Ahmad Jamal (born Frederick Russell Jones; July 2 1930, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — April 16, 2023, Sheffield[d], Massachusetts) was an American jazz pianist, composer and teacher. According to music critic Stanley Crouch, he is the second most important in the development of jazz after Charlie Parker. For five decades, he was one of the most successful small band leaders in jazz.

A talented pianist, a skilled improviser, the author of numerous themes and compositions that are partially included in the repertoire of modern jazz musicians. At an early stage, he was influenced by Erroll Garner, and subsequently created an individual style, dynamic, temperamental, not devoid of virtuosity, but at the same time very refined, with a tendency to careful selection of expressive means, strict simplicity, and the organicity of the compositional whole.
