Johann Sebastian Bach an innovative sound. Pieces such as the Prelude No. 2 from the Well-Tempered Clavier or the Air from the orchestral suite No. 3 sound new and fresh in the unusual instrumentation of piano and marimba. With their sound painting arrangements, Thomas Enhco and Vassilena Serafimova expose Bach’s harmonic-melodic work structures and enable the audience to gain new perspectives on the architecture of his unique compositions.
