One the all time great funky albums of the 70s – a mad little record with a sense of rhythm and timing that was years ahead of its time! The Soul Searchers (along with Chuck Brown) later became known for their heavy-hitting Go Go work at the end of the decade – but here, they’re a really free-thinking outfit with a lot of jazz in their funk – and a willingness to change up the beats and timings in ways that push the record miles ahead from an average funk outing. Tracks swirl around with an amazing intensity – supported by guitar work from Brown, organ from Hilton Felton, and some really great horns from Don Tillery and Lloyd Pinchback. The album features a wonderful remake of “Think” – plus the great originals “1993”, “Soul To The People”, “Blowout”, and “We The People”.

A top-notch studio guitarist who initially garnered his reputation as one of the Philly soul stalwarts associated with Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International recording studios, James Herb Smith was also often called in to duty as a background vocalist, and appears prominently on classic albums by such Philly Soul legends as Jerry Butler, The Stylistics, MFSB, Patti LaBelle, Dexter Wansel, Billy Paul, Jean Carne, Donnie Hathaway and countless others in and outside of the Philly Soul realm. Utilizing the versatility of The Society Hill Orchestra in conjunction with the Ingram Family band under the watchful eye of legendary Philly Soul producer Butch Ingram, Herb Smith has successfully recorded a modern rhythm & blues classic that stands as a testament to the immense appeal of Archie Bell & The Drells distinctive sound. Although Archie Bell & The Drells were originally from Houston, they became one of the main acts of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff’s Philadelphia International Records, and thus became associated with the Philly Soul sound. The lautten compagney Berlin undertakes special musical “winter journeys” under its founder and director Wolfgang Katschner. The music is largely from the 17th century with works by Philipp Heinrich Erlebach, Andreas Hammerschmidt, Michael Praetorius, Heinrich Schütz and Johann Hermann Schein. They are joined by tunes or folk songs such as “Ach bittrer Winter, wie bist Du kalt” and the longing for spring the song “So treiben wir den Winter aus”, which the lautten compagney has arranged for its instrumentation.

Boston doesn’t get enough credit as a jazz town, from the days of the Storyville club and Cambridge-based Transition label to the star factory that is Berklee College of Music, the city stands tall against more celebrated places like Chicago and Detroit. One big part of that high level of creative output is Jerry Bergonzi who, for this date, leads his most Bostonian band in recent memory, reuniting with trumpeter pal Phil Grenadier and drummer Luther Gray. Bassist Harvie S came up from New York for the gig and it was he who suggested guitarist Sheryl Bailey for the album. She completes the Boston connection with her position as the Assistant Chair of Berklee’s legendary Guitar Department.
“To work with Jerry and study and perform his music is the definition of a dream come true,” says Bailey who has played with artists ranging from Ken Peplowski to Shingo Okudaira. Here, Bergonzi has convened a fine band for a compelling album, another feather in Boston’s tricorn hat.
