La Compagnia del Madrigale releases another imaginative album on Glossa, turning to a late composition by Orazio Vecchi, Le veglie di Siena from 1604.

This entertainment comes in two parts: the first embracing pleasant mimicry of the manners of speaking of Italians and foreigners and a high-spirited madrigal group, La caccia d’Amore. Part two is more serious in tone, but with a kaleidoscope of musical styles and emotional expressions representing ‘umori’ or moods.

A vivid sense of theatricality from the vocal sextet is complemented by a modern master of the commedia dell arte, the actor and director Antonio Fava. Nuances, attention to words, compelling humour and ribaldry were all revelled in by Italian patrician society of the time and Vecchi was held in high esteem, including by contemporary composers, achieving a fame which was cut short by his death at 54. ‘Le veglie di Siena’ is generally regarded as Vecchi’s spiritual testament.

Marco Bizzarini’s compelling essay places this madrigal comedy in the contexts both of its time and of recent scholarship, whilst making plain the rumbustious fun there is to be had in the company of madrigalists as fine as can be heard on this new double-disc set.

With Il pianto della Madonna, a collection of spiritual compositions by Claudio Monteverdi, La Compagnia del Madrigale provide a stunning follow-up to their award-winning recording of the Fifth Book of madrigals by Luca Marenzio — both releases from Glossa. The singers of the ensemble have returned to their favoured Piedmontese recording location in Roletto to create a vivid sound picture of the desire in Monteverdi’s own time to bring the “heavenly harmony” of the composer’s secular works into the service of the religious domain (and that despite Post-Tridentine restrictions on such secular “intrusions”).

With ‘Vieni, dolce Imeneo’, La Compagnia del Madrigale make another important stop on their compelling journey across the territory of Italian secular song with a disc devoted to one of the most significant, yet these days somewhat bypassed, composers: Cipriano de Rore.

De Rore was a Fleming who enjoyed great success notably in the Italian courts of Ferrara and Parma – but with a prestige which extended up and across Europe.

He composed in many genres but it is the secular madrigal – recorded here – where his skill was most valued, for example in creating extended and expressive melodic lines coupled with innovatory preechoes of the seconda pratica so triumphantly expressed – albeit amidst great criticism – by Claudio Monteverdi.

With “Lagrime d’amante”, La Compagnia del Madrigale, so accomplished with 16th- and 17th century Italian music and words, turns its attention afresh to the music of Claudio Monteverdi. This new Glossa release, recorded in Cumiana, outside Turin, faithfully conveys the beauty of the ensemble’s vocal blend in a selection of five-part compositions drawn from the Monteverdi of Cremona, Mantua and Venice, but centring on that cornerstone of his art, the Sixth Book.
The act of singing whilst weeping – as Marco Bizzarini points out in his booklet essay – is somewhat unfeasible, but time after time Monteverdi strove to overcome that improbability by his music, often calling upon the best Italian poetry of the time: here, the fabulously vivid imagery of Torquato Tasso, Battista Guarini and Petrarch are well served by Monteverdi’s musical response.

The only surviving version of Carlo Gesualdo’s First Book of Madrigals was printed in Spring 1594 by the typographer Vincenzo Baldini. At the time, the composer was twenty-eight years old and had just left behind the murder of his wife, in 1590. In this first publication Gesualdo probably collected pieces composed earlier than 1591. The music is written by a young author, far away from the better-known experimental composer of later years, yet is clear and faultless, and often very effective.

With Carlo Gesualdos Third Book of madrigals La Compagnia del madrigal continue their dynamic new view of late Renaissance Italian repertoire, which has seen the vocal ensemble garlanded with critical praises and prizes since the time of its initial Glossa release- Gesualdos Sixth Book- three years ago. Although Gesualdos Third Book came out but one year after his first two books, it manifests a transitional style that led into the late style of the Fifth and Sixth Books. In the texts, joy and grief are frequently intermingled- yet each time freshly considered- and although there are named writers such as Battista Guarini present, many of the texts are anonymous; the interference being that Gesualdo himself might have been their author. In these exposed and unaccompanied madrigals, La Compagnia del Madrigale blends its trademark expertise and vocal freshness to take the listener on a fascinating sound journey. So as to provide a yet more nuanced view of the time of composition, the ensemble has added works by Scipione Stella, Luzzasco Luzzaschi and Alfonso Fontanelli.
