Though the works of Russian composer Rachmaninoff are often appreciated for their ardent passion and overflow of emotions, pianist Cho Jae-hyuck aims to examine a more reserved, thought-out side of the Romantic composer’s works with his latest recording of his piano concerto pieces.

In Korea, Cho recently released a studio-recording of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, and No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30, under the French music label Evidence. The international release is set for October.

In summer of 2019, Cho joined hands with the Russian National Orchestra and conductor Hans Graf for the recording at the then-newly opened Zaryadye Hall in Moscow, Russia. Legendary classical music producer Michael Fine, who won the 1992 Grammy award, produced the album.

Jae-Hyuck Cho plays Chopin’s extraordinary four Ballades and Sonata No. 3 in recordings that stand out for their nuance, passion and almost Lisztian virtuosity. Jae-Hyuck Cho is remarkable for pursuing a highly successful dual career as both pianist and organist, and he brings the sense of musical space and grandeur inherent in his organ playing to his piano performances. There is great subtlety and delicacy, too, in the Chopin interpretations heard on this album. Chopin pioneered the Ballade form, creating four distinct and deeply original works, from the ardent episodes of the first and dramatic contrasts of the second, to the warm, sunny Ballade No. 3 and poetic, lyrical No. 4.

The Sonata No. 3 epitomises the Romantic spirit and remains one of Chopin’s greatest achievements. Jae-Hyuck Cho performs these works with flair and originality, seeking to shed new light on celebrated repertoire.

The trumpet has had many concertos written for it by composers from the Soviet era and beyond. Appealing in its unabashed melodies and colourfully nostalgic feel, Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto became popular in the West, while Weinberg’s emotive Trumpet Concerto in B flat major was summed up by Shostakovich as a ‘symphony for trumpet and orchestra’. Shostakovich’s own playful Concerto No. 1, Op. 35 is recorded here with Timofei Dokschizer’s extended trumpet part, bringing it closer to the Baroque ‘double concerto’ model that the composer may initially have intended. The three works featured on this recording each has a connection with virtuoso trumpeter Timofei Dokshizer, who commissioned and premiered a succession of such pieces. A major attraction for this release is Paul Merkelo playing Shostakovich’s extremely popular Piano Concerto No. 1 (which also features acclaimed pianist Jae-Hyuck Cho) in a version with archival cadenzas and ornamentation by Timofei Dokschizer.
