The evolution of Swampmeat Family Band continues apace. When the Birmingham outfit released their incendiary third album, Muck, three years ago, it marked the culmination of the kind of vision that frontman Dan Finnemore had always had for them; having returned from the U.S. after a spell as a key member of Philadelphia rockers Low Cut Connie, he was burning with ideas and inspiration, channeling a renewed creative energy into a new-look version of the garage band he’d formed, as simply Swampmeat, with drummer T-Bird Jones in 2006. Muck certainly felt like a family affair, one that saw the group expand to a five-piece and broaden their musical palette, boldening their bolshier side with brass, lending their forays into country some authenticity with the addition of pedal steel and, by welcoming vocalist Joni Coyne into the fold, providing Finnemore with a new foil. The new accoutrements came together to form the basis of Swampmeat 2.0, a slicker, sharper band anchored by Finnemore’s handsome arrangements and melodic sensibilities. Polish Your Old Halo continues Finnemore’s hot vein of songwriting form with Muck and capitalises upon that album’s creative momentum, without being afraid to try new things and remove old ones; the brass and strings that made it on to Muck have been left to one side, propelling Finnemore’s writing to the fore. The freewheeling blues rock that came to define their last album is still alive and well. But there’s also progression, something particularly evident in the album’s bookends; ‘Do It All’ brings the curtain up with juddering, synth-led punk energy, while closer ‘Plant Your Feet Correctly’ is a swooning acoustic cut, initially envisioned as having a string section but now presented in vulnerable, bare-bones fashion.

Ray Charles. A pioneer for music genres such as soul, jazz, blues, rhtyhm & blues. The man behind iconic songs such as Hallelujah, I love her so, Unchain My Heart and Georgia On My Mind. But also one of the first black and blind musicians to reach a large audience. He did not let his disability hinder him, because Charles became blind at a young age. He was one of the first musicians to be accompanied (often) by a big band. And he is still one of the international artists who has performed the most at ‘our’ North Sea Jazz Festival. With music and personal anecdotes and stories, the musicians of the Sven Hammond Big Band tell why Charles was and still is a source of inspiration for them.

On the occasion of the bicentenary of Pauline Viardot’s birth in 2021, pianist Francisco Soriano set himself the task of making known one of the most interesting parts of Viardot’s work: her Spanish-inspired songs in various languages, many of them unpublished. He was helped by his fellow artists on this recording, soprano Natalia Labourdette and mezzo-soprano Helena Ressurreicao, as well as researchers Nicholas Zekulin and Andres Moreno Mengibar and musicologist Miguel Lopez Fernandez. This album represents the fruit of those labours.

In that apogee of polyphonic vocal music, the 16th century, Roland de Lassus (Mons c. 1532-Munich 1594) is pre-eminent. So famous was he that by the time he was 34, Samuel Quickelberg had already written the biography of “the more than divine Orlando”, as the poet Ronsard called Lassus, and as early as 1560 had praised the fact that he regarded music and words as of equal importance. But beyond his mastery of polyphonic language, what clearly characterises Lassus is his ability to feel at home in all styles whether secular or sacred, serious or light-hearted. His impressive oeuvre, confined to the vocal domain, reveals a conception of music, which had long been cloistered and hierarchical. But the lute is an exceptional instrument with numerous special advantages: it is convenient to handle, easily transported, and able to play alone to accompany music in several parts at once; it can accompany singing or fit easily into ensembles. Thanks to its polyphonic capabilities, the lute can combine separately printed voice parts into vocal editions. Being the instrument of musical synthesis, the lute points the way to the development of instrumental music. In the Renaissance, lute music is divided into three groups: dance music, polyphonic vocal works in tablature form, and freer forms of music (fantasias or ricercars) often based on the same contrapuntal rules as vocal music. The recital in this CD illustrates all these different genres.

Béla Bartók and John Adams – the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra has chosen an unusual pairing for the third release on its own label. The orchestra and chief conductor Thomas Zehetmair play to one of their greatest strengths: pushing themselves to the limits in terms of creativity. In Bartók’s Divertimento for string orchestra, the folk motifs dance dangerously close to the abyss. The contrasts between optimism and a premonition of doom are striking – Bartók composed the piece in the summer of 1939. In John Adams’ “Shaker Loops”, the extremes oscillate between lucid pauses and rousing outbursts. This recording makes it impressively clear that this popular work of “minimal music” is not so minimal after all, but contains complex arcs of tension and transitions.

Closer investigation of the roots and history of the Quartet, which was composed in 1824, reveals traces of all three of the so-called fine arts. The title “Death and the Maiden” reaches far back into the history of art. In the early 16th century, Hans Baldung Grien produced particularly impressive paintings and drawings on the theme of confrontation between life and death, symbolically embodied by a young girl and a skeleton. Published in 1774, the poem by Matthias Claudius succinctly presents the encounter in two verses that engage in mutual dialogue: on the one hand, the young woman in fear of death, and on the other, the skeletal man, whom Claudius transforms into an entirely positive figure through his soothing words.

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to welcome Streetlight to the label family for the release of their new album, “Ignition”. An AOR/Melodic Rock band from Jonkoping, Sweden, Streetlight stays true to the genre, delivering distinctive melodies, punchy choruses and strong hooks. Influenced heavily by bands like Journey, Toto, Kansas and Def Leppard, Streetlight creates music that is fun to listen to, melodic and guitar driven, with a sound that reminds you of the times when AOR was at its peak. But Streetlight does not see melodic rock as just a relic from the past. It’s more than nostalgia and music for the here and now.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a prominent composer, pianist, organist, conductor, teacher, altruistic and generous supporter of musicians and, according to Schumann, “the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most brilliant musician, the one who most clearly sees through the contradictions of the age and for the first time reconciles them.”

The masterpieces on this album are not often recorded and most of them are rarely performed live. They demand virtuosic technique of the highest order, and at the same time are deeply emotional. They mesmerize by tremendous amount of emotional nuances, sound textures and coloration, ranging from poetic intimacy and serene meditation to tragedy and overwhelming drama.

On his third voyage as Skyway Man, artist + producer James Wallace is still seeking answers beyond the stars and still coming back with more questions in the form of ten brilliant songs. On its surface, ‘Flight of the Long Distance Healer’ registers as another concept album replete with aliens and alternative philosophy, but this time around, Wallace coats the glass with a vital layer of self-reflection. Like a West Coast Dr. John—but more preoccupied with flying saucers than voodoo dolls—Skyway Man is in the business of opening new aural worlds, cracking open reality just enough to get the message through. ‘Flight of the Long Distance Healer’ sparkles and blinks, whispers and moans—hugely enjoyable music rendered in imaginative and gleaming style. There are hints of the polyrhythmic cinematic sensibility from Wallace’s contributions to the Joe Pera television series, rhythms of the Stax-inspired Spacebomb house band, and ripples of the current East Bay scene outside San Francisco. In a real showcase for the extended Skyway Man family, Wallace has coaxed personal and masterful performances from the likes of Erin Rae, Vetiver’s Andy Cabic, pedal steel wizard Spencer Cullum, Kelly McFarling, and more. Cooking up genres in such a way as to keep their nutrients intact; he packs prog, blues, glam rock, acid folk, swamp boogie, and future folk into a beautiful Martian bouillon.
