This show was the first of my mini-Italian tour, in Rovereto at an amazing venue called Smart Lab. The title comes from a conversation I had a few years ago with Pat Kane (singer with Hue And Cry, and amazing thinker) in which he introduced the whole notion of ‘the aesthetics of care’ – we were talking about what it means for the arts to be a caring profession, for us to make work that demonstrates care for our audience, that IS care for our audience.

Recorded on 21st Feb 2020 at Caffè Letterario Primo Piano, Brescia.

My first visit to Brescia in 13 years! The last time was the first improvised show that Lobelia and I ever did together, in a 600 year old church with a 10 second natural reverb. An extraordinary evening.

Truth is, every gig I’ve ever done in Brescia has been extraordinary… not because of my contribution (that’s probably for someone else to comment on who was there 😉 ) but because the level of care and attention given to putting on shows there has been incredible. The vast majority of that work has been shouldered by my friend Andrea Nones – a very fine electronic musician in his own right, but someone who has devoted a large chunk of his adult life to making niche music happen. It’s weird to think that the last time I was there was just 7 years into my solo career. I think I’d released maybe 4 solo records… 7 if you include the Lessons Learned… limited edition CDs/downloads. From this vantage point, it looks like still being the beginning phase of where I’ve been going.

It’s a tale of fandom, serendipity and procrastination. I was familiar with Mike’s playing from hearing him in Theo Travis’ Doubletalk band – he blew my mind when I saw the band play at The Pizza Express Jazz Club in London, and I was eager to hear more of his playing.

Not long after this, another friend, Lee Pellington, who teaches on a music degree course in Leicester got in touch to ask if I wanted to go and record at the college, as part of a week of giving the students real projects to work on. Having seen the studios before, this sounded like a fun idea, but more than that, sounded like the chance to try something new out. There wasn’t much point in me recording solo in a studio as there are no live mics in my set-up, and I can record it very well in my own studio.

It sounds like the beginnings to a plot for a dystopian sci-fi novel… “imagine if the Arctic… CAUGHT FIRE!” – like, it’s so absurd that it would ever happen. But here we are, large parts of the arctic are ablaze and not for the first time. And what’s worse, scientists who know about this things reckon it could keep burning through the winter, with the peat remaining lit under the ice…

So how does this horror-show become music? Well, if you’ve been following this journey for any length of time, you’ll know that this isn’t the first time I’ve dived into big themes with instrumental music as my voice. Last year’s Beauty And Desolation was very much part 1 of where this particular theme is going, in that it explored the fact that what felt like a gorgeous hot summer was actually a portent of just how utterly screwed we are.

This was my third and final gig in Italy this February. Organised by my dear friend Kev Cooke, who went to great lengths to get me a gig even though it was Carnival weekend (a fact that will become significant later!). He worked connections with the Casa Della Musica to get me a gig, with the Bill Lee Band opening the show (Kev plays bass in the Bill Lee Band, who are really really great).

Anyway, the venue was beautiful, the people who ran it were immensely supportive and helpful, but I opted to use a mono monitor in front of me instead of my in-ears, and didn’t realise quite how badly summing my signal to mono messed with the balance of everything – so out front it sounded just great, but for me it was all off.

Then one of the weirdest things that’s ever happened at a gig of mine occured – about 40 minutes in, just as I’d finished the third piece, over half the audience got up and left. About three people said goodbye. A proper mass exodus.
