A couple of years back, UK-based House and Soul DJ Jerry Frempong’s wife Kate was doing a Spring -clean at the family home. At the bottom of the garden, in among a pile of rusty garden tools and so on, she discovered a couple of mysterious bin-bags. She was about to assign them to the skip with everything else, but a sixth sense persuaded her to check the contents. It was a huge pile of rare soul, funk, disco, boogie and- yes – Ghana Highlife records. Kate brought this to the attention of Jerry, who immediately understood the significance of the treasure trove.

Matthew Sheens Quartet: Perth debut of the pianist’s new work Written in the Dark.
For pianist and composer Matthew Sheens, an accident inspired a new composition, which tonight has its Perth debut. Written in the Dark is a through-composed piece written while Sheens was convalescing after a bike crash that left him with a broken leg and hand. Comprised of 10 sections, this piece explores many different musical terrains, while sustaining compositional ideas throughout. While the work can be described as a technically demanding weird dream, there is still huge scope for improvisation by the entire quartet. Featuring Hugh Stuckey (guitar), Sam Anning (bass) and Tim Firth (drums), this performance ties up Sheens’ Australian album release tour.

Quickly emerging young Texas musician Mathias Lattin won 1st place at the 2023 International Blues Challenge in the band category and the Best Guitarist Award at 20 years old. A graduate of the acclaimed Kinder High School for Performing and Visual Arts magnet program, Mathias came up quickly in the Houston scene, playing Jonn Del Toro Richardson’s blues jams when he was 13, and later joining Keesha Pratt’s band. Houstonites like Annika Chambers and Shawn Allen served as mentors and inspiration. His training as a jazz guitarist is reflected in his soulful blues, jazz-inflected chords, and funky bass lines. Mathias wrote and produced all the songs on UP NEXT. This fall Mathias is looking forward to getting out on the road with his band in support of the new record, with dates including the Big Blues Bender and the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise.

Celebrated folk and blues artist Margret RoadKnight has announced she’ll be launching her new album LONG TIME… at Melbourne’s Wheeler Centre next month. The launch also serves as RoadKnight’s 80th birthday party and a celebration of the underground folkie’s 60th anniversary of performing and recording music.
RoadKnight will appear at the Wheeler Centre on Wednesday, 29th November, for an evening of live performance, stories, image and audio presentations, and more. The compilation album LONG TIME… pulls together the “second act” of RoadKnight’s career, featuring recordings from 1988 to 2023.

Michael A. Muller is a multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles, best known for his work with Balmorhea (Deutsche Grammophon) which he co-founded in 2006.
He began his dedicated solo works in 2019 with Lower River, a textural and meditative debut album that toured as a multi-disciplinary exhibit from Berlin to Los Angeles. The collaborative Lower River Reworks followed, featuring Bing & Ruth, Duane Pitre, and Masayoshi Fujita among others. Since, he has created site-specific work at artist residencies and widened his output by placing songs and creating scores for dozens of commercials, short films, documentaries, and remixing material from neoclassical pianists Michael Price and Daigo Hanada and the Belgian black metal group Oathbreaker.
Muller is currently composing and arranging for both new full-length Balmorhea and solo albums, as well as scoring several film and multi-media projects throughout 2022.

You can feel that heat off the Sunset Strip and see that hair in the wind as Dokken bring their timeless convertible Ferrari rock ‘n’ roll power to the table with ‘Heaven Comes Down’, an unapologetic celebration of everything Dokken do best. You want to rock? Sink your teeth into ‘Fugitive’, which rides some shimmering guitar work courtesy of Jon Levin, Don Dokken imploring that ‘I’m a fugitive from life’, and if you want ballads, head on over to ‘I’ll Never Give Up’, hanging on that Coliseum chorus, Levin laying down a landmark solo. The pattern of ‘Heaven Comes Down’ never falters in delivering the goods on both sides of the fence. ‘Just Like a Rose’ brings the Pacific Coast Highway into vision with its smooth, effortlessly-driven gears, and ‘Saving Grace’ carries a mystical malevolence. But it is closer ‘Santa Fe’ which is perhaps the most revealing, spare yet glorious moment, Don Dokken opening up with what amounts to a ‘life-moment biography’, a spartan acoustic arrangement allowing the rich yet road-driven vocals to frame what might well prove to be the defining moment of Dokken’s career. Mixed by Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa) and produced by Bill Palmer and Don Dokken, fans will love it, neutrals will be wonderfully surprised by some of the ingredients within ‘Heaven Comes Down’.

ICOT is a non-profit organisation founded in 2011 by five Toronto-based composers and musicians with the mission of creating new works that bridge Canadian and Iranian culture through music and art. ICOT’s current members are Saman Shahi (executive director), Keyan Emami (artistic director), and Maziar Heidari (music director). ICOT has produced two operas, two ballets, twelve orchestral works, dozens of chamber works and vocal works, as well as three calls for scores that allowed ICOT to collaborate with over twenty composers from eight different countries. ICOT’s music has been performed by Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra, Symphony on the Bay, Soundstreams, and Ton Beau String Quartet and has taken part in Toronto Symphony’s 2022 Open House, Tirgan Festival, 2017 Ottawa Chamberfest, and Hamilton Philharmonic’s 2014 “What Next” Festival. ICOT’s first commercial recording, Persian Piano Night, was released in 2018 by Pardis Records.
