A founder member of Uganda’s rebellious ANTI-MASS collective (alongside Authentically Plastic and Turkana), Nsasi has built up a reputation with subversive DJ sets, smashing together slowed-down dance anthems and glossy R&B with propulsive fringe club experiments. This release from the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra’s archive pays tribute to two iconic works from the French symphonic repertoire of the late 19th century: Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D minor and Claude Debussy’s Nocturnes. Franck’s only symphony testifies to grandeur and French elegance, while Debussy’s Nocturnes capture the special atmosphere of the night with all its twilight colors and movements. In the remastered concert recordings from 1991 and 1983, legendary conductor Sergiu Celibidache interprets the two masterpieces with all their drama and finesse.

Milton Bland (October 3, 1930 – July 3, 1986), better known as Monk Higgins, was an American saxophonist born in Menifee, Arkansas.
Higgins’s biggest hits were the instrumental tracks “Who Dun It” (which reached #30 on the US R&B chart in 1966), and “Gotta Be Funky” (#22 on the US R&B chart). His instrumental “Ceatrix Did It” (1967) was the sign-off song for soul DJ Dr Rock on WMPP, East Chicago Heights, Illinois. Higgins worked with a variety of musicians including Gene Harris, Bobby Bland, The Chi-Lites, Junior Wells, Freddy Robinson, Muddy Waters, Cash McCall, Etta James, Blue Mitchell and The Three Sounds. His track “One Man Band (Plays All Alone)” was featured on the breakbeat compilation album, Ultimate Breaks and Beats.
Late in his career, Higgins performed with his band The Specialties as the featured artists at the television actress Marla Gibbs’s Los Angeles, California supper club, known as Marla’s Memory Lane Club.

Toivo Kuula (1883–1918) is one of the many composers who died at a tragically young age – 35 in his case, the result of an alcohol-fuelled pub brawl. The striking quality of the music he wrote during his short life points to the immensity of the loss not only to Finnish culture but to music more generally – as this first album of two, presenting his entire output of songs for solo voice and piano, makes abundantly clear. The range of moods captured here is striking, from cheery folksongs to dark existentialist contemplations of the meaning of life and death. The most passionate of them generate an operatic intensity in their short span, in a style that balances directness of expression and rich late-Romantic harmonies.

In the summer of 1819, Franz Schubert stayed in the Austrian town of Steyr where he began work on the composition of the five-movement Piano Quintet in A major, op. 114 (D 667) which was commissioned by the cellist Sylvester Paumgartner. The work was completed in the autumn and soon achieved great popularity under the name of Trout Quintet, which it owes to the Andantino fourth movement — a set of variations on the song of the same name.
