Trevor Mires, Ryan Quigley & Paul Booth – Trypl (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 55:36 minutes | 620 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Ubuntu Music

TRYPL were born out of the friendship of trombonist Trevor Mires (Jamiroquai, George Benson, Michel Legrand…), trumpet player Ryan Quigley (Tim Garland, George Michael, Eddie Reader..) and saxophonist Paul Booth (Jamiroquai, Incognito, Brand New Heavies…) and their endless love for the merging of jazz and latino rhythms. The first album from this trio was recorded in a rural studio and inspired by the legendary Steve Winwood among some high calibre friends: the pianist Alex Wilson, bassist Dimitris Christopoulos, percussionist Edwin Sanz and drummers Tristan Banks and Davide Giovannni. The Brits make us forget their origins as they perfectly reawaken their mastery of mambo, salsa and seemingly intuitive salsa. The album begins with an iconic composition and nod towards Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Bojo, and closes with another previously unreleased track Here We Go. With the exception of a wild adaptation of the Cuban classic Tres Palabras, sang all over the American continent for generations (Omara Portuondo, Nat King Cole, Enrique Iglesias), this first album, stuffed with incredible performances is an unstoppable love letter to Caliente dance. – Benjamin MiNiMuM

When I lived in San Francisco, I had the perfect set up for a poor young songwriter – a cold unfinished room in the backyard of an old house on 40th and Balboa. To enter I had to walk through the garage and take one step outside into the backyard. It was quiet, close to the beach, and cheap. I lived there for many years. I loved it. I’d be gone for weeks at a time playing with the band, but that room, my ‘garden shed’, was home port and safe harbor. It had two large old fashioned windows, painted shut. I had my piano set up beneath them and I would stare into the fog while I played. I wrote a lot of songs in that room. I eventually had to let the place go but I took with me one last collection of songs. The first bits were recorded in that room. I carried them around with me for sometime, adding to them, getting help from my friends. Eventually Davey (who lived right above me in that old house) got a hold of these recordings and took them down to Nashville. He put it all together for me while my life transitioned, learning how to make wine and taking care of horses. These are the last songs from that garden shed. It’s been a long journey, with no end in sight .

10/5 is the outcome of a cross-contamination stemming from different genres and styles, reflecting Alessandro Bianchini’s musical education: from the typical academicism of classical music to improvisation, through the sounds of traditional jazz. These elements mark indelibly the vibraphonist’s aesthetics and musical language, which are then embellished by a constant and meticulous search for detail, as such allowing his compositions to be identified.

The Tallis Scholars – Allegri’s Miserere & Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli (2007) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Allegri’s Miserere should, by all the laws of natural selection, have been consigned to the rubbish bin of musical history years ago. At root, it’s a simple plainchant setting of Psalm 51, the verses sung alternately by five-part choir, a cantor (a role performed here with delicious grace by Andrew Carwood) and a quartet of soloists (on this recording placed at a distance to re-create the spatial effect of the choir gallery in the Sistine Chapel). That it has not just survived the passage of time but stands today as one of the most popular pieces of late-Renaissance Italian church music – there are well over 50 currently available recordings of it, while The Tallis Scholars alone claim to have performed it over 300 times – is due almost entirely to a single note, a top C, sung by the first soprano soloist in the five quartet verses.

Dupuis is accompanied by the musicians of the Quatuor Claudel-Canimex, who play Barber’s famous Adagio in its original version for string quartet.

Prakash has collaborated with a diverse range of innovative artists, who have praised him as a “visionary artist that has found a way to speak to everyone while speaking in his own language” (Tigran Hamasyan) who “makes art that truly reflects the mixes and contradictions, the conflicts and confluences of our lives” (Anoushka Shankar) and is known for his “strong, [and] powerful voice” (Ravi Shankar). On ISOLASHUN, Prakash explores the weight of privilege and the boundaries of Karnatik tradition by challenging its customary themes of beauty, devotion, and celebration with those of turmoil, angst, pain, anger, and protest.

Often compared to Coldplay and Travis, Turin Brakes are a English duo inspired by folk and progressive rock hailing from Balham, London. “Lost Property” is the band’s seventh full-length studio release, produced with Ali Staton. Fifteen years since their debut, Turin Brakes’ tangled, twisty take on acoustic rock sounds confident rather than beleaguered or battered by age.

With Ether Song which came out in 2003, Turin Brakes quickly became a cult group for lovers of indie pop filtered through folk. A speciality of this London group led by Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, is fine melodic tapestries which, while not necessarily brimming with revolutionary originality, were certainly charming enough… In 2018 and after weathering many storms, Turin Brakes were finally able to put the finishing touches to an eighth album, which centres on lovingly-worked vocal harmonies and melodic frameworks. Early fans, like those who love Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac or James Taylor will certainly appreciate it…

As her fortieth birthday approaches, has Merrill Garbus finally decided to tidy her room? The unclassifiable, genial and completely mad Mrs. tUnE-yArDs nicely develops her wanderings in the world of indie DIY with her fourth album which only sounds like… Merrill Garbus! Eclectic and gifted, the American once again draws her inspiration from rhythmic guitar sounds coming from almost everywhere, that she integrates with her accomplice, bass player and producer Nate Brenner, into her spicy and suitably disconcerting cocktail. It’s pop, ethno, folk, funky, in short it’s impish, mad, unpredictable, smart, funny and, above all, it stops at nothing! Except that this time, the compositions follow one another with more fluidity and even include more groovy, or even disco, sounds. At the root of this slight mutation is a six-month break taken by Garbus for a meditation retreat. Her music doesn’t come out of it any quieter or more civilized, not at all! It just seems more obvious, more natural. Anyway, with I can feel you creep into my private life, tUnE-yArDs makes the artsy pop tastier than ever.
