Played with its intended finale, Beethoven’s String Quartet Op.130 represents one of the summits of the composer’s creative output. The Lindsays have lived with this music for a long time, and this intimate knowledge of the musical argument shines through this account. Every great quartet has attempted this piece, and here the Lindsays add their own interpretative stamp in no uncertain terms. In a piece which encompasses an entire lifetime of emotions, it is fitting that they are not afraid to stretch the music to its fullest extent: the second movement is a true Presto, scampering along at a tremendous rate, and the contrasts of the first movement are given their full due. They are at their finest in the mighty “Grosse Fuge” finale. Here Beethoven stretches quartet writing to its very limits (it still sounds modern, even today). The Lindsays display furious concentration and determination, while bringing an otherworldly quality to some of the quieter passages. They certainly refuse to apologise for the striking, sparse textures and the stark juxtapositions: the result is nothing less than triumphant. The alternative movement Beethoven provided because of the extreme demands of the “Grosse Fuge” is included on the disc along with a second performance of the preceding Cavatina.

An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B-3 organ for over five decades, he has been featured on over seventy albums, and has recorded and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of the greatest jazz, blues and R&B giants in the industry. His unpredictable, insatiable musical taste illustrates that no genre is safe, as Lonnie has recorded everything from covers of the Beatles, the Stylistics and the Eurythmics, to tribute albums of Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane and Beck–all by employing ensembles ranging from a trio to a fifteen-piece big band. Moreover, many of Doc’s recent compositions reflect dramatic ethereal qualities and orchestration that elicit movie scores or soundtracks.

Bassist Lonnie Plaxico is perhaps best known for his associations with Greg Osby & M-Base, & for being the long-time bassist for Cassandra Wilson. He was the leader of several recordings made for the now static Muse label in the ’80s & ’90s. On January 29, 2003, Plaxico was leading an energetically funky sextet at New York City’s Jazz Standard. The pieces populating this live disc are closer to Plaxico’s Art Blakey experience than to his M-Base involvement. That is to say that this is superb contemporary hard bop. The spirit & association of Bu is big, very big. Plaxico’s group mimics the greatest of Blakey Band setups with a trumpet/tenor front on a standard piano trio platform (with added percussion).

“Beauty & The Beat” is something very different than your ordinary rock show, let alone your ordinary classic concert. It’s music played in an unorthodox manner, it’s the performance of a wide range of classical pieces and rock songs together with an orchestra and choir. It strikes you with awe. Originally planned as a one-time event – the first performance was already held in 2011, the show was too successful with fans and critics to simply never happen again. In spring 2013, Tarja Turunen and drummer Mike Terrana, who is also part of her current live band, toured throughout the world, from Poland over Russia to Mexico. During this tour, the live CD, DVD and Blu-ray was recorded in stunning HD. “Beauty & The Beat”‘s music ranges from immortal classic music pieces ranging from Bach, Strauss and Mozart to Rossini, and doesn’t neglect pure rock music with songs from Led Zeppelin, Queen and Tarja’s as well as Mike’s own pieces. All combined with an enormous orchestra sound, energetic drums and Tarja’s angelic voice. Tarja and Mike complement each other musically. Whereas Mike bangs his drums like a mad man, Tarja shines with her crystal clear voice and incredible stage presence all lulled with the warm, full sound of an orchestra. Tarja Turunen explains: “The idea of having a symphonic orchestra, choir and Mr. Terrana on drums was originally mine. I believe this kind of combination of instruments, particularlyplaying mainly classical music, is very unique. I have been making collaborations with orchestras before, but those concerts were different. Our main goal with this kind of concerts is that the younger audience experiences the beauty and power of a symphonic orchestra and choir. Hopefully it will serve as an introduction to classical music for some of our fans.” Mike Terrana jokingly adds: “It’s obvious that I provide the BEAT & Tarja provides the BEAUTY.”

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:08:27 minutes | 1,08 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © BIS

After many acclaimed releases on BIS, most recently ‘Sounds and Sweet Airs – A Shakespeare Songbook’ (BIS-2653), Carolyn Sampson’s latest recital with Joseph Middleton lives up to its name: it is an eloquent testimony to the English soprano’s love of her art. This programme artfully blends well-known and lesser-known lieder by German and Austrian masters such as Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Richard Strauss and Hugo Wolf with French songs by Gounod, Poulenc and Franck, as well as works by Anglo-Saxon composers such as Hubert Parry, Samuel Barber and Ivor Gurney. Female composers are not forgotten, with rarely-performed songs by Rita Strohl based on slightly risque poems by Pierre Louys, music by Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Kaija Saariaho – who has recently passed away – and Deborah Pritchard, whose song presented here was composed especially for Sampson. And while Leonard Bernstein’s comically cheeky song ‘I hate music’, appears to be a call not to let music take itself too seriously, Errollyn Wallen’s ‘Peace on Earth’, which concludes the album, invokes calm and encourages us to find peace, a message that seems more relevant today than ever.

It has been said that Anders Nordentoft’s music offers its listeners ‘an outstretched hand.’ His works are refreshingly free of dogma and take direct communication as their starting point, whether through clear narrative, sensual lyricism or an almost physical impulse that seizes the attention. The composer once claimed he set out to create music both ordinary and fantastic at the same time, like a normal day of the week. As demonstrated in the trio of delicate, gentle and recent sinfonietta pieces within this release, Nordentoft has displayed remarkable discipline concerning the structural coherence of his music, all the while imbuing it to convey the broader essence of life on Earth.
