By its very nature, patriotism is vulgar: loud and proud, bombastic and sentimental, and wholeheartedly simple-minded. Or is that less a description of patriotism than a précis of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7? Written during the siege of Leningrad at the start of the Great Patriotic War, the Seventh is incredibly vulgar — critics at its American premiere savaged it for its banality — and incredibly effective. Its trite themes, its hackneyed harmonies, its straight-four rhythms, its primary color scoring, its “play it to the last row of the balcony” climaxes: all of these things are vulgar, but all of them are — in the right performance — overwhelmingly effective and altogether inspiring. In this performance by Valery Gergiev conducting the Kirov Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Seventh is incredibly vulgar and unbelievably loud, proud, bombastic, and sentimental. But it is also incredibly effective: the opening Allegretto is monstrously evil and absolutely devastating, the following Moderato is quiet but deadly, the following Adagio is heartbreakingly mournful, the closing Allegro non troppo is enormously celebratory, and the entire work is a colossal monument to patriotism. The conjoined Kirov and Rotterdam orchestras play with all the bloodthirsty enthusiasm of the Red Army taking Berlin in 1945, and Philips’ sound gets bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger until the walls of the Reichstag come crashing down. Vulgar or not, this is as great a recording of Shostakovich’s Seventh as there has ever been.

Specially written for Gergiev on the occasion of his 60th birthday, Rodion Shchedrin s ‘The Left-Hande’r is a comedy of Russians and Englishmen, new technology, old traditions and strong drink. The premiere was given by the Mariinsky Opera in St Petersburg in July 2013. Rodion Shchedrin is one of music s greatest living humourists and his work is laced with pitch-black irony and deadpan wit. Based on Nikolai Leskov s classical satirical novella of 1881, ‘The Tale of Cross-Eyed Lefty From Tula and the Steel Flea’, The Left-Hander is a gloriously wry exploration of Russia s relationship with the West in general and England in particular. The work recently received its UK premiere and was met with great acclaim. ‘The Left-Hander is a real comic opera of beguiling charm and fizzing vivacity, sharing its absurd grotesquerie with Shostakovich s The Nose, its tingling enchantment with Ravel s L enfant et les sortilèges and its wild mania with Barry s The Importance of Being Earnest. What grounds it, though, is an overwhelming, Russian nostalgia, an umbilical cord linking back to Mussorgsky.’ Classical-music.com ‘Gergiev conducted Shchedrin s 2013 score with understated intensity and musical humility, transporting us to the haunting world of Nikolai Leskov s original novella. Shchedrin s scoring is characteristically inventive and colourful… the forging music is witty and humorous.’ The Telegraph **** ‘Unexpectedly moving and stunningly well sung.’ The Financial Times ****

Few conductors turn in tightly controlled and coherent renditions of Gustav Mahler’s sprawling Symphony No. 7 in E minor, “Song of the Night,” and it often comes across either as a jumble of ironic distortions or as a strange riddle that needs to be deciphered. It would hardly seem as direct and powerful as its predecessor, the Symphony No. 6 in A minor, “Tragic,” which most conductors take at face value and frequently bring off with satisfactory results. Following his stunning 2008 success with his LSO Live recording of the Symphony No. 6 (one of the finest that work has ever received), Valery Gergiev presents the Symphony No. 7 in an equally convincing manner and avoids the unnecessary exaggerations that can make this work seem bizarre or incomprehensible. Gergiev is a straightforward interpreter, and he treats the symphony as any other big-hearted, post-Romantic masterpiece, not as a special case full of esoteric secrets, but as inventive and exciting music brilliantly laid out in an intelligible five-movement form. Taken boldly and played with steady energy, Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra make the piece hold together quite solidly, and the progression from the brooding opening through the nocturnal middle movements to the exuberant finale makes sense in symphonic terms. Recorded with crystal-clear DSD sound and presented in the super audio format, the recording is vividly detailed and surprisingly clean for being live, and the sonorities of the orchestra are absolutely true. Along with Gergiev’s spectacular performance of the Symphony No. 6, this SACD is highly recommended as one of the best releases of 2008.

Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra celebrate Mussorgsky with the release of two of his most cherished works, ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ and ‘Night on a Bare Mountain’ (performed here in Mussorgsky’s original version). Gergiev is at his finest conducting these paragons of Mussorgsky’s work, featured alongside which are the seldom heard ‘Songs and Dances of Death’, composed during the years 1875 to 1877 and left languishing unpublished during the composer’s lifetime. One of Mussorgsky’s most powerful compositions, each song deals with death in a poetic manner reflecting experiences not uncommon in 19th century Russia: child death, death in youth, drunken misadventure and war.

Gustav Mahler and the Munich Philharmonic share a very special connection. As a composer he sustainably linked the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. The world premiere of his Symphony No. 4 took place under his baton on 25 November 1901 in Munich’s Großen Kaim-Saal with the then called Kaim-Orchester, present day Munich Philharmonic. His works have been a substantial part of the Munich Philharmonic’s core repertoire ever since and the orchestra has excelled on many occasions. After the MPHIL release of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in September 2016 now follows the release of the Symphony No. 4 with which the orchestra’s history is so closely intertwined. The live concert recording released on this album took place at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich, the orchestra’s home, with Salzburg soprano Genia Kuehmeier. Valery Gergiev has paid the Austro-German repertoire particular attention throughout his career, which ignited a lasting fascination for Gustav Mahler. Over recent decades he has continued to explore the Austro-German repertoire, garnering adulation, especially for his interpretations of Wagner, Strauss, Mahler and Bruckner – music that is at the very heart of the Munich Philharmonic’s repertoire.

The Munich Philharmonic has arguably given more performances of Anton Bruckner’s music than any other orchestra. A great number of Bruckner recordings lead by the many legendary conductors that have worked for and with the Munich Philharmonic are stored in the historical archive of the MPHIL Label including magnificent pieces with Sergiu Celibidache, Christian Thielemann, Rudolf Kempe, Günter Wand and Oswald Kabasta. Having started this past September 2017, in the Monastery of St. Florian fascinating a setting with unique historical significance in this context, the Munich Philharmonic and Valery Gergiev present the most spectacular and ambitious cycle of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies. All performances take place in the Monastery of St. Florian in Linz, a venue inextricably linked to the composer and his final resting place. The cycle will continue in September 2018 and completed in September 2019. All symphony recordings will be made available on the orchestra’s very own label MPHIL by 2020/2021. Valery Gergiev on the experience of making these recordings: “The Munich Philharmonic are incredible, talented players. They combine this technical ability with a deep group experience in the music of Bruckner. I treasure and am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with these musicians and want people around the world to hear the music we make together.” The Munich Philharmonic proudly commence their St. Florian Live Recordings Series with the release of his First Symphony, recorded this past September 2017. Although traditionally labelled his first contribution to the genre, Bruckner’s First Symphony was not his first attempt to explore the world of symphony. It was written in only four months, and while clearly influenced by such models as Schubert, Spohr and Weber, it can still be regarded as a independent creation. A number of the characteristic features of the quintessential Bruckner symphony are already fully formed in the First: the tendency to build to a climax throuch a series of wave-like episodes, resulting in what might almost be described as outbursts of violence on the part of the full orchestra; soaring melodic lines in the slow movement; and a Scherzo notable for its motoric rhythms and lyrical Trio. The second release in this series is Anton Bruckner’s Third Symphony, also recorded this past September 2017. When looking at the original score, a single strip of blue paper features the handwriting of both Anton Bruckner and Richard Wagner. At the top, in Bruckner’s somewhat ungainly scrawl, are the words “Symphony in D minor, where the trumpet launches the main theme. A. Bruckner”, while benath it, in Wagner’s elegantly sweeping script, we read: “Yes! Yes! Cordial greetings! Richard Wagner!” This remarkable double autograph documents the successful conclusion of Bruckner’s attempfs to persuade Wagner to accept the dedication of one of his symphonies, which turned the Third into Bruckner’s “Wagner Symphony”. Valery Gergiev has paid the Austro-German repertoire particular attention throughout his career, which ignited a lasting fascination for Anton Bruckner. Over recent decades he has continued to explore the Austro-German repertoire, garnering adulation, especially for his interpretations of Wagner, Strauss, Mahler and Bruckner – music that is at the very heart of the Munich Philharmonic’s repertoire. This third season with Maestro Gergiev as principal conductor has continued a stimulating artistic relationship with the orchestra. This success is repeatedly confirmed and reinforced by the audience, international and German press.
