Anna Netrebko presents a dazzling array of iconic soprano arias by Verdi, Wagner, Strauss, Puccini, Cilea and Purcell in her first solo album in 5 years, a new recording and visual project featuring some of opera’s most powerful and moving arias.

Also available on vinyl as well as a deluxe edition, which features a Blu-ray music film about Anna Netrebko with behind the scenes footage and exclusive interviews filmed mainly at Teatro alla Scala in Milan right after the album recording, it explores Anna’s performative practices to embody different heroines and their stories. Framed by a genuine interview where Anna shares rare insights about herself, as well as the music, the film follows the four arias as they are translated to screen, each with a unique visual language and style. Aida, Lisa, Dido and Isolde come to life in a series of visual experimentations driven by powerful musical themes.

Who is this “lover of darkness” (Amata delle tenebre) in the title of Anna Netrebko’s latest album? He is the evil character who causes much female distress, who composers and librettists have taken malicious pleasure in portraying in their works. In her essay L’Opéra ou la défaite des femmes published in 1979 (Éditions Grasset), Catherine Clément had already dedicated her fascinating essay to those women who were assassinated, abandoned, despised, but also exalted throughout the long history of the opera.

It is these heroines that Anna Netrebko has chosen for this album which, in the deluxe hard copy version, includes a film dedicated to the Russian diva. Eagerly anticipated for five years, this new recital is conducted by Riccardo Chailly at the head of the Orchestra of La Scala in Milan. Netrebko’s exceptional voice shimmers with a thousand spells in its power and variety in these famous excerpts, onto which she imprints her own fiery temperament. It begins with Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur (« Poveri fiori ») and ends with la Mort d’Isolde (« Mild und leise ») consumed by love.

In between these two pieces, there is a feast of sublime arias from Dido and Aeneas (Purcell), The Queen of Spades (Tchaïkovsky) which she has recorded here for the first time, Ariadne’s great aria from Ariadne auf Naxos (Strauss), Aida and Don Carlo (Verdi), Tannhäuser and Lohengrin (Wagner), and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and Manon Lescaut. Nothing but beautiful singing, nothing but pleasure thanks to a voice that, over time, continues to blossom in its lower register and, what is more, is lovingly supported by the Milanese musicians. – François Hudry
