Nitin Sawhney Ivor Novello lifetime award winning writer, composer and producer returns with his most commercial album to date Identity packed full of collaborations with his favourite artists.

“Identity as a subject of discourse or debate on social media and mainstream media has become increasingly distorted so that it’s very much about a kind of pejorative judgment … of people’s identity … quite often on the basis of prejudice rather than understanding,” Sawhney told Reuters.

“So I thought it would be great to actually make an album that’s a celebration of identity effectively and it’s really … inviting a lot of people that I respect and admire as artists to participate in a collective, kind of, speaking out about how they feel about their own identities.”

“Immigrants”, the new album (and official sequel to seminal 1999 Mercury Prize nominated ‘Beyond Skin’) from the multi award winning producer/songwriter/DJ/instrumentalist/composer/cultural pioneer Nitin Sawhney.

Sawhney’s new album, his first in 5 years, Immigrants is a unique celebration of immigrants around the world, showcasing works inspired and contributed to by artists who either identify themselves as immigrants, are from immigrant heritage or wish to express support for those international immigrants who have found themselves judged or disadvantaged by pure accident of birth.

“In this current, politically charged climate of xenophobia, fear and prejudice towards immigrants, I really wanted to make some music that celebrated the history and journey of those who came to the UK, not only for a better life, but to contribute the influences of their own diverse, rich heritage to the fabric of society and contemporary culture. The album has manifested as a collection of songs and music that express the collective catharsis of all those who participated and to all of whom I am truly grateful”, said Sawhney.
